The Celebration Orlando 2017 Post!

First of all, I apologize for not having finished my SWR season recap post this past week like I said I would. Stuff came up. But right now, the biggest, most important thing to talk about is CELEBRATION! A time of year I look forward to as much as Christmas and my own birthday! There’s so much awesome stuff to talk about, so I’ll update this with every exciting panel I see so I can share my fangirling with all of you!
NOTE: There will be spoilers depending on the panel I’m discussing.

40 YEARS OF STAR WARS
They kicked this thing off with a bang that would rival the destruction of the two Death Stars and Starkiller base combined! Every time I turned around they brought out a guest worth screaming about! To see the master himself, George Lucas, there… oh my gosh I screamed so loud. And then followed that up each time afterward. This was a hugely special panel for so many reasons. One for me was that, I honestly haven’t watched many of the bonus features (don’t always have the time sigh), and I hadn’t seen a number of the actors and filmmakers interviewed before this. It was a marvelous first time! I’m not gonna lie I cried a lot too. That opening video hit me like a boulder-dozer of feels! And oh that dedication to Carrie Fisher… and then the awe-inspiring surprise John Williams performance! Every minute was precious and stunning and wonderful I absolutely can’t! I can only imagine where Celebration goes from here!

Assorted Fangirl Musings
– Ian McDiarmid always looks so young to me. He’s just amazing.
– Hayden Christiansen still is so much Anakin it’s incredible. I’ve missed seeing his face around here something awful!
– On that note, I was so glad to hear briefly from Qui-Gon and Mace! Er… Liam Neeson and Samuel L. Jackson, I mean. To know they still remember and value their time spent in the films and appreciate the fans is utterly heart-warming.
– Also, something about the image of a darksider Jar Jar Binks is actually really epic.
– Hearing the stories of how George and the original cast met was an absolute treat in every way possible.
– Mark Hamill’s original audition video is incredible. HIS ACTING, YOU GUYS. IT’S SUBLIME. EVEN WAY BACK WHEN ON AN AUDITION TAPE.
– Somehow I’d forgotten how tall Peter Mayhew was and now I doubt I’ll ever forget.
– I adore Anthony Daniels. I know that’s a no-brainer but, again, seeing these actors outside of the films and hearing them tell their stories of making them… it’s… words can barely describe.
– Also first time seeing Billy Dee Williams interviewed I think ever. He’s still the smoothest! 😀
– When the Harrison Ford showed up… I think everything in me exploded. I had no idea he’d never been to a Celebration prior, so that made it all the more special.
– His seamless Indiana Jones drop cracked me up. HE IS SUCH A DELIGHT OMG!
– Safe to say Carrie’s daughter has one of the best dresses ever. Her speech was beautiful.
– Like I said before, the dedication video was so moving and so special… when they started showing all the little girls in Leia costumes I think I really started weeping. In a good way though.
– And again, a standing ovation almost doesn’t seem good enough for John Williams. If I could fly or hover and applaud, I would. Same for the spectacular work done by the orchestra! Like wow! Made me want to go and buy all the soundtracks I haven’t yet bought right now.
– I clapped ’til my hands were numb, man. But that’s normal 🙂

SIDESTORY: FORCES OF DESTINY ANNOUNCEMENT
Just read the article on the new Forces Of Destiny microseries and product line and I’m excited. New animated shorts starring the bossladies of the Star Wars galaxy! How great is that?! I love the character designs and style, and since they’re all canon, it’s useless to resist! It’s really nice seeing them trying a line specifically aimed at girls. Star Wars has never been short on awesome female characters, and certainly never short on female fans (such as myself), and it’s not that it was a need, by any means (I’m always going to be mainly a 3.75 collector myself), but just imagine how many young girls might be further drawn into the saga on part of these new stories and merch? These princesses, Jedi, and rebels are about to draw in a whole new generation to the fangirl side of the Force, and that’s something to get excited about! 😀

DAVE FILONI: ANIMATED ORIGINS AND UNEXPECTED FATES
You know me, I could never turn down an opportunity to hang with Dave and Pablo! I absolutely loved digging into the origins of so many great characters and stories that we’ve seen told this last near-decade. I’m gonna be honest I was only able to watch this via livestream and was disgusted I couldn’t see the beautiful art and storyreel footage. But even so, it was nothing short of a fantastic panel with two of my favorite filmmakers. Bro I could listen to their stories for days. And naturally, this all got me really hyped for what we’re going to see Saturday…

Assorted Fangirl Musings
– Those Clones and Rebel cosplayers that came up early on? They were astounding. The Hondo was so perfect it was like he was real. The young Rex and S3 Ezra were perfect too. Like wow man. Much applause.
– I love that Ahsoka was almost Ashla! Who’da thunk? Just a neat little connection.
– I’m ecstatic to hear Wolffe and Gregor might be back! Also the Nine Old Men thing warmed my little heart. I would’ve loved to have seen that :3
– These stories are literally so amazing. We almost had Savage and Satine in Rebels! I understand why they didn’t go that route ultimately, but wow what an image! I’ll never watch the opening of Twin Suns again without seeing that in my mind’s eye.
– I about cried at my inability to see the images everyone was fanboying/fangirling over tho…
– Hehe everyone going Kanera-crazy cracked me up. But also yeah that sounds like an utterly beautiful scene. The idea Kanan, Hera, and Zeb were all processing the kids growing up and leaving home… such family feels!
– Though I couldn’t see the Bane-Boba showdown, it sounded beyond epic. Corey Burton and Daniel Logan are just incredible, and the whole prospect just made me ravenous for more on their characters’ stories.
– ALSOOO the fact that Durge almost made it into TCW is epic. I almost forgot to mention that.

IAN MCDIARMID: TALES FROM THE DARK SIDE
So Mr. McDiarmid was wonderful, that’s an understatement. Again, I haven’t seen a lot of interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff with him, so everything about this was a fantastic new experience. Definitely gained a lot lot more respect for the Senator/Chancellor/Emperor/Darth and Ian’s stellar acting skills. Watching the scene between Anakin and Palpatine at the opera (or as I nicknamed it, the fish ballet) again left me kind of breathless at the perfection of his performance (and Hayden’s too!). Also have to say I love listening to Ian not only because of the fascinating stories he was telling, but also because his voice is amazing. So smooth and so well-spoken and articulate! Which is why it was spectacular and spine-chilling to hear him do that Emperor laugh! An absolute blast of a panel all around! It’s tempting to drop everything right now and watch Episode III again, but the day’s not over…!

RAY PARK: PREPARE TO BE MAULED
Once again, Ray Park proves to be one of the greatest human beings to ever live. His stunts and sweet moves never fail to leave me in awe, and he’s every bit as much a nice guy as Maul is a bad guy 😀 He and Warwick made this panel nothing short of an absolute blast. I loved hearing his stories from working on set (and making lightsaber noises with Mr. Neeson and Mr. McGregor!), watching him performing stunts like an absolute blazing tornado of energy, teaching lightsaber techniques to the fans… oh and I smiled so hard when he mentioned he was a huge Toy Story fan! He’s seriously just so so great. After seeing him at last year’s Celebration I’ve learned his panels are ones you should never miss.

