The Resistance Report: The First Order Occupation

This episode, you guys! This. Episode! Forgive my giddy fangirling, but The First Order Occupation was a sheer delight, and if I didn’t fangirl a little, I’d probably explode. Don’t worry though, there will be some deeper thoughts in here as I dig into the heart and soul of this exciting-but-sweet chapter in the Resistance story.

Contains spoilers from The First Order Occupation and related events from this season thus far. Also some minor spoilers from Episode V and Rebels episode The Mystery Of Chopper Base.

With a title like “First Order Occupation”, I was expecting this episode to go in an entirely different direction. Perhaps something to do with Kaz’s role as a Resistance spy in a sea of growing hostilities and suspicions. And for the first chunk of the episode, it really felt like that’s where the story was going. But Kaz’s kind heart changes the course dramatically as he takes the focus off his own problems and risks everything to help Synara escape. I was expecting an exciting adventure no matter what this episode entailed, but it was this beautiful picture of love that made it so much more.

Yeah, I know… “love” is a rather strong word for an awkward spy boy and a conflicted pirate girl who doesn’t seem terribly impressed with the aforementioned awkward spy boy. But let’s remind ourselves that love is more than romance; it’s taking the focus off yourself and what you want, and thinking of and acting on what others want or need — whether friend, enemy, or someone you’ve never met. I don’t know about you, but Kaz risking his life and his Resistance career for Syn’s safety? That’s love. And then Synara giving up her newfound freedom to help him back? Also love.

Let me expand a bit on these kinds of love. Yes, it’s been quite obvious these last few chapters that Kaz has a schoolboy crush on Synara. I wouldn’t deny that it had some effect on his decision-making (I mean, Kaz did make it sound like she single-handedly fought that mama rokkna… a slight exaggeration, I do think), but I’d argue that he would have helped her regardless. His kindness has shone through in so many other ways throughout the series so far. And the very fact he was where he needed to be to rescue Synara in the first place, right back on Signal From Sector Six, is because of a love-rooted truth that he believed in: “When people are in need, we help“. Even when it meant fighting ill-tempered monkeys and a hulking ape-lizard, and even now when it meant saying goodbye, likely for good.

There’s a lot I wish we knew about Kaz and Synara’s friendship. Their initial relationship seemed a bit stilted, obviously since Syn wasn’t trying to make friends while undercover, and I’m sure also due to some of her suspicions about his identity. But by the time we get to The Doza Dilemma, while she still seemed unsure of how to respond to all the kindnesses she’d been shown by Kaz and his friends, it clearly meant the world to her — enough so that she absolutely couldn’t go through with a plan that would hurt a friend. I have little doubt that Kaz’s kindnesses in the past had an influence, even in some small way, on who she became. But regardless of what all happened in between, this last great kindness of Kaz’s seems to have deepened their bond, and it’s not just in that he put himself in danger to help her. I think Synara knew last episode that Kaz didn’t believe her claims, that she’d likely just lost his friendship. The fact he still decides to help her despite her deception, that he still could see the good in her, must have blown her away. It’s an act of forgiveness as well as kindness, and when you’re a pirate… I can’t imagine you get either very often. No wonder she couldn’t stand aside and let Kaz get caught, and no wonder that she seemed reluctant to leave Castilon in the end…

Her world had completely changed. All because of a young pilot who, in helping the Resistance, would ultimately be led to her distress signal.
Indeed, he helped her more than he realized.
More than she realized.

TWILIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTS
– I was a little surprised that the First Order got on Doza’s good side so quickly, but the FO certainly knows how to play their cards. I wonder how much time passed between last episode and now? By Neeku’s comment, it’s at least been a week. Again it fascinates me how fast this show’s moved and makes me wonder what’s gone on in between. Perhaps an opportunity for some comics, youth novels, and Lego shorts? 🙂
– “If ‘thrilled’ is code for ‘nauseated’, then yes, Neeku. I’m extremely thrilled.” XD Man, I wanna write like these guys!
– There is a lesson here in what Kaz is saying, guys. History is super important!
– Aw, Kaz just wants to help the poor guy! 3: Now would be a great time to have a spare com and a penchant for voice acting… oh wait that’s Ezra’s thing. Um, any chance you’ve got another gorg in that thermos? That could work…
– Nice save, Neeku! Though yikes dare I ask how he would’ve finished that sentence? “…and he has been following you all around nonstop since your arrival! He’s that big a fan!”
– You stormtroopers are looking for all the wrong droids! If anyone’s a spy on the platform, well… I’d bet my credits on Garma. Just look at her in the crowd back there, smiling at that guy like nothing about this present situation is concerning! And I can’t remember the episode now, but we’ve seen her steal a crate outright. Actually, maybe she’s working for the FO instead! Perhaps that’s the real reason she’s acted so nice to Kaz! Gotta keep an eye on her, folks.
– Whoa so this is what it looks like when Kaz gets worked up. Back up everybody! He’s on fire!
– THE STORMS ARE ON TO HIM! KAZ IS SO TOAST IT’S NOT EVEN FUNNY. Well, it’s kind of funny… mostly because his acting skills are so bad and Yeager knows it.
– OK so I just noticed that little janitor dude has robotic hands and a tiny hat. So coot!
– Conversational skills are on-point! 😛 Seriously though, I think Kaz got his metaphors mixed up a bit in there.
– Good job not drawing attention to yourself, spyboy-flyboy. That guy back there must think you’re nuts talking to a crate like that XP
– Is the “neekto” in “great-grand-neekto” a nikto word for “mother” or “father”, or someone’s actual name? Either one sounds possible.
– “To the turbolift!!” Well now I’m gonna have to whisperscream the same anytime I get on an elevator XD
– Heyy we finally get to hear StarWarsian elevator music! Perfect! It makes this moment even more hilarious!
– Of all the heartfelt “sensitive” goodbyes we’ve seen in Star Wars… this is the only one that had me get a little misty-eyed and laugh out loud. It may not’ve been a tearjerking “I love you/I know” or a tender “We’ll see each other again”, but Kaz’s kind heart still shines through — even when being bonked squarely on the head by an escape pod door. Good thing he still had that helmet!
– Aww look at Synara and the fish-birds! I think she’s secretly a Disney Princesses. If that ship hadn’t arrived so soon, she’d probably have sung an “I Want” song! Just watch and you’ll see, someday she’ll be part of this world!

The Resistance Report: The Doza Dilemma

So whoa you guys, The Doza Dilemma was a supremely-awesome episode and I’m so ready to get all my thoughts — both analytical and fangirly — out of my head and on-screen!

Contains spoilers from Resistance episode The Doza Dilemma and related events from the season thus far.

When Kragan chastised Synara for forgetting who her “real friends” are, I thought he was being a bit paranoid. After all, nothing had really convinced me so far that Synara wasn’t 99.9% committed to this spy job. Yeah, Tam saved her life once and Kaz brought her lunch that time (he technically also saved her life, though she probably doesn’t know it), but I doubted that would be enough to make them totally her new best friends. We soon find out, however, a lot has changed since she first arrived.

Walking into Aunt Z’s, Synara is bombarded with kindness, caring, and acceptance. Kaz genuinely wants to know if she’s doing all right. Tam’s quick to offer up a round of darts. Even Torra, who’s only just met Synara, is more than happy to invite her over along with Tam and Kaz. Watching the four of them together chatting and playing hologames, it’s impossible not to feel how much Synara wants this. To have real friends, to be part of a supportive community, to actually be trusted! It about broke my heart at the time, imagining what was bound to happen when everything came crashing down.

I kept thinking “Anytime now, Syn, you can just walk away! You don’t need Kragan or anyone on that nasty old crew! You don’t need to kidnap anyone or steal anything ever again! Just stay on Castilon and live your best life with your new besties!” But I know it’s more complicated than that. We don’t really know her backstory (or how much of what she’s said about it is true), but there’s something apparently keeping her tied to Kragan and her fellow pirates. Something that won’t let her just ditch them outright, even after the pirates’ job goes south and there doesn’t seem to be a need for her spy services anymore. My theory at the moment is that she was raised by pirates, maybe Kragan himself. If so, no wonder she’d be so torn. Or it may not be so much to do with family ties as it does with the bad things that happen when you doublecross pirates (or do anything that looks like a doublecross). Whatever the case, I hope Synara ultimately finds her way out. And that she’s able to hold on to these wonderful friendships she’s formed… somehow, some way.

TWILIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTS
– “Hey, Synara! We never see you anymore! Everything OK?” Has it really been that long? This show’s moving so fast! Also awwz Kaz you are just too sweet for this galaxy :3
– Synara’s use of “cycles” here sounds like another term for “hours”. Interesting.
– I just love that Torra’s become a part of their squad now! I still have questions as to why she decided to (mostly) trust Kaz again… perhaps Tam helped put her at ease. “Kaz? A spy? Ha! That’s a good one. He couldn’t spy to save his life!”
– Hehe I just noticed Buggles trying to play with the holo-drones! Too cute!
– 4:37 may be the most adorable Kaz face ever X3
– I was thinking Kaz would be better at this since he’s trained with simulated weapons and all, but… he’s doing exactly what I do whenever I play fast-paced shooting games, where I get frazzled in the heat of the moment and start blasting all over the place! I’d wondered if he was faking it to throw the others off his Resistance-spy trail, but TBH I think he’s just bad at it, period.
– This time “cycle” is used in place of “shift”. Still not very clear here.
– Oh I see Bucket’s been napping on the job again! Hehe BB-8 you little stinker 😛
– Hmm wonder what Neeku was up to while the others were hanging out? They must have different break times, because otherwise I can’t imagine him turning down fun times with friends!
– Not gonna lie, this episode’s made me a hardcore Kaznara shipper right now. I don’t know if it’ll last but AHH KAZ IS SUCH A SWEETHEART! Plus, you long-time readers know I love this kind of one-sided crushy stuff :3
– I know that apparently Valik is the same species as Aurra Sing, but I’m convinced she must have some zabrak genes with that horn-mohawk there. Unless getting horn implants in this galaxy is as common as ear piercings and tattoos.
– OK here’s a long-held SW query of mine: why is it that droids always seem take a second to stare at the droid popper (or other similar weapons) before they get zapped? Doesn’t matter whether it’s a dopey-but-endearing B1 or a hulking guard, the clankers apparently find random metal balls fascinating! So much so that they don’t consider they probably should get rid of the projectile and fast. Welp Doza doesn’t have ’em around for their logic processors (or their Clone Wars-less memory banks).
– THE LIGHTING IN THIS CHASE SCENE!! OHMYGOSH I’M IN LOVE!! It’s so Pirates Of The Caribbean!
– Hey there’s a nikto pirate back there! The skin on their faces must get a lot rougher as they get older. I initially thought Neeku’s smooth face was just a design choice, but there you go! Learn something new everyday!

The Resistance Report: Dangerous Business

Ready to dive into some more Resistance with me? I sure hope so, because whether you saw it the day it aired or you’re like me and just saw it a couple weeks ago, there’s always some fascinating factoids and engaging character arcs to explore! 😀

Contains spoilers from Resistance episode Dangerous Business (and some other events from the season thus far).

At first, I wasn’t sure where to begin with writing this post. It’s a very good episode, no doubt. A fun, fast-paced blend of humor and action that seems to be preparing us for uncertain times ahead. But beyond the nifty and nerdy things that I was sure to include in the Twilight’s Highlights section, what else would I write about? What would be this Report’s major focus? What was the big takeaway from this episode in the middle of all this chaos, comedy, and danger? Once I thought on that question, though, I soon had my answer. An answer that greatly improved my initial perspective on the episode.

At the very beginning, we find Kaz, our noble-but-not-mechanically-gifted young hero working on the Fireball. My first thought was “Wow, how far he’s has come! He hasn’t even blown anything up!”. But I’d soon find he’s come far in more ways than one. We don’t know for sure how long he’d been fixing it up, but considering he was up before anyone else, he very well could’ve spent all night on it. And all for Tam, who he knew had her heart set on that ship, and didn’t appreciate that he’d been flying it so much lately. It wasn’t part of his job or his real job, but he wanted to do it all the same (and let’s not forget that Kaz is no early bird! That he managed to fix it with only a single error on little-to-no sleep is pretty miraculous). If you think that’s impressive, then think about this: for Kaz to accomplish this gift, he had to go an extra mile further. He could’ve waited until eventually he had the money to buy those parts outright, but he clearly felt he needed to get it done ASAP so Tam could fly same-day like she was hoping for, and that meant getting a second job at Acquisitions — well, a third job, actually! And even though Flix and Orka haven’t exactly been the kindest to him, Kaz was willing to put in the work and treat them and their shop with respect. Though Flix and Orka don’t know all that Kaz actually accomplished in destroying the stolen phase connector, they’re right to take notice of his loyalty. Something these crusty moneygrubbing shopkeepers might could stand to learn.

