The Celebration Orlando 2017 Post!

First of all, I apologize for not having finished my SWR season recap post this past week like I said I would. Stuff came up. But right now, the biggest, most important thing to talk about is CELEBRATION! A time of year I look forward to as much as Christmas and my own birthday! There’s so much awesome stuff to talk about, so I’ll update this with every exciting panel I see so I can share my fangirling with all of you!
NOTE: There will be spoilers depending on the panel I’m discussing.

40 YEARS OF STAR WARS
They kicked this thing off with a bang that would rival the destruction of the two Death Stars and Starkiller base combined! Every time I turned around they brought out a guest worth screaming about! To see the master himself, George Lucas, there… oh my gosh I screamed so loud. And then followed that up each time afterward. This was a hugely special panel for so many reasons. One for me was that, I honestly haven’t watched many of the bonus features (don’t always have the time sigh), and I hadn’t seen a number of the actors and filmmakers interviewed before this. It was a marvelous first time! I’m not gonna lie I cried a lot too. That opening video hit me like a boulder-dozer of feels! And oh that dedication to Carrie Fisher… and then the awe-inspiring surprise John Williams performance! Every minute was precious and stunning and wonderful I absolutely can’t! I can only imagine where Celebration goes from here!

Assorted Fangirl Musings
– Ian McDiarmid always looks so young to me. He’s just amazing.
– Hayden Christiansen still is so much Anakin it’s incredible. I’ve missed seeing his face around here something awful!
– On that note, I was so glad to hear briefly from Qui-Gon and Mace! Er… Liam Neeson and Samuel L. Jackson, I mean. To know they still remember and value their time spent in the films and appreciate the fans is utterly heart-warming.
– Also, something about the image of a darksider Jar Jar Binks is actually really epic.
– Hearing the stories of how George and the original cast met was an absolute treat in every way possible.
– Mark Hamill’s original audition video is incredible. HIS ACTING, YOU GUYS. IT’S SUBLIME. EVEN WAY BACK WHEN ON AN AUDITION TAPE.
– Somehow I’d forgotten how tall Peter Mayhew was and now I doubt I’ll ever forget.
– I adore Anthony Daniels. I know that’s a no-brainer but, again, seeing these actors outside of the films and hearing them tell their stories of making them… it’s… words can barely describe.
– Also first time seeing Billy Dee Williams interviewed I think ever. He’s still the smoothest! 😀
– When the Harrison Ford showed up… I think everything in me exploded. I had no idea he’d never been to a Celebration prior, so that made it all the more special.
– His seamless Indiana Jones drop cracked me up. HE IS SUCH A DELIGHT OMG!
– Safe to say Carrie’s daughter has one of the best dresses ever. Her speech was beautiful.
– Like I said before, the dedication video was so moving and so special… when they started showing all the little girls in Leia costumes I think I really started weeping. In a good way though.
– And again, a standing ovation almost doesn’t seem good enough for John Williams. If I could fly or hover and applaud, I would. Same for the spectacular work done by the orchestra! Like wow! Made me want to go and buy all the soundtracks I haven’t yet bought right now.
– I clapped ’til my hands were numb, man. But that’s normal 🙂

SIDESTORY: FORCES OF DESTINY ANNOUNCEMENT
Just read the article on the new Forces Of Destiny microseries and product line and I’m excited. New animated shorts starring the bossladies of the Star Wars galaxy! How great is that?! I love the character designs and style, and since they’re all canon, it’s useless to resist! It’s really nice seeing them trying a line specifically aimed at girls. Star Wars has never been short on awesome female characters, and certainly never short on female fans (such as myself), and it’s not that it was a need, by any means (I’m always going to be mainly a 3.75 collector myself), but just imagine how many young girls might be further drawn into the saga on part of these new stories and merch? These princesses, Jedi, and rebels are about to draw in a whole new generation to the fangirl side of the Force, and that’s something to get excited about! 😀

DAVE FILONI: ANIMATED ORIGINS AND UNEXPECTED FATES
You know me, I could never turn down an opportunity to hang with Dave and Pablo! I absolutely loved digging into the origins of so many great characters and stories that we’ve seen told this last near-decade. I’m gonna be honest I was only able to watch this via livestream and was disgusted I couldn’t see the beautiful art and storyreel footage. But even so, it was nothing short of a fantastic panel with two of my favorite filmmakers. Bro I could listen to their stories for days. And naturally, this all got me really hyped for what we’re going to see Saturday…