THE LAST JEDI
OMG THIS PANEL WAS EVERYTHING AND MORE. Josh Gad was a brilliant host, Rian Johnson clearly’s a brilliant director, and there’s so so much to get hyped about! And that TEASER! It left me reeling in the best way. It’s a long way to Alderaan, and by “Alderaan” I mean December, but this helped just the slightest bit with the wait 🙂 Allow me to elaborate further in my assorted fangirl musings:

Assorted Fangirl Musings
– Josh Gad is just like us and I love that.
– Like say, so much love for Mr. Johnson, and Ms. Kennedy too!
– OK so y’know I didn’t get to see The Force Awakens panel two years ago, so this is some of the first BTS stuff I’ve seen with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. And now I love them more than ever, and I didn’t think it was possible for me to love them more!
– I’m amazed Daisy could keep a straight face with Josh asking her questions like that. Nahhh Rey’s parents are probably just an average Joe and Jane, right…? XP
– John is promising more Finn and Poe adventures! Sounds good to me! *Imagines Finn and Poe in “The Boys Are Back” number in High School Musical 3* XD
– BB-8 IS HERE AND HE’S REAL! OK I already knew that they’ve got a functioning BB out there, but just seeing him here… it’s incredible. I’m amazed he was not utterly mobbed by hugging fans! I loved watching him get snippy with Josh. That was just perfect!
– Kelly Marie Tran is just a delight you guys. I absolutely can’t wait to meet Rose now!
– MARK HAMILL AGAIN! He’s still so fantastic and his stories are some of the best ever. Hearing him talk about visiting kids in hospitals and making a difference for them made me tear up.
– WOW THAT POSTER! It’s so dynamic and kind of retro and full of fantastic symbolism! I could look at it forever.
– AND THE TEASER. “Breathe… just breathe” NO I CAN’T BREATHE, LUKE!! THIS IS TOO AMAZING!!
– I won’t elaborate on it too long (I’ll save that analyzing for the next trailer), but a few pressing things on my mind…
– A) Luke and Rey seem to be all #MasterAndApprenticeGoals even if Daisy hinted her first meeting with Master Skywalker will be a little… different…
– B) Meanwhile, Poe and BB-8 are all #FriendshipGoals
– C) EVERYTHANG IS SO BEAUTIFUL OMGOODNESSGRACIOUS!
– D) Huh I thought Kylo lost that lightsaber in the fight on Starkiller Base. Did he have to build a new one (which must be hard since it’s a pretty ancient model) or did he just have an extra in his sock drawer?
– E) Biggest thing of all: “It’s time for the Jedi… to end…” WHAT.
– WAHT.
– WHAT DOES IT MEAN….?!
– Is he talking about the Jedi as a group needing to end, so they can be something different, something more? Or is he just kinda blue and done with the Force right now? I’m going with the first option for now, but you can bet this line will consume me from the inside out until one December weekend…
AHHHHHH I LOVE STAR WARS SO MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

HEROINES OF STAR WARS
So having Ahsoka, Sabine, and Rey in the same room was amazing, and with Dave, too! They kicked off the panel with the best video montage of the many many bossladies in the Star Wars galaxy and made me cry a little just with that. It was really cool just hearing their stories as well as their perspective on the depiction of strong female characters. I could honestly go on a while on the topic myself, but for now I’ll just say once again that I’m super pumped for Forces Of Destiny and for all the bossladyness that awaits us in the future of SW (like Rose!). Also two other notes: a) I seriously love the FoD Ahsoka doll and I might have to get that even though my main collecting focus is on the 3.75s. And then b) I cracked up at the original game plan for Out Of Darkness with Hera and Sabine talking about the boys XD Pff that would’ve been kinda terrible if we’d missed out on the emotional journey that episode centered around. Not that I’m adverse to future conversations tho… *COUGHKaneraCOUGHSabezraCOUGH* But yeah! Who runs the galaxy? Star Wars girls! They’re the reason I started throwing around the term “bosslady”! 🙂

MARK HAMILL’S TRIBUTE TO CARRIE FISHER
I’m not sure I can say anything that hasn’t already been said… it was equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming. Mark is so so good, so articulate, and poured out his heart so well on this. Like say, prior to this, I haven’t taken the time to watch the featurettes and interviews that would help me know the amazing people behind these characters more, and the time spent listening to Mr. Hamill, Mr. Davis, and old interview pieces from Carrie… they were really something special. I’d always sort of known that Carrie was a firecracker, but I had no idea just how much until now. You know, as I write this, I was listening to my TCW soundtrack and the track I ended up on right now was #11, “Death Of A Master”. It obviously wasn’t written for her, but this gripping, powerful piece of music really suits my emotional state. And she was a master, you know? Not of the Force, but of brilliant acting and a stellar sense of humor. She’s a princess, a senator, a general, and also an absolute master. That’s all I got man the feels are really feelsy right now…

STAR WARS REBELS
OK WOW. I HAVE NO WORDS. WHICH IS REALLY BAD SINCE I’M WRITING A BLOG. I’M UTTERLY SOBBING AND CAN’T STOP APPLAUDING YOU GUYS.
It breaks my heart kinda to know this will be the last season, but I have complete confidence they’ll end it right. And whatever they have in store next will be fantastic. I didn’t need the trailer for proof, but it certainly was great to see regardless. Yeah this won’t make it hard for me to focus on that Season 3 recap post later! 😛 I adored seeing all the cast and Filoni together again, and knowing we’re coming up on the end makes it all the more a precious moment. They’re a beautiful family… both the Ghost crew and the people behind them.

Assorted Fangirl Musings
– Dave talking about Obi-Wan and Maul gave me such feels again.
– Freddie Prinze Jr. utterly killed it in his thoughts on Kanan and Ezra. So brilliantly said!
– “Hot Kallus”?? That was a thing?! Pfff that cracked me up. He’s always been a pretty good-lookin’ dude! why’s the internet just noticing now? XD He’s looking even better than ever in the trailer, though, and I can’t wait to see him full-on Rebellin’! Also I hope we get an entire episode dedicated to watching Ezra, Zeb, and Kallus play video games like the bros they are jk.
– Also you guys how great is it that Warwick Davis is gonna be in this season?! The guy’s such a marvelous talent and a has a fantastic voice, I’m so so glad he’s getting in animated Star Wars already! And playing such a delightfully creepy character to boot!
– More Mandos yaaaaaas!
– Speaking of, that girl cosplaying as Ursa Wren was amazing. I mean… that episode came out only a few months ago! How did she do it??
– Also mad props to the Gregor cosplay, too. I love seeing people who don’t just want to don the armor suits, but become that character even without the helmet on 🙂
– Like say that trailer… on the second viewing I buried my hands in my face and wept. Vanessa Marshall’s narration… my gosh. It sets the stage so perfectly and just overwhelms me with emotions and nostalgia.
– Glad to know that we’re going to see the giant wolves I spotted in the artwork on An Inside Man.
– OK it’s so tempting right now to do a complete recap of the trailer but I don’t think I’ve got the right words to say yet. I will say a few words tho:
– A) WOW WE’RE BACK ON LOTHAL YES! I’ve been all giddy about seeing Yavin but so much of the action we’ve seen is on the world where it all began. NO I’M NOT CRYING YOU ARE.
– B) KANERA. THAT IS ALL. I GOT IT OUT OF MY SYSTEM. NO I HAVEN’T I’M CRYING HARDER NOW.
– C) Sorry I shouldn’t be writing every thought in all caps, but WAIT WAIT WAIT IS THAT BO-KATAN OR AM I COMPLETELY MISTAKEN?
– D) Final note I CAN’T WAIT FOR EVERYTHING OMG.