And it gets better! Though Kaz continues to find himself in danger just about every time he turns around, there’s a difference in how he got in trouble this time. When Flix and Orka warned him about the back room, I immediately assumed Kaz was totally going to go in that back room and trouble would meet him there. After all, his decision-making skills are kind of… iffy some days (like helping “friends” steal a dangerous fuel additive and all those times he’s skipped work for non-Resistance reasons, just to name a couple). He ultimately got into trouble because he was trying to do the right thing and make the customer happy, like a good employee should do! (Plus it helped his spy work, win-win!) The only real mistake he made this episode was biting off more than he could chew. But his motives were ultimately pure (even if slightly tainted with that “I got this” brand of overconfidence). So when you really think about how much Kazuda Xiono has grown since we first met him, how generous and loyal he’s become, how much he cares about his friends and the people around him, it’s pretty astounding… and I can’t help but be warmed by it 🙂

TWILIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTS
– So was the Resistance unable to fix the Fireball last time back on Station Theta Black? Or is this a totally different “Kaz-tastrophe” that Tam’s referring to? From what it sounds like though, there have been multiple ones…
– Y’know I should’ve mentioned this episodes ago, but Kaz really rocks that black tunic/tee right there.
– How’d Flix rope Orka into that? Maybe their families were friends growing up? That or Flix had to do a lot of begging and/or bribing. Or else Flix’s mom makes a mean ugnaught bean casserole.
– Balarian pie! Sounds good… whatever “balarian” is. I’m imagining it at the moment to taste like Fig Newtons for some reason. More Star Wars food to attempt recreating!
– There’s still a Mining Guild in the galaxy? I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, but that’s rather intriguing to discover.
– Ohhh that’s why they keep Bitey around. He’s a guard-gorg!
– But everyone knows ball-droids are much more effective as guards! Git ‘im BB!
– This has just not been Kaz’s day. But this is kind of the norm for him.
– I legit just realized Kaz’s gloves have glowing buttons. How does that work? Does he have to charge them? But I think the question I really should be asking is why the gloves have glowing buttons in the first place…
– Star Wars is full of unlikely heroes. We can now add Bitey to the list!
– Hmm, is Orka implying that Flix’s kind is typically featherless?? And so opens up another unsolved SW mystery!
– Do days on Castilon work differently, because it’s still pretty light outside for it being evening.

A Totally Fangirly Analysis Of The Episode IX Teaser

In part due to a busy schedule (and being very very behind on Resistance), I haven’t been able to keep up with Star Wars Celebration the way I usually have. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t had Star Wars on my brain in a big way these past few days — especially since that IX teaser dropped!

Typically, normally because of time, I wait to write these analyses until the trailer/second teaser. But guys, this is the last chapter in the Skywalker Saga. I want to capture as many of my thoughts as possible as we rise up to meet the big finale! So let’s rewatch this thrilling taste of what’s to come together, and I’ll share my moment-by-moment first reactions and the deep thoughts that followed.

Contains some spoilers from Episode VII, Episode VIII, and some of the other films before it.