Assorted Fangirl Musings
– Those Clones and Rebel cosplayers that came up early on? They were astounding. The Hondo was so perfect it was like he was real. The young Rex and S3 Ezra were perfect too. Like wow man. Much applause.
– I love that Ahsoka was almost Ashla! Who’da thunk? Just a neat little connection.
– I’m ecstatic to hear Wolffe and Gregor might be back! Also the Nine Old Men thing warmed my little heart. I would’ve loved to have seen that :3
– These stories are literally so amazing. We almost had Savage and Satine in Rebels! I understand why they didn’t go that route ultimately, but wow what an image! I’ll never watch the opening of Twin Suns again without seeing that in my mind’s eye.
– I about cried at my inability to see the images everyone was fangasming over tho…
– Hehe everyone going Kanera-crazy cracked me up. But also yeah that sounds like an utterly beautiful scene. The idea Kanan, Hera, and Zeb were all processing the kids growing up and leaving home… such family feels!
– Though I couldn’t see the Bane-Boba showdown, it sounded beyond epic. Corey Burton and Daniel Logan are just incredible, and the whole prospect just made me ravenous for more on their characters’ stories.
– ALSOOO the fact that Durge almost made it into TCW is epic. I almost forgot to mention that.

IAN MCDIARMID: TALES FROM THE DARK SIDE
So Mr. McDiarmid was wonderful, that’s an understatement. Again, I haven’t seen a lot of interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff with him, so everything about this was a fantastic new experience. Definitely gained a lot lot more respect for the Senator/Chancellor/Emperor/Darth and Ian’s stellar acting skills. Watching the scene between Anakin and Palpatine at the opera (or as I nicknamed it, the fish ballet) again left me kind of breathless at the perfection of his performance (and Hayden’s too!). Also have to say I love listening to Ian not only because of the fascinating stories he was telling, but also because his voice is amazing. So smooth and so well-spoken and articulate! Which is why it was spectacular and spine-chilling to hear him do that Emperor laugh! An absolute blast of a panel all around! It’s tempting to drop everything right now and watch Episode III again, but the day’s not over…!

RAY PARK: PREPARE TO BE MAULED
Once again, Ray Park proves to be one of the greatest human beings to ever live. His stunts and sweet moves never fail to leave me in awe, and he’s every bit as much a nice guy as Maul is a bad guy 😀 He and Warwick made this panel nothing short of an absolute blast. I loved hearing his stories from working on set (and making lightsaber noises with Mr. Neeson and Mr. McGregor!), watching him performing stunts like an absolute blazing tornado of energy, teaching lightsaber techniques to the fans… oh and I smiled so hard when he mentioned he was a huge Toy Story fan! He’s seriously just so so great. After seeing him at last year’s Celebration I’ve learned his panels are ones you should never miss.

THE LAST JEDI
OMG THIS PANEL WAS EVERYTHING AND MORE. Josh Gad was a brilliant host, Rian Johnson clearly’s a brilliant director, and there’s so so much to get hyped about! And that TEASER! It left me reeling in the best way. It’s a long way to Alderaan, and by “Alderaan” I mean December, but this helped just the slightest bit with the wait 🙂 Allow me to elaborate further in my assorted fangirl musings:

Assorted Fangirl Musings
– Josh Gad is just like us and I love that.
– Like say, so much love for Mr. Johnson, and Ms. Kennedy too!
– OK so y’know I didn’t get to see The Force Awakens panel two years ago, so this is some of the first BTS stuff I’ve seen with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. And now I love them more than ever, and I didn’t think it was possible for me to love them more!
– I’m amazed Daisy could keep a straight face with Josh asking her questions like that. Nahhh Rey’s parents are probably just an average Joe and Jane, right…? XP
– John is promising more Finn and Poe adventures! Sounds good to me! *Imagines Finn and Poe in “The Boys Are Back” number in High School Musical 3* XD
– BB-8 IS HERE AND HE’S REAL! OK I already knew that they’ve got a functioning BB out there, but just seeing him here… it’s incredible. I’m amazed he was not utterly mobbed by hugging fans! I loved watching him get snippy with Josh. That was just perfect!
– Kelly Marie Tran is just a delight you guys. I absolutely can’t wait to meet Rose now!
– MARK HAMILL AGAIN! He’s still so fantastic and his stories are some of the best ever. Hearing him talk about visiting kids in hospitals and making a difference for them made me tear up.
– WOW THAT POSTER! It’s so dynamic and kind of retro and full of fantastic symbolism! I could look at it forever.
– AND THE TEASER. “Breathe… just breathe” NO I CAN’T BREATHE, LUKE!! THIS IS TOO AMAZING!!
– I won’t elaborate on it too long (I’ll save that analyzing for the next trailer), but a few pressing things on my mind…
– A) Luke and Rey seem to be all #MasterAndApprenticeGoals even if Daisy hinted her first meeting with Master Skywalker will be a little… different…
– B) Meanwhile, Poe and BB-8 are all #FriendshipGoals
– C) EVERYTHANG IS SO BEAUTIFUL OMGOODNESSGRACIOUS!
– D) Huh I thought Kylo lost that lightsaber in the fight on Starkiller Base. Did he have to build a new one (which must be hard since it’s a pretty ancient model) or did he just have an extra in his sock drawer?
– E) Biggest thing of all: “It’s time for the Jedi… to end…” WHAT.
– WAHT.
– WHAT DOES IT MEAN….?!
– Is he talking about the Jedi as a group needing to end, so they can be something different, something more? Or is he just kinda blue and done with the Force right now? I’m going with the first option for now, but you can bet this line will consume me from the inside out until one December weekend…
AHHHHHH I LOVE STAR WARS SO MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

HEROINES OF STAR WARS
So having Ahsoka, Sabine, and Rey in the same room was amazing, and with Dave, too! They kicked off the panel with the best video montage of the many many bossladies in the Star Wars galaxy and made me cry a little just with that. It was really cool just hearing their stories as well as their perspective on the depiction of strong female characters. I could honestly go on a while on the topic myself, but for now I’ll just say once again that I’m super pumped for Forces Of Destiny and for all the bossladyness that awaits us in the future of SW (like Rose!). Also two other notes: a) I seriously love the FoD Ahsoka doll and I might have to get that even though my main collecting focus is on the 3.75s. And then b) I cracked up at the original game plan for Out Of Darkness with Hera and Sabine talking about the boys XD Pff that would’ve been kinda terrible if we’d missed out on the emotional journey that episode centered around. Not that I’m adverse to future conversations tho… *COUGHKaneraCOUGHSabezraCOUGH* But yeah! Who runs the galaxy? Star Wars girls! They’re the reason I started throwing around the term “bosslady”! 🙂

MARK HAMILL’S TRIBUTE TO CARRIE FISHER
I’m not sure I can say anything that hasn’t already been said… it was equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming. Mark is so so good, so articulate, and poured out his heart so well on this. Like say, prior to this, I haven’t taken the time to watch the featurettes and interviews that would help me know the amazing people behind these characters more, and the time spent listening to Mr. Hamill, Mr. Davis, and old interview pieces from Carrie… they were really something special. I’d always sort of known that Carrie was a firecracker, but I had no idea just how much until now. You know, as I write this, I was listening to my TCW soundtrack and the track I ended up on right now was #11, “Death Of A Master”. It obviously wasn’t written for her, but this gripping, powerful piece of music really suits my emotional state. And she was a master, you know? Not of the Force, but of brilliant acting and a stellar sense of humor. She’s a princess, a senator, a general, and also an absolute master. That’s all I got man the feels are really feelsy right now…

STAR WARS REBELS
OK WOW. I HAVE NO WORDS. WHICH IS REALLY BAD SINCE I’M WRITING A BLOG. I’M UTTERLY SOBBING AND CAN’T STOP APPLAUDING YOU GUYS.
It breaks my heart kinda to know this will be the last season, but I have complete confidence they’ll end it right. And whatever they have in store next will be fantastic. I didn’t need the trailer for proof, but it certainly was great to see regardless. Yeah this won’t make it hard for me to focus on that Season 3 recap post later! 😛 I adored seeing all the cast and Filoni together again, and knowing we’re coming up on the end makes it all the more a precious moment. They’re a beautiful family… both the Ghost crew and the people behind them.