SMUGGLER’S REVENGE
This was definitely one of the most anticipated panels for me. I didn’t see (or hear, rather) the first one, but I adored the second one, so I was absolutely hyped to experience another one of Kyle Newman’s glorious Star Wars audio stories! The writing is stellar and so perfectly Star Wars, the acting beyond sublime, the sounds well-timed, and oh my gosh Han and Leia banter for days! It’s funny, I kept trying to close my eyes and just listen to the performance, but David Collins and Catherine Taber were so fun to watch as well as listen to! The acting is just so wow in all ways. Everyone just did so so incredibly. David is a perfect Han, and I had no idea Tom Kane was such a masterful C-3PO! I highly look forward to whatever Mr. Newman might be planning in the future! Final thought: MATTHEW WOOD’S WILLHEM SCREAM WAS THE BEST XD

Honestly you guys there are just too many amazing things to mention, it was just an incredibly bountifully joyful weekend of Star Wars. The fandom feels are running through me like electricity right now! It’s an absolute rush! I know I’ll be counting the days ’til next year 😀

Rebel Transmissions: Visions And Voices

OK so I’m super super excited to be writing this one today! Visions And Voices simply has so so much to talk about and think about and theorize on! So I’m thinkin’ I better get started…
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode I, TCW “Siege Of Mandalore” Arc (also virtually any episode pertaining to Maul and Dathomir), and Rebels episodes Spark Of Rebellion, Twilight Of The Apprentice, The Holocrons Of Fate, and Visions And Voices

Of all the days for a certain horn-headed darksider to make a reappearance. Ezra had finally gotten the chance to lead a mission for the mini-Alliance again, finally! And then… what starts as quiet whispers and faint glimpses turns to dark echoes and terrifying images, all of Maul. Um yeah that was the most gutwrenching opening I’ve seen in a while. How does Sam Witwer do it, getting his voice that… *shudders* …dark and cold? It’s no wonder Ezra’s out like a light. No one else saw or heard anything, so they’re not sure what to make of it. He tries to shake it off, but he’s not back out on the base for a minute before he starts pursuing Maul again — only to find he was actually about to strike a fellow soldier. It’s nothing short of horrifying, the entire experience. I do love, though, that throughout it all, the Ghost fam is totally there for him. I suppose it’s redundant to point out because I’ve pointed this out a lot, but I truly adore the fact they’re family first and Rebels second, and you see that in a very personal way as all of them, especially Kanan, Hera, and Sabine, are trying to help him during this strange development. Kanan has his suspicions as to why this is happening, but ultimately turns to the Bendu for answers. Apparently something went wrong during that little holocron-joining of theirs, particularly when Ezra cut the whole thing off. Bendu decides to let Maul explain the rest. WAIT WHUT. Kanan and Ezra turn around and yep there’s Maul, the real deal, in the half-flesh-half-machine! They turn back around and Bendu’s disappeared. Wow OK that was mind-blowing because I sort of thought he stayed in the same place all the time, using his branch-like form as a disguise. Well he is rather powerful so I suppose he can come and go how he chooses. But yep Maul is back again! Because of the abrupt end to their holo-Q&A, neither of them got a clear answer. So Maul decides now’d be a good time for him and his apprentice to exchange the last couple fragments of knowledge. Considering he’ll gladly reveal their base’s location otherwise, it looks like Ezra and Maul are gonna be hanging out again. Kanan does not approve. Good thing he gave Sabine Ezra’s com. Because yeah when Maul gets involved… things just don’t have a tendency to go well. Also on a random note can I just say I really love that Kanan doesn’t wear his mask as much in this episode? Not saying I don’t like the mask. His mask never hindered our ability to read his emotions, his voice and mouth expressions portray that wonderfully on their own. But for sure, seeing the eyebrows added a lot of expression there that worked amazingly well in this episode. It’s sort of a small thing, but I felt it was worth mentioning.
We soon arrive on dark creepy Dathomir. Somehow it’d never crossed my mind that Maul would consider this place home, but it really makes sense. It’s his birthplace, and it’s also where Mother Talzin restored him. Plus, he and Dathomir are kind of alike… red, dark, and broken. OMG you guys this episode stirred up so so many more questions about the zabraks and the Nightsisters and Nightbrothers and their world. The concepts they came up with in TCW have never ceased to be fascinating and cool and I honestly I’m thrilled they brought this branch of the mythology into SWR. Maul’s plan is to use some old magick to temporarily merge their minds and finally get the rest of the answers they were given. With the remains of the Nightsisters’ society still standing, it shouldn’t be any trouble far as the Old Master’s concerned. Also wow let’s just spend the rest of the post talking about Maul’s place. I could stare at all the details for hours, pondering and pondering what exactly he’s been doing all this time. What’s that writing on the wall supposed to be if not Aurebesh? Where in the galaxy did he get all those candles? And how’d he make it off Mandalore with all those souvenirs? Of course, that last question brings up a lot of questions, since I’m still in the dark about exactly what Maul was doing during his reign and what eventually got him off the throne. Certainly will need to do my research and read Son Of Dathomir to start with. It is personally very interesting to me that he kept the painting of Satine. I assume he values it because she represents his conquering of Mandalore and possibly his half-victory with Obi-Wan. Though I have to wonder if there’s something more to it that I’m not getting entirely. It’s still incredibly fascinating seeing these connections, though. Of course, truly, the all-around most interesting artifact might be that blade resting beneath the portrait. Yes we’ll definitely come back to that later because OMG THE DARKSABER!! Anyway, all this mind-merging’s gonna take is a quick potion-drinking. I seriously am amazed they could both do it with a straight face ’cause it looks nasty, but it certainly does its job, and they’ve got their questions fully answered at last. Ezra knows who he’s looking for and Maul knows where to look. Now, I was pretty certain at the time that it was Obi-Wan who Maul was giddy to find, but in the time between that episode and this one, I started to sort of doubt my hunch. After all, would he really be happy to see his worst enemy still lived? Probably it was someone else Maul had more respect for. But hehe I was quite proud to see my theory confirmed fact. Interesting that Maul refers to this location as just “a desert planet with twin suns”. He literally doesn’t remember its name? I know he’s a little old now but… eh probably it’s just that the name didn’t matter to him much at the time back in the day. Whatever the case probably good he doesn’t know its name, because once he figures it out, well… old Ben’s quiet life is about to get severely interrupted. Yeah of course Maul’d be happy! It’s not so much that his worst enemy’s alive, but that his worst enemy’s not dead yet… and therein lies his opportunity, his hope. Unfortunately though… that magick ain’t free, far as the NIGHTSISTER SPIRITS are concerned. And they don’t take cash or credit they take FLESH O.O It’s about then when Kanan and Sabine show up and quickly find out blasters don’t work on ghosts. Not that I blame them for trying or anything they be reallll scary. And watching those spirits up and possess Kanan and Sabine is completely spine-chilling. It’s fun when SW does stuff with these vastly different, dark angles of the Force, but it all gives me all kinds of shivers. I love it all, but… yikes, man. Though I imagine the Nightsisters didn’t use such weaponry during their lives, they sure know how to aim blasters and how to slash lightsabers, at least in the hands of their pawns. Maul and Ez are makin’ a break for it. The spirits can’t venture too far from the altar though, so that gives them a little time to figure out their next move. Well, the Old Master already had his next move figured out — with Kanan out of the way, Ezra can finally be his apprentice and they can go merrily on their way to Tatooine and do darksidery things! Ez is absolutely all kinds of “DUDE, NO.” on all accounts, so Maul gets on his ship and flies off. I don’t get the impression he’ll be giving up or anything though. You know how Maul is. Ezra figures all he has to do is get his comrades out of the cave and the possession problem will be solved. And then the Sister in Sabine decides to whip out THE DARKSABER. AHHHH MY GOSH SEEING IT BACK IN ACTION IS AMAZING. Seeing in the hands of a crazy ghost witch though… that’s pretty frightening. It’s still amazing, but… yeesh hearing that voice coming out of Sabine’s mouth… *shudders* that ain’t right. Ezra manages to Force-push Sabine out of the cave and releases the spirit, but he’s still got Kanan to free. And the Sister-spirit who took over his master is pretty darn stubborn. Ezra makes a deal with her, but y’know how these spirits are they’re gonna fight you anyway just ’cause. Finally the Nightsisters take him up on his offer… just as Ezra uses his lightsaber and the darksaber to destroy the altar. THE EPICNESS WOW. GO EZRA! WINNER WINNER NOONA DINNER!! I do sorta feel bad this entire civilization will likely never return, but then I remembered they’re dastardly darksider witches and suddenly I was slightly more OK with that. After all that excitement died down, Ezra finally had a chance to tell Kanan and Sabine what he found out — Obi-Wan Kenobi is the answer to their Sith problem. And they’re gonna make sure they find him before Maul does. I was confused for a couple seconds because I couldn’t remember how it was Ezra knew who Obi-Wan was, but once I was reminded of the message in the holocron, everything made sense. It’s fascinating that ultimately Maul and Ezra had the same answer to each of their desires, like say, I’d originally thought Ezra seeing Tatooine meant someone else, maybe more literally like Anakin or Luke, but this infinitely made more sense. Master Kenobi’s kind of made some major impact on the galaxy, y’know? Then I got all giddy because it fully sunk in that we’ll be getting to see Obi-Wan at some point this season and that is AMAZING. And then, before our three heroes left the darkness behind… Sabine decided to give the Darksaber a good home. Finally, the magnificent blade has found itself a rightful owner :3
Whew that was a lot of writing there! But it turned out really well I think. Again, it’s amazing seeing the connections between these different chapters in the SW galaxy. Hopefully I sparked some interesting thoughts and conversations here. Catch you next week!