0:00 – Rey’s intense breathing is equal to my own every time I watch this. Granted, mine has more to do with a severe case of fangirlitis than whatever has her on-edge.
0:03 – A part of me is a little annoyed the logo came in and made me wait five whole seconds to find out what was going on XP But hey, Lucasfilm deserves to take the spotlight for a moment! Without Lucasfilm, we wouldn’t have Star Wars anything!
0:08 – Stiiiiill trying to catch my breath. But how could I possibly do that when this is a Star Wars teaser? Epicness is about to hit me like a bomb and the anticipation is killing me!!
0:10 – YAY IT’S REY!
0:13 – What could she be facing down?
0:16 – I think it’s really fascinating that Rey’s outfit has gone from tan to gray to white. It’s very different than Anakin in the Prequels (who went from tan to reddish-brown to black) and Luke in the Originals (who went from white to tan to black). There some sort of symbolism here? Not that I could ever imagine Rey really wearing black, though.
0:18 – Oh so dramatic!! BUT WHAT ARE YOU FACING DOWN, GIRL?!
0:21 – OMG LUKE! Who is “we” though? Has Rey been having conversations with the other Force Ghosts? Is Luke himself a Force Ghost now? I’d like to think this narration is some sort of proof, but… you know how these trailers are at including great dialogue that doesn’t make it into the final film. Have to wait and see. But I kinda really’d like to see Yoda and Rey having a chat 🙂
0:24 – Whatever she is facing requires a lightsaber… (I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t recognize the hilt at first)
0:25 – What a shot, wow! Also wondering a bit where this desert is? Are we back on Jakku like Luke came back to Tatooine? Or could it be Tatooine? Or some place entirely different? Those mountains seem new, though — something neither desert world had…
0:27 – Again more beautifully intriguing dialogue from Luke. Maybe this has something to do with her reading all those Jedi texts. That would make sense why there’s a “we”.
0:29 – I KNOW THAT SOUND. THERE’S A TIE COMING.
0:31 – Weirdly enough, just one TIE. From my experience, they usually come in packs.
0:33 – OK soooo what’s the plan, Rey? How does one lightsaber stack up against one TIE? I feel like I’ve seen something similar in Rebels but I really can’t remember.
0:34 – That right there is the face of determination!
0:37 – “Every generation has a legend.” I love how this quote calls back to mind Episode I’s tagline, “Every saga has a beginning”. It might not’ve been intentional, but to me, it helps bookend the entire Skywalker story.
0:43 – Again, wishing I could figure out where this is. I am no expert on sand, sad to say.
0:46 – But that ridge does look a bit Tatooine-ish. It would be fitting to end the Saga on the world part of the story began on — that hot, dusty, irritating old sandpit that has witnessed some surprising moments of heroism over the decades.
0:51 – That TIE sounds like it’s coming up fast! ‘Course, I’ve never heard a TIE that didn’t sound fast.
0:53 – Yep that is fast. So fast I haven’t been able to figure if that’s Ren’s Bat-TIE Silencer or something else.
0:54 – THE BLUE BLADE LIVES!! After it was assumptively destroyed, I figured she’d do like other Jedi before her and get a new lightsaber next time around. And just like Luke and others, the new ‘saber would be a symbol of growth in skill and in the Force. But I like the idea that, instead, the mended Skywalker blade could be a symbol of her gaining a newfound strength, rising above the hurt in her past and the mistakes she’s made. #Inspiring
0:56 – Same lightsaber, but definitely some new skillz.
0:57 – Ren’s gloves, I presume. Pardon me for asking, Kylo, but don’t you have anything better to do right now than fly your TIE at people? I mean… who took over for Snoke? Surely you wouldn’t trust just anyone to lead the First Order, right…? I’ve been wondering that one for a while.
0:59 – Hold up I thought that TIE was coming toward her– oh wait now I remember she turned around.
1:00 – Seriously what’s the plan here Rey??
1:03 – Whatever it is, I know it’s gonna be cool.
1:05 – Hmm I think that’s the Silencer now. Not that I’m an expert or anything.
1:07WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Just when you think you’ve seen all the epic things the light-aligned can do…! Though I just realized we still don’t know what her plan was. Is Rey going to ride the TIE and lightsaber its panels off? Or something even epic-er?
1:09 – It always feels like it takes forever, but Christmastime and Star Wars go together wonderfully!
1:11 – These mountains call to mind Solo a bit… nuts, I can’t remember the world’s name.
1:14 – If it is the same place, it seems a bit more populated.
1:16 – Kylo Ren seems to enjoy happy jaunts in the woods with his lightsaber, doesn’t he? 😛 Sorry that wasn’t nice (to Kylo or the guy he stabbed).
1:17 – Is that red sky just a result of sunset, or is it always a red sky? Either way, very cool.
1:18 – Interesting… while Rey has repaired her lightsaber, Ren is repairing his mask. Why does he decide now to wear it again? And how did he find all the pieces??
1:19 – Hey check out the bros’ cool adventure duds! Oh, and hmm is that Rey’s old staff Finn is holding?
1:21 – BB!!! I know I see you all the time in Resistance now, but I’m excited to see you here all the same! And his new little buddy D-O, too!
1:23 – YAS LANDOOOO!!!! And he’s wearing something akin to one of his Solo outfits! Oh I’m still so happy he’s back for this one!
1:24 – I know I questioned eariler if Poe might end up flying the Falcon for a bit, but I don’t think Lando would let him now XP
1:26 – All the bittersweet feels. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be crying when the credits start rolling.
1:28 – Looks like some kind of battle going on. With some kind of speederbike! Hehe I love speederbikes!
1:30 – THREEPIO!! Oh my gracious I didn’t even remember he was there! (Yes I’m weird and only watched the teaser one time the day it came out. But hey I wanted my thoughts on the blog to be fresh!) I have a feeling he and Poe won’t get along very well (same for Finn), but it’ll be delightful to watch!
1:32 – Whoa I didn’t even catch what was about to crash there! Hope it’s nobody I know…
1:33 – One of the medals of Yavin! Another great thing I somehow didn’t fully comprehend in my first viewing. Thank you StarWars.com for reminding me.
1:34 – Oh this shot is so precious. And again, it wasn’t until afterward that I remembered “Right… Carrie isn’t with us anymore. How. did. they. DO. that??” and my mind got so blown.
1:36 – THE FEELS!
1:38 – I so love this shot. Ever since the end of VIII, I’ve loved that it feels like Rey has found home in her friends in the Resistance, both new and old. I’m glad, as we’ve learned, that there’s a bigger time gap between VIII and IX, because that means we’ll get to see how much these great friendships have strengthened since then, and how they’ve shaped Rey into the more confident and fearless individual she is today. Again, all the feels!!
1:39 – My first reaction was, of course, a continued sense of awe and mystery. But it was thanks to my brother’s observations that I finally took notice that those ruins look awfully Death Star-like… which might explain what happens next.
1:43 – “No one’s every really gone.” is such a beautiful line! Or again, so it seems…
1:46 – My exact reaction: my jaw dropped, somewhere in between a gasp and a smile, and I slammed my hands down on the desk and remarked “OH MY GOODNESS, WHAT?!” I don’t know if I’ve ever felt such a wild mixture of shock, horror, and pure joy! I don’t know what it all means, whether he’s survived those Death Star ruins all these years, or if he’s gained some form of Sith immortality or what, but I am so looking forward to seeing what Sidious is up to. I’m sorry for the Resistance’s sake, but… there are just some villains who, despite they are so vile and so detestable, you love them anyway, and you greet them with open arms! Yeah that may have been the best villain reveal ever. Period. In all of film trailer history.
1:56 – And whoa such a cool title! It leaves me with endless questions, though. Who’s the Skywalker we’re talking about? Luke, because he’s “risen” to a place of immortality? Kylo, because he is part Skywalker? Rey, because she actually is a Skywalker somehow, like the granddaughter of Shmi’s second cousin like I theorized?? I do not know but, OH WOW THIS WAS WORTH WAITING FOR!