Assorted Fangirl Musings
– Dave talking about Obi-Wan and Maul gave me such feels again.
– Freddie Prinze Jr. utterly killed it in his thoughts on Kanan and Ezra. So brilliantly said!
– “Hot Kallus”?? That was a thing?! Pfff that cracked me up. He’s always been a pretty good-lookin’ dude! why’s the internet just noticing now? XD He’s looking even better than ever in the trailer, though, and I can’t wait to see him full-on Rebellin’! Also I hope we get an entire episode dedicated to watching Ezra, Zeb, and Kallus play video games like the bros they are jk.
– Also you guys how great is it that Warwick Davis is gonna be in this season?! The guy’s such a marvelous talent and a has a fantastic voice, I’m so so glad he’s getting in animated Star Wars already! And playing such a delightfully creepy character to boot!
– More Mandos yaaaaaas!
– Speaking of, that girl cosplaying as Ursa Wren was amazing. I mean… that episode came out only a few months ago! How did she do it??
– Also mad props to the Gregor cosplay, too. I love seeing people who don’t just want to don the armor suits, but become that character even without the helmet on 🙂
– Like say that trailer… on the second viewing I buried my hands in my face and wept. Vanessa Marshall’s narration… my gosh. It sets the stage so perfectly and just overwhelms me with emotions and nostalgia.
– Glad to know that we’re going to see the giant wolves I spotted in the artwork on An Inside Man.
– OK it’s so tempting right now to do a complete recap of the trailer but I don’t think I’ve got the right words to say yet. I will say a few words tho:
– A) WOW WE’RE BACK ON LOTHAL YES! I’ve been all giddy about seeing Yavin but so much of the action we’ve seen is on the world where it all began. NO I’M NOT CRYING YOU ARE.
– B) KANERA. THAT IS ALL. I GOT IT OUT OF MY SYSTEM. NO I HAVEN’T I’M CRYING HARDER NOW.
– C) Sorry I shouldn’t be writing every thought in all caps, but WAIT WAIT WAIT IS THAT BO-KATAN OR AM I COMPLETELY MISTAKEN?
– D) Final note I CAN’T WAIT FOR EVERYTHING OMG.

SMUGGLER’S REVENGE
This was definitely one of the most anticipated panels for me. I didn’t see (or hear, rather) the first one, but I adored the second one, so I was absolutely hyped to experience another one of Kyle Newman’s glorious Star Wars audio stories! The writing is stellar and so perfectly Star Wars, the acting beyond sublime, the sounds well-timed, and oh my gosh Han and Leia banter for days! It’s funny, I kept trying to close my eyes and just listen to the performance, but David Collins and Catherine Taber were so fun to watch as well as listen to! The acting is just so wow in all ways. Everyone just did so so incredibly. David is a perfect Han, and I had no idea Tom Kane was such a masterful C-3PO! I highly look forward to whatever Mr. Newman might be planning in the future! Final thought: MATTHEW WOOD’S WILLHEM SCREAM WAS THE BEST XD

Honestly you guys there are just too many amazing things to mention, it was just an incredibly bountifully joyful weekend of Star Wars. The fandom feels are running through me like electricity right now! It’s an absolute rush! I know I’ll be counting the days ’til next year 😀

Celebration Europe Excitement!

Next to film release day, there are few more thrilling days of the year than Star Wars Celebration! I felt bad that I didn’t talk about last year’s events as much as I should’ve. So this year, I’m going to write down a fangirly paragraph or two on every panel I’m able to catch! So get excited!! I’ll be updating this post as things happen.
NOTE: As far as spoilers are concerned… depends on the panel I’m talking about. Just in general you should’ve seen all the movies and the shows and stuff. And the panels too.

Let the nerding out begin!

AHSOKA’S UNTOLD TALES
Words can’t describe how fun, exciting, and feely this panel was. But I’m gonna try anyway ’cause that’s why I’m here. Just… OMG wow! We see Ahsoka riding a giant wolf and leading the Clones into battle and fighting Darth Maul and reuniting with old friends and making some new friends (at least this Nix guy anyway hehe) and pretty much just winning at everything. Beautiful concept art, a delightful storyreel clippy, and a few of the amazing people behind them… all in the same room. SO WIZARD. The panel answered some questions that needed answering and gave us the slightest beautiful little promise we might might might might see her again. Also that book. Can’t wait for that book. The excitement is electric bro. Funny story in that first sketch of Ahsoka and Nix I’ll be honest I thought that was Han for a moment XD That would be an interesting story though…