Rebel Transmissions: The Holocrons Of Fate

If some deep Rebels discussion is the kind of knowledge you’re seeking and just what you’re hopin’ for, no need to smash two holocrons together — you’re already in the right place! Pff OK I’m probably giving myself more credit than I deserve but I certainly do hope you get something out of this…
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode I, Episode VI, Episode VII, The Clone Wars “Siege Of Mandalore” arc, Rebels episodes Twilight Of The Apprentice, Steps Into Shadow, and The Holocrons Of Fate

Ah, it’s so very nice seeing Ezra and Kanan chatting like they used to! They spent much of the last episode out of balance, so it feels great getting an episode focused mostly on the unconventional master-and-padawan-team. Granted, they’re chatting about the Sith holocron, which you’d think by now would be old news, but Ezra just sorta kinda really wants to know where it is. After all, Ezra reasons, why else did Yoda send them to Malachor if not for all that Sith-destroying knowledge? Kanan believes it was for the chance to defeat them, it just… didn’t go well. Y’know that’s one question I’ve been pondering for a while but never really queried on the blog itself. Why Malachor when it seemed to do more harm than good? Not that Yoda could’ve known what would happen, but what specifically did he have in mind when he pointed the Jedi Rebels in that direction? Was it for a chance like Kanan has surmised? I kinda doubt messing with the dark side was what the master had in mind, but we may never know for sure. Just gotta do like Sabine in season one and trust that everything’ll make sense in the end. But their chat’s put on hold as they come upon a Rebel transport that’s been torn apart. The sole survivor makes mention of a red blade… and the unfortunate fact he was forced to spill his guts on the Ghost‘s location. Ezra and Kanan immediately think they’ve got another inquisitor problem. IDK man the Empire’s lost, like, four in the last couple years; it’s not the best investment. No, the one wielding the red blade is not working for the Empire… he just wields one for the sheer fun of it. Dude… when Maul stepped into the holo from behind Hera… I think my heart stopped. It’s not like I didn’t know he was gonna be involved this episode, but I had no idea it’d be so soon. And I was already nervous about this one to begin with. It’s a well-known fact that when the former Darth gets involved, things will end badly… one way or another. Anyone who’s spent any time watching The Clone Wars will know this. Heck, even if your only knowledge of him was gained from Twilight Of The Apprentice, you know this. So him… on board the Ghost… with the people most important to Kanan and Ezra… O_O It’s NBD really Maul just wants the Sith ‘cron back. And also Kanan’s old Jedi ‘cron. Some Jedi might’ve called no deal, but these Jedi go along with it… reluctantly. At this point I’m relieved nobody’s died yet (I mean, this is Maul we’re talking about), but I’m also a little concerned what will happen to the rest of the galaxy if they take up this offer. Right now they’ve got bigger fish to fry though… getting that Sith holocron’s gonna be a bit of a challenge.
So again, MAUL. IN THE GHOST. WITH KANAN AND EZRA’S FAMILY-CREW. And did I mention the former Mandalore welcome-wagon droids that are now deadly blaster-wielders? *Faints from terror* I spent the entirety of this episode literally quivering. And honestly there’s no reason I shouldn’tve been… he killed Qui-Gon, killed Satine, blinded Kanan… and he did it all so quickly, so out-of-nowhere, and in turn left me in tears. I was trying to prepare myself for the worst, but I knew I’d still be unprepared either way. Every breathing second I was on edge. So when he asks Hera for a tour by not really asking ’cause he had his lightsaber all up in her face… shoot there’s no emoticon I can type that properly defines the feeling of sheer terror running through me at that moment. The Old Master’s really only interested in the part of the tour where he finds Kanan’s ‘cron. Doesn’t stop him from making some color commentary on the others quarters onboard though. DUDE THAT RUDENESS WAS UNCALLED FOR. WHO SPIT IN YOUR BEAN CURD? Though it does make you wonder a little what Ezra and Zeb’s room smells like. We already know that evidently Zeb has a particularly strong scent, and apparently Ezra kinda smells like Lothal sewers (or at least did). I’m gonna say it probably resembles a mixture of corn chips, sweat, and body spray XP Sorry that probably wasn’t the knowledge you were looking for. But hey, one thing I love about SW is its tangibleness, its relatability, just how very real it is, down to the finest details. Now enough weirdness, once Maul finally enters Kanan’s quarters things get real. Maul won’t just search the premises himself, oh no, that would be too much work for an old zabrak like himself. It’s so much easier to do a little dark side mindreading like Kylo Ren made famous. Oh gosh that was horrifying to watch. I mean, when he uttered Kanan’s former name I got literal chills. Hera’s been a complete bosslady this whole time and peppered her captor with sass and shot him well-aimed death glares, but that in that instant she no longer looks as certain. She looks so broken and ashamed when Maul comes upon the holocron… 😥 All my messed-up emotions aside, it’s actually still pretty cool watching him do that move; I had no idea anybody but Kylo knew how to do it, so that begs a few questions. Or it could just be a move darksiders don’t do a lot for some reason. Either way *shudders*
Elsewhere, Ezra finally got to meet Kanan’s good friend, the Bendu. Right after he borrowed their sensor-pole (or “thumper” as I now know they’re called) and invited the spidercrabs over for a visit. Ezra knows good and well these crawlers are trouble, and he doesn’t hesitate to defend his master, despite Kanan’s objections. It’s about then when the Bendu finally arrives in his magnificent, awe-inspiring way. Ezra is kinda shocked ’cause he wasn’t sure this Bendu guy was actually real. Kanan’s smile I’m sure is partly due to hearing the friendly beast’s voice again, but I imagine there was a dash of I-told-you-so smugness in there too 🙂 After hearing of Maul’s interest in the holocrons, Bendu believes he’s intending to combine the two ‘crons — something that could potentially cause some big problems. When you mix a Jedi holocron and a Sith holocron, you get the potential to see the future or have a question answered through the Force… which sounds good on the surface, but this has happened before and it does not end well. OK Wow. Ezra doesn’t really care what Maul’s gonna do with it, he just wants to protect the fam. The Bendu tells Ez that if he wants that imbalance-causing pyramid, he’s gonna have to find it with Kanan’s help. Also it may be in a dark mysterious cave. Had everything gone Ez’s way he’dve gone completely alone with his lightsaber at his side, but instead all he’s got when he enters that cave is a flashlight and Kanan on the com. He might not a fan of this plan now, but he’ll definitely be a fan later…
Back on the Ghost, Maul was yelling at a smol blue box. I’m sorry man this made me laugh so hard even though it shouldn’t have. Mostly it’s because I started imagining him reacting the same way with other small objects. Smartphones, TV remotes, frozen entrees… “YOU WILL YIELD TO MY POWERRRR!” XD While he tries to crack open Kanan’s ‘cron, the crew decides to make their move. Oh goodness gracious I love love this scene. Maul is one of the deadliest villains in the SW galaxy, but he don’t scare the Ghost fam. Sabine, Hera, and Zeb utterly tear up those smiley-droids with the hands cuffed! And then they magnetize him to the ceiling! Oh that was so awesomely genius I just love it! These guys never fail to blow my mind with their awesome genius! Of course then Maul eventually got off the ceiling and got the upper hand and made clear he had no problem killing them. But it was a great stunt regardless. Aw boo Maul why ya gotta be like that? But hey, he still hadn’t killed anyone so that’s a win if nothing else.