So yep I’m still not over it, are you? Not sure I ever will be! You guys, it is good being a Star Wars fan! Anyway, I’ll keep working on the Resistance posts from here, and hopefully whatever else exciting comes next in the SW galaxy!

Keep the peace,

The Resistance Report: Secrets And Holograms

You all ready for another Resistance Report? I sure am! Especially since today I’ll be writing on the pure delight known as Secrets And Holograms! Onward!

Contains spoilers from Episode II, Episode IV, and the Resistance episode Secrets And Holograms (along with other events in the series thus far).

In Star Wars, friendships are, more often than not, made by the times. They’re forged in the midst of battle, when you may not have anything in common with the person fighting with you, but the very fact they are fighting with you, likely fighting for the same things you believe in, makes them go from simply an ally to a real friend. Even if not in a literal battle, the influence of war and politics, in ways both big and small, often finds its way in helping forge friendships. I’d wager you could look at every relationship of every kind in Star Wars and see these influences over and over again. I think that’s because there’s so much truth in it — no matter how dark the times, light always finds a way. The worst situations can ultimately create some of the greatest bonds! You may be wondering, though, how exactly this relates to this episode. Indeed, Kaz and Torra’s paths cross because of the times, because Kaz took the job of a Resistance spy, and perhaps possibly because Torra’s dad is up to something with the First Order. But what I love so very much about their friendship, is that it isn’t just made by the times — it’s also made by a shared love of hologames! You might think that’s silly to point out, but it’s one of those things that makes their bond so refreshing and so special. For much of this episode, they’re just two kids having a good time, and that is so important when you think about everything they have to deal with.