So getting the Sith ‘cron was going great. Sorta. Maybe it would’ve gone better if Ezra had just kept to the left like Kanan told him to. Instead he walks down the right tunnel and loses his flashlight and his comlink just like that. Now it all up to Master Jarrus. “Perhaps master and apprentice will rediscover their balance… or perhaps they will be eaten. Such is the way of things.” Bendu just tells it like it is XD Yeah Ezra was a little surprised when Kanan fished him out of that crawler-infested hole. And again when his master calmly Force-connected with another crabspider and it quietly walked away. Could it be Kanan’s not as broken as he believed? As they continue their search, Ezra apologizes for what he felt he allowed to happen. Kanan assures Ezra it wasn’t his fault and he didn’t blame him. The only forgiving that needs to be done here is for young Bridger to forgive himself. The hug that follows gives me alllllllll the feels. I’d believed they’d come back into balance at the end of the last episode, but actually… this is where the real balance was restored. And it is a beautiful thing. And that’s all I got; I should have more to say but I lost my train of thought dangit. All I know is Bendu’s smile matches my own :3 Don’t worry I’ll figure this out by the time I do the season recap! Anyway, so together Ezra and Kanan come upon the Sith ‘cron at last, perched safely on a spider’s back. You’d think that wasn’t the safest safest place ever, since I’d figure it’d get lost if the spider moved around and dropped it or something, but I guess the Bendu knows something we don’t. Using the Force they’re able to get the ‘cron without a hitch. Of course soon as Ezra turns around oh look there’s another crawler/spider//spidercrab/crabspider/whatever the canon name’s supposed to be! Kanan’s response? “Don’t be a threat, go in peace” And suddenly I understood the spider-Force connection I’d been missing last episode. And just like that, master and apprentice walked out of the cave unscathed and truly back in sync. Bendu is proud of their progress, but warns them that their troubles aren’t over, as one of them’ll have to help with the ‘cron-combining too. And well… you know. Potentially dangerous stuff, that knowledge. Ezra looks to Kanan for their game plan from here, but all his master knows is they’ve gotta relax and not let Maul’s fear tactics get to them. “You don’t sound relaxed” “But I look relaxed.” At least you look relaxed Ez, I don’t look or sound that way! I’m a quivering little chihuahua over here! Especially as they stepped into the hangar and there’s Maul looking chill like nothing’s weird. He sends “his” apprentice off to go get the holocrons ready while he shows Master Jarrus the door. And by “door” I mean “airlock”. I’d already seen this clip at Celebration but it didn’t make it any less terrifying a second time. Or a third time. Or any other time. I don’t think I’ve made clear enough how terrifying this is: KANAN HAS BEEN SUCKED OUT INTO COLD DARK UNPREDICTABLE SPACE. I literally couldn’t breathe. By far that was the longest twenty seconds of my life. HE HAD ICE FORMING ON HIM, MAN. The instant I noticed that I was shook. One of the closest calls in SW history right there, but also one seriously seriously amazing use of the Force. Seriously. And I have run out of words again. Forgive me the feels are too much.
With ‘crons in hand, Ezra and Maul are ready to get this junk over with. I couldn’t help but keep wondering if Ezra had another plan, like maybe to get Maul to ask the holocron a dumb question or something (“why is blue milk blue?” perhaps). But it seems Ez is ready to take advantage of the opportunity. He wants to find out how to destroy the Sith, while the Old Master is looking for… hope. I know I’m not the only one who found that utterly fascinating. It first took me back to Malachor, to the time we briefly saw Maul’s humanity. His life has been so full of failure and darkness, a little hope could change everything. In my everyday life “hope” is a beautiful word, but for Maul… I imagine it’s something entirely different. Especially where he is now as he desperately seeks purpose and a legacy. And then the holocrons came together, emitting a light that grows more and more intense with the possibility the darksider and the lightsider will find the answers they’re looking for…
Things looked pretty grim for the Ghost crew as Maul’s mechs draw their weapons. But in a flash, Kanan jumps in and lightsabers the smiley-droids apart in one fell swoop. And then uses the Force to snap his comrades’ cuffs clean off. It was impossible not to cheer. KANAN IS A BOSS. I don’t exaggerate when I say I feel this is one of his most defining moments. So much wow. Now he’s got his apprentice to rescue, and Hera and company are by his side all the way. YAYYYYYY FAMILYYYYY ^w^
So far Maul hadn’t had much luck finding any answers, but Ezra dug in deeper as he began to see something. By the time the rest of Ghost crew got there, the room was bathed in blinding light. None of them could see — except Kanan. He could actually see Ezra and Maul amidst the bright flash of the Force, and he was gonna get Ez out of there. Padawan was a little busy atm tho he really wanted them answers. Kanan calls for him, reiterating Bendu’s warning. Maul insists he keep it up ’cause they’re so close. And then… “I SEE HIM…” “TWIN SUNS…” O.O His master voices once more to look away, and finally Ezra takes the ‘crons apart, releasing them from the light and ending their Q&A session with the Force. Oh gosh I’m completely butchering this, but the important thing is, everyone’s OK. Including Maul who seems a little too happy right now as he flies off muttering “HE LIVES!“. Before we talk about anything else I gotta talk about that. My instant thought was Obi-Wan. ‘Cause man I can’t think of anyone else Maul would be that excited about. And then I thought OK if that happens then what if Maul goes after someone his adversary cares about? Like a certain Force-sensitive boy he’s watching over? The idea is utterly gutwrenching. My only comfort is that, well, I certainly would love to see ol’ Ben again! But otherwise yeah dis is bad. I could be totally off but don’t tell me you didn’t think it, too. Anyway, as for Ezra, he isn’t sure what he saw except for a lot of places. What it says to me is he saw hints of Luke’s journey, maybe even some of Anakin’s. I didn’t think about this until after the episode, but though clearly the dark side lives on (See: the Knights of Ren), Vader defeating Palpatine really was the destruction of the Sith, at least the group known as the Sith. Though we all know that story, I look forward to seeing further how this incredible crew influences that story. And how, in small ways, they help bring about that destiny.
Welp I hope that made sense. I hate that I didn’t do as well on this, because this is truly an incredible incredible episode. Things are super-tense and super-terrifying with twists at every turn, but by the end of the episode there’s a sense of victory. Yeah I know Maul’ll be back… but scary as he is, I’m kinda looking forward to seeing him again 🙂 OK I’m done sorry for the trainwreck post next week will be better byeeeee.

Rebel Transmissions: The Protector Of Concord Dawn

In continuing on my week-late Transmissions, today we’re talking about The Protector Of Concord Dawn! Oh I’m excited to be writing about this magnificent clash of the Mandos and the Rebs and what is most definitely one of Sabine’s most shining moments! So let’s get to talkin’!
NOTE: Contains spoilers from The Clone Wars Season 5, Rebels episodes Legacy and The Protector Of Concord Dawn

So since the Empire sent them back on the run, the mini-Alliance has been having it tough trying to do anything these days. They’re in need of a new hyperspace route, and Sabine has brought an option of her own to the table, a shortcut through a Mandalorian territory called Concord Dawn. Ohhh yess I love that we got to see some more Mandos in this episode! They’re an absolutely fascinating bunch, from their history to their politics to their fancy armor, and ever since that last time we saw their world in The Clone Wars, I’ve had about a zillion questions consuming my mind like so many rathtars. And instead of simply just going back to Mandalore, we get to explore a new branch of their society and a new chapter of their history, as well as new things we didn’t know about their politics and warfare. Anyway, so while Mandalore itself is under Imperial control (yus I was right!), the Imps don’t dare cross the Protectors, who actually helped train clones and fight the Clone Wars back in the day. That last fact is really cool, isn’t it? More on that later. Right now the Rebs are trying to figure out how to go about taking this shortcut. Sato figures it’ll involve the big guns, but Kanan suggests asking nicely. Never would I have figured Kanan to be a “negotiator”. Not that I don’t think he’s capable of talking stuff out, but he just tends to go the more lightsabering-blastering route in most cases. But this is the first time we’ve seen him with a real opportunity to do so, since most of the time they Rebels are lightsabering-blastering those who really wouldn’t listen to diplomacy. Kanan figures they’d be better served not to start any more wars, and Hera wholeheartedly agrees. Plus, having a crew like them on their side would be epic. Sato can’t deny that logic. So Hera heads out with Sabine at her side to go and meet up with the Protectors. Ezra’s all “Whoaaa we just have to ask them? I didn’t know you could do that!”. Well, unfortunately it didn’t quite quite go that way. The Protector known as Fenn Rau has had some dealings with the Empire and doesn’t particularly think highly of these Rebels, and all the guns end up getting pointed in the Phoenixes’ direction. With two Rebs downed Hera sends Sabine and the last Phoenix ahead of her. That very brave move ultimately puts her in the path of laserfire, and her ship comes out of hyperspace decimated… and with her injured and unconscious inside it. Aughh I don’t know about you but this had me so scared. Of course it’s partly due to the fact that we love Hera to pieces, but it’s also because of all the Ghost crew, she seems to always have everything under control. When Kanan and Ezra and Sabine and Zeb and Chopper are fending off red lightsabers and laserfire, Hera’s always at the helm of the Ghost and has their backs from the air. Though we’re all aware the space battles are dangerous and anything could happen, I think it’s easy to just automatically assume Hera’ll come out on top every time. So the one time she doesn’t… ohh I was terrified. This episode definitely is a wake-up call reminder as to how absolutely dangerous this job is, and the risks our heroes take every day. Kanan and Sabine’s expressions… they show such a deep concern and fear for her it breaks my heart and tears me all up emotionally. I don’t think I breathed normally again until it was confirmed that Hera was alive and would heal. I’m sorry I might cry right now rewatching this… seriously man. The rock-solid, heart-and-soul of this family… downed just like that… it feels so wrong, so unfair… can’t blame Sabine for wanting Rau to pay. Forget negotiating, Sabine’s done ready to “negotiate” all over that punk’s FACE! Wait that didn’t make sense, but you get the picture. Kanan’s going to go on a solo mission to their base, but Sabine has no interest in staying behind. Ezra and Zeb wanted to join up too but Kanan decided they wouldn’t be in this episode and picks Chopper as his sole crewmate. Chopper proudly whacks Ezra on the leg to celebrate his win XD I’m so glad I at least got to include one XD moment so far. These posts usually have that emoji in large numbers but this one’s pretty heavy so yeah…
So as you can figure, Sabine does not stay behind. It doesn’t take long for Kanan to find the Mando girl tagged along aboard the Phantom. It’s absolutely great getting to see Kanan and Sabine have an adventure of their own. We haven’t gotten to see a lot lot of how they work together one-on-one, and we get a pretty spectacular blend of dad-and-teen-daughter vibes and Jedi-Mando friction 🙂 Turns out Kanan was coming here to more so try and recruit the Protectors rather than fry their fleet. Sabine is completely against this plan, figuring that this is one situation where peace isn’t the best answer, and also not a fan of having these vicious supercommandos as coworkers. But bro don’t care he’s doin’ what he’s doin’. Ah yes Jedi and Mandalorians… I could talk awhile on this subject. Luke vs. Boba Fett, Obi-Wan vs. Jango Fett, Obi-Wan vs. Deathwatch, Obi-Wan’s Jedi ideals vs. Satine’s pacifist ideals, Ahsoka vs. Deathwatch, the entire history of Mandos vs. Jedi itself! Somehow, even when they’re fighting the same battles, they still don’t get along! It’s almost as if high levels of midichlorians and Mando blood are akin to oil and water. But whether it’s a full-on fight or just a pointed discussion, it’s still so darn fun to watch every time XD And oh wow I just got really really off-subject. But man after seeing this episode and watching the Rebels Recon it was impossible for me to stop talking about all this Mando-ness.
Anyway, so Kanan’s going to do some talking and if that doesn’t work, Sabine blows stuff up. Which seems to be likely to happen as they witness Fenn Rau getting some cash from an Imperial, and making a point to let them know if there’s any more Rebel trouble. So while Miss Wren starts sticking some explosives around, Kanan goes to have a little chat with Rau. And by “little chat” I mean literally an actual discussion. Makes sense he would keep things chill since once upon a time, Fenn saved him and his master during a Clone Wars battle. It’s really cool learning about this, because it seemed more than often that most battles were fought by Jedi, clones, and Republic militants, but we now know that they were only scratching the surface of people who fought. And if you think about it even more, it’s really really cool knowing Fenn and his Protectors joined the fight, considering Mandalore generally kept their noses out of the war business. Despite Fenn very nearly killed Hera, Kanan doesn’t do anything but treat the Protector as a friend. Who’s got two thumbs and supreme negotiating skillz? THIS GUY! Fenn is still pretty suspish but actually listens instead of bringing out the blaster. Getting a weapon-wielding Mando to listen… didn’t know anyone was capable of doing that! 😛