Kaz and Torra are working some pretty amazing jobs for their age. They’re pilots, defending the Republic and the Colossus, respectively. No part-time drive-thru work for them! They clearly enjoy their cockpit-bound careers, but can you imagine the sheer responsibility that work entails? And I’m sure the expectations of their politically-powerful papas don’t help. Kaz and Torra so needed to just be kids for a minute. And they both needed a friend they could “just be kids” with. So what a wonderfully unexpected moment it was when Kaz suddenly threw his spywork aside and started nerding out over Flight Simulator Squadron with Torra! It fills me with such joy to watch them laugh and goof off together, as though they were normal teenagers without a care in the galaxy! And it definitely made me happy to see Kaz so happy. He’s been up to his ears in peril lately (and that peril will resume shortly), so giving him a moment to have a good time was well-deserved.

Anyway, yes, I spent a lot of time this episode smiling widely and whisperscreaming things like “AHH THEY’RE SO GREAT!!” (and for more than just the fact I could see them making a lovely couple down the road) Kaz and Torra really do have a special, genuine friendship!
Or… so I thought. And that’s what made the ending so surprising. But I think that was the point. Once a thread of distrust rears its ugly head, it’s hard to say if we can still call it a friendship, let alone a special, genuine one. Friends are often made by the times, but sometimes the times end up making friendship difficult. Here’s hoping Kaz and Torra find their way back someday.

TWILIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTS
– Whoa seeing in-universe video games is so cool and fun! Did get me wondering, though… these stories cover a huge span of history, so how do the writers, designers, and Story Group folks and all decide on how to advance technology or not? How do they make sure it still feels like Star Wars, but also make it feel like a significant amount of time has passed? How do they know when something’s too modern-feeling? Had I been writing, I personally would’ve been wary to put video games in SW, but now that I see it here, it works just fine. Of course, thirty-something years past we had holographic chess, so maybe hologames shouldn’t surprise me so much.
– Look! Torra has even more plushehs!! I don’t even know what all these species are right off-hand, but awwz!! Not sure I’ve ever felt so kin to a SW character!
– OMG THAT PLUSHEH IS REAL!! IT’S A CAT-CHICKEN-OWL-BUG-PUPPY! So weirdly precious! :3
– Once again, we’re getting some familiar real-life scenarios with a Star Wars spin, and I love it!
– Soooo you clearly don’t trust the FO, don’t want your daughter hanging out around the FO, but HERE YOU ARE, INVITING THE FO!
– I think I’m gonna have to call 4D “MomDroid” from now on. She’s so professional — at least until she’s talking to Torra or doing anything with Buggles. Then she sounds like the weariest soccer mom there ever was. “Oh Buggles. Why.” XD
– Forgive me for pointing this out, but Kaz and Torra ran into each other through the shipping-and-receiving door. Coincidence? Or just Lucasfilm poking at us because they knew the Kazorra shipping among us was inevitable?
– Torra collects rocks, too? Lucasfilm, have you been looking around my deviantART and personal tumblr, taking notes on my favorite things?? Because the similarities here are kind of blowing my mind.
– Riiiiiight, ’cause Kaz is totally more interested in spying than in playing hologames XD
– I’m thinking Kaz here is not used to eating on the budget he’s living off of right now. Or it just may be this fancier lounge really does have good eats!
– Oh hello Jace Rucklin. This just got interestinggg. But hey, you could be working in worse places! You’re in the Tower!
– Somehow I’m not surprised that Doza’s finally making the deal. Perhaps he’s as protective with his people as he his with his spitfire daughter.
– What? You, Kaz, a rich kid yourself, don’t have access to expensive hologames? Maybe his New Republic job wouldn’t allow for it. And maybe his straight-laced senatorial parents wouldn’t let him “waste his time gaming”…
– “You can never be too sure with a ball-droid…” Sheesh, what’d the ball-droids ever do to you, MomDroid?
– LE GASP! An Imperial uniform? (I’ll discuss this more next Report)
– The “third day of the second cycle”? I wish I knew how that compared to earth-time. I’m fascinated by stuff like this. A cycle’s a month, right? I need some answers.
– Man I never expected Resistance-era incinerators would be so violent! This is so satisfying for my SW fangirl self tho. I’m getting serious Episode IV and II vibes!
– Also seriously how did Kaz manage to get so much time off today…?

Keep the peace,
– Twilight