So Sabine was doing well blanketing the base with detonators, up until once false move led to her coming face-to-face — er helmet-to-helmet — with quite a few Manderrs. She handles them with straight-up confidence, making it clear she’s no stranger, no offworlder wearing stolen armor. She’s all Mando and this armor was hand-made with her folks. Yes prior to this episode’s release, I remember seeing a headline on Animation Magazine’s website… “SABINE HAS FAMILY REUNION ON STAR WARS REBELS” and I’m all O.O at that. So I got this ridiculous image in my head of a 1960s squeaky-clean domestic American sitcom family wearing Mandalorian armor XD Ultimately that wasn’t the case, but this isn’t the first time that site’s gotten their SW logic backwards. But it sure had me intrigued. We do learn a bit more about who she is and where she came from, however. She’s a straight-up Wren clan girl from house Vizsla! Only Deathwatch on her mom’s side of the family. So yeah wow that offers up some major intrigue-yness! Don’t have a clue who her parents are, but they must be fun people if they hung out with the DW (though they do lose some cool points for putting their daughter into the Imperial Academy, but nonetheless they’re Mandalorians which by default makes them super-cool). I have a few theories, but I’ll save them for another day. But right now Sabine has no time for “family reunions” of any sort, she’s still got a score to settle!
So Kanan’s discussion was going well… sorta. Fenn really isn’t interested in being on a side that he feels won’t win, even though Kanan makes some pretty solid points on the Empire’s loyalty, or lack of it. And then rushes in another Protector with news on an intruder. You can probably figure who that is. Fact is, Wrens and Protectors don’t get along too well and Fenn calls out a fight to the death. Sabine eagerly accepts the challenge. And we’re all “OH DANG WHAT ARE YOU DOING GIRL?”. Kanan interjects that they’d all be better served to all leave as friends, but it seems Miss Wren is dead serious about making Fenn Rau seriously dead. Master Jarrus is just about done with everybody right now. “WHAT IS WITH YOU MANDALORIANS?! CAN’T SOLVE ANYTHING EXCEPT THROUGH THE END OF A BLASTER!” Yep we’ve all thought that. He knows good and well this is not the right move, but Sabine only asks he trust her. And like that the standoff began and we were all on the edge of our seats. I was literally thinking “OhhhMG someone is going to die today…”. But then in one swift move, Sabine shoots first… and only hits Fenn’s hand, knocking the blaster out of his grip. “There are alternatives to killing” comes Sabine’s well-timed Obi-Wan-esque reply, right as she set off the detonators and made sure those Protectors wouldn’t be shooting anyone down for a bit. Much applause is in order for her. It happens to be though that Rau’s ship was the only one she didn’t blast into oblivion, so it’s time for Sabine and Kanan to make a dash after him. Also this line… “ARE YOU HAPPY? YOU GOT TO BLOW STUFF UP!” “I thought you’d be glad I didn’t kill anyone!” XD Anyway, so Kanan skipped the trouble of getting in the Phantom and just jumped right on top of Rau’s ship. It would’ve worked really well had the guy not been flying so fast. Well, at least he got in a good lightsabering of one of the engines while he was hanging around. He did eventually get his balance and went and lightsabered the controls as well as knocking our Protector friend into dreamland. Then Sabine and Chopper flew in and the guys got aboard and the day was saved! Well that last line I wrote was stupid cheesy. Sorry about that. So naturally the rest of the Protectors are ready to bring the fight to the Rebs, but Fenn… considering he’s sorta here as a prisoner, he’s going to let the Rebels take whatever shortcuts they need. He may not be the nicest guy right now, but I wouldn’t say he’ll never be… I think he might enjoy being a part of the mini-Alliance. Only time will tell. At least the Empire won’t be getting involved, and that’s I think the only thing these two sides can agree on right now. Good thing is Hera’s definitely feeling better. Upon Miss Wren making note she made sure not to take any lives when there didn’t need to be, Hera comments “you’re starting to sound more like a Jedi than a Mandalorian”. “I guess I was raised right” is Sabine’s perfect reply. And I pretty much died of feels right here. Mandos definitely have this thing about revenge; they fight over principles more often than real problems, and they don’t take failure among each other too lightly. By their standards, avenging Hera by killing Fenn was perfectly acceptable, but that doesn’t make it right. When facing down this man who’d hurt her and the people she cares for, she was amazing and did the right thing… a truly straight-up Jedi thing. And seeing how Kanan and Hera have made such a positive impact on her… that could not be more beautiful.
And I think words failed me there. But seriously what an episode! It’s been a blast (pun intended) unlocking another key to Sabine’s past as well as seeing her grow as a person as well as just seeing her blow things up 🙂 Can’t wait to bring you another Transmission next time around!

Uncovering The Lost Missions: The Disappeared Part 1

Can I just say how sorry I am that it’s taken me this long to getting around to blogging? It just took me sooooo long to do that Summer Reads one that it made me not look forward to doing another blog, even though I knew that the post on this TCW episode one would come easily. And on top of that, a glitch in the site literally made half of the blog disappear! (Ironic no?) So anyway, after being caught up in all the drama of SW-ian war and politics, It was great to step into a lighter, truly unique storyline with an unlikely duo at the helm — Mace Windu and Jar Jar Binks! So let’s get it started as we look deeper into The Disappeared Part 1!
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode I, Episode II, The Clone Wars Microseries, TCW Episodes The Mandalore Plot, Heroes On Both Sides, and The Disappeared Part 1

Lost Missions cover title for The Disappearing P1
(Original screencap credit: Netflix)

So once again, it seems that peaceful planets have trouble staying that way during the war, but it’s not the all-too common Separatist invasion problem this time… some of Bardotta’s Force-sensitive-but-not-Jedi leaders have vanished and Queen Julia knows who she’s gonna call for help… and who that is kinda leaves us all going “WHUT?“. Not Padme, not Bail… but well, Jar Jar. First of all, let me clarify if you don’t already know that I actually do like Jar Jar and don’t have an inch of disdain for him, so if you are like me in that way, you’re safe here 🙂 Moving back to the story. I love Obi-Wan’s response: “WHY WOULD ANYONE REQUEST THE PRESENCE OF JAR JAR BINKS?!”. I don’t think the guy ever managed to warm up to the Naboo “local”, but even so I love his subtlely disdainful comments that he’s so good at making. While no one gets why in “why Jar Jar?”, but they do know the why in the “why not a Jedi”. Evidently the Bardottans weren’t cool with the Jedi taking in their Force-sensitive kids a while back and thus, yeah, they aren’t on speaking terms (why is it all these neutral planets are uncool with the Jedi half the time??). So knowing Representative Binks might be in over his head if something goes really wrong, Mace Windu decides to join the party, even though the Queen wasn’t cool with anyone else coming along. Ah yes, though! The awesomeness it is having Jar Jar and Mace working together! I mean, it’s a perfect concept, really; you have Mace Windu, possibly the most serious Jedi ever, the guy who can tear apart super battle droids with his bare hands and keep a straight face the whole time, the guy who rarely even allows anything more than a smirk to cross his face (and those are, like say, crazy rare to even happen), the guy who generally has everything under control even when he doesn’t. And then you have Jar Jar, innocent, clumsy, but always willing to help, who on the flip side is actually rather wise, just, and sarcastic when he wants to be. And now these two complete opposites are working together! Ah yes, so much funnnn 🙂 Right from the get-go Mace is trying to keep Jar Jar’s webby fingers off the ship controls XD And can I just mention how amazing the character animation is in this episode?? I know it’s always amazing, but something just struck me about the way Mace emotes, and the way Yoda talks, and the way Jar Jar gestures. I mean, wow. Sorry but I have to gush a little per blog, and trust me this is not the last time I’ll be doing that this post. So by the time they got to Bardotta, everyone’s like “heyyyy we didn’t invite the Jedi…”, but Jar Jar lets them know he’s cool with him, and thus Master Windu gets dubbed “servant” for the remainder of the trip 😆 Hahaha oh my… poor Mace! Second to Jar Jar! He’s probably thinking “What weird planet did I just land on?!” but he only subtlely lets in on that in his expressions, and I do mean subtlely. You think someone would’ve caught on that that wasn’t quite the case considering Jar Jar referred to him as “Master Mace is meesa humble servant”… that kinda is an oxymoron isn’t it? IDK anyway, I do want to say that Queen Julia is majorly cool. Her species is really awesome and she has a fabulous sense of style, and her personality is legit! Although the one thing that I can’t figure is how on earth (figuratively speaking) she got a normalish Earth name like “Julia”! Not that it’s a bad name, but beyond names like “Luke” and “Ben” and sorta “Han” it’s not a common sight in the SW galaxy. But I digress, so Jar Jar was able to convince her that Mace is a buddy here to help him and she’s all ” if you’re a friend of Jar Jar’s you’re a friend of me… well, kinda, don’t look too deeply into that. We’re not like, making friendship bracelets or anything”. And with all that said and done, the Queen gets everyone else out of the room so she and Jar Jar can talk. And ohhhhhhhhh myyyyyy goodnesssssss what happened next… she starts off the conversation with “It’s been a long time, my love…” and I’m all O.O and then they don’t really talk much after that ’cause they well, had a moment. So yes I must take a paragraph or two to discuss… “Jarlia” ❤ When Jar Jar was telling Mace how he and the Queen go way back I thought I was reading too deeply into what looked to be a lovey-dovey smile on his face. Turns out I was right on the money. No wonder he got all dressed up today! The great thing about them is that they just love each other plain and simple. So while Anakin and Padme kept their thing under wraps, Obi-Wan and Satine switched between awkwardness and arguing, and Ahsoka and Lux were just having a lot of teen-crush-awkwardness in general, Jar Jar and Julia had nothing holding them back. No rules, no war, no differing viewpoints… LUCKY. So I know we're all wondering how much actual meditating they were doing during that time… Mace's visible eyeroll indicates it probably wasn't enough by his standards. Plus, he's been in the dark about everything they've been discussing! Ugh playing second banana to a Gungan already can't be fun, but being a third wheel to a Gungan/Bardottan couple must be even worse. So that's about when Mace decides to make his own way in to get some word from Jar Jar. Behind the closed door Julia was about to start explaining what she knows about the disappearances when Mace walks in and the Queen will not have it. So now Jar Jar’s in the most awkward position ever and tells her he’ll be having a word with his “servant”. Only as soon as they’re out of sight Master Windu decides to have a word of his own with the Representative. Mace is all “Dude seriously what have you been doing? We’re kind of her on important business, if you haven’t forgotten!” and Jar Jar’s like “WELL I WAS ABOUT TO FIND OUT SOMETHING IMPORTANT BEFORE YOU BARGED IN! For the record, our thing is part of the reason she trusts me with this stuff!”. Mace’s expression makes it clear he’s not buying this much. But by the time Jar Jar heads back to the Queen, she might’ve disappeared. Like, literally, disappeared. And Jar Jar starts freaking out the way only he can. According to some prophecy of the Bardottans they have three days to save the Queen or else an era of darkness will fall across the galaxy (um I guess it’s best we don’t bring up the fact that the Galactic Empire will happen and darkness will fall one way or the other…). But amidst the panic, Jar Jar does his awesome representin’ thing and with a little help from Master Windu on what questions to ask, he’s able to chill out the council. Evidently the prophecy’s origins will take the duo to an ancient cursed temple. For all the confidence Jar Jar had in his speech, he just knows that this isn’t likely going to end well (I mean we are talking about an ancient cursed temple here. Wheeeeeee…) And yeah as soon as he finds a possible clue in the dark shadowy halls of the temple some crazy masked warrior guy turns the gungan invisible. Mace isn’t able to get to him in time, but there’s no ancient stone door that this awesome Jedi can’t open, and off he goes to save his comrade.
So by the time we see Jar Jar again, it’s not long before we can actually see him again, of course he’s in a cage in this dark creepy raging-fire-pit-for-whatever-reason cavern. And as he finds out from one of the captured Force-sensitive Bardottans (who also has an Earth-ish name, Joseph), these cult crazies are actually sucking the Force out of them one by one as a sacrifice. Um, RUDE. So it’s safe to say they’re all in trouble. Thankfully, Jar Jar has his comlink on hand and Mace is on his way… but WILL HE MAKE IT IN TIME?? Wait why’d I just do that this isn’t where the episode ends… forget I said that. Though yeah Jar Jar might be next in the Force-removal line, even with him not being the most Force-sensitive guy in the room. But to answer the last question yes Mace makes it in time, just at the last second. And before he knows it he’s trying to keep Jar Jar alive and fight the cult dudes at the same time. NBD for Master Windu. Even Jar Jar gets in on the fight, K.O’ing the bad guys in his own klutzy/accidentally heroic manner. And all the while they’re doing this on stone paths right over boiling hot lava, so yeah just another day in the life, right? So Mace was doing his awesomely epic fighting and beating the stew out of the cultists until the last one turned tail and ran away from him. Jar Jar had finally gotten on his feet to try and save the Queen (who is thankfully still alive for the moment), but the baddies managed to grab her and get her aboard their ship before Representative Binks could do anything. Oh noes.
Returning to the council, Jar Jar reassures them that, along with his Jedi friend, they will succeed in his mission and save the Queen and defeat the evil cult and in turn save the entire galaxy! A tall order, but not entirely impossible for this crazy awesome duo. As the two exchange a smile/smirk (you know who did what, most likely), we can only hope for what will happen next and for our heroes to come out of this one unscathed…
And thus ends another awesome Uncovering blog! *Faints, with head slamming onto the keyboard* And hopefully, this will be the end of late-arriving, procrastinated blog posts for a good long ol’ time 🙂 Until next time around…