ILM SW ARCHAEOLOGY
Wasn’t 100% certain what this panel was about until I started watching it and DANGGG IT IS SO COOL! Got to learn a little what goes into recreating what we see in Episode IV for Rogue One. Can only imagine how painstaking a job that is so I applaud you heartily, ILM! Stormtrooper helmets, Star Destroyers, the Death Star… all beautifully nostalgic but beautifully new at the same time! Just taking a closer look at the Rogue One teaser again I’m astounded at the detail! And Doug Chiang talking about miniatures and card models and matte paintings?? SO COOL. The work they put into these films, again, is incredible. Oh! And the stuff they did on The Force Awakens too! This is actually the first time since that sizzle reel from a year ago I’ve really gone behind the scenes on VII, at least in a featurette/documentary sense, anyway. Yes I’m dumb and don’t have the Blu-Ray yet. Anyway, as a whole this entire panel re-reminded me what a massive amount of work goes into making these films, as well as how amazing these ILM folks are. Ahh the technology and artistry behind SW always makes me giddy :3 Also, ❤ that moonwalkin' trooper!

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY
I’m so so sorry I haven’t talked more about my excitement for this film. I mean, when those photos came out the “Rogues” were all I could think about, but I had other things to blog about so I wasn’t able to give it the attention it deserves. Certainly there will be plenty of times between now and December to talk about it, and then for the rest of my life afterward, but hopefully I’ll be able to get some thoughts out in the post today. First my gosh isn’t Gwendoline Christie such a fun host?! She made this panel even more delightful than it already was! Captain Phasma may be all business but IRL she’s an excited fan like the rest of us! I suppose that’s not too surprising because not many people working on SW these days aren’t fans from the get-go but it’s cool all the same 🙂 Anyway, it’s truly amazing how everything fell together and how Rogue One began. And the folks working on bringing to life are truly amazing as well. Wow I’m just stating the obvious aren’t I? But it’s true! All of it! *SHOT* 😛 The energy in the room when the cast came out was just on fire, and Ben Mendelsohn coming out on stage in full regalia?? I know it’s been said before but WHOAAA he just OWNED IT. Never has a white suit and cape looked so dastardly and so classy at the same time! And of course the sizzle reel was beyond fantastic. There were too many great shots, but it was often the sweet little moments that stood out to me the most in some ways. Jyn handing the fruit to the villager for one (tough girl got heart awwz!). Seeing droids and several different species was awesome. I mean, I love that the main cast is mostly human, as it further exemplifies this idea of ordinary people making an extraordinary difference, but I’m glad we get to hang out with a few nonhumans along the way too, like that floofy white dude :3 All that beautiful old-meets-new imagery in general! Honestly I loved it all and I hope I’ve made that point very clear. The whole cast is just awesome, I’ll just go ahead and say that. After reading up on the characters and seeing their photos on EW, the fangirl gears didn’t stop turning. Each of them so unique, all sort of outcasts who come together ultimately for a common purpose, I couldn’t wait to meet them all. Fun fact, Chirrut is currently the one I have the most questions about, well maybe he and Saw are tied… anyway, I look forward to sharing those thoughts at a later date. But getting to see the actors portraying them and getting a further idea of their characters’ stories makes me love them even more than before. Also K2 is perfect, but you knew that XD And howzabout that poster tho?! It’s gorgeous!! It’s just all kinds of wow all around! Similar to feelings I had last year, I can’t tell if this has made it easier to wait, since I’m getting to learn more, or harder to wait, since I’ve still gotta wait until December to see it all. Either way, hype thrusters are GO!!

STAR WARS REBELS
After glimpsing Ezra’s new look earlier this week, I have to say the SWR panel was possibly the most highly anticipated for me. Not to say any of the other panels weren’t highly anticipated, but the majority of questions and queries on my mind lied with the fate of the Ghost family. And of course, the panel didn’t disappoint. Loved seeing Warwick Davis and Dave Filoni again, and Tiya Sircar and Sam Witwer were great. Seeing Mr. Witwer was a bit of surprise for me, since I had no clue he would be involved in the next season. Somehow I figured he’d go find someone else’s life to mess up somewhere else in the galaxy, but nope bro ain’t finished yet. (EDIT I hope it was clear I was talking about Darth Maul and not Sam Witwer in this sentence. YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG MR. WITWER!!) But it’s exciting and intriguing all the same. Everything goin’ on is exciting and intriguing. I mean… wow! For one, yay I called it Sabine finally gets that jetpack! Probably not accidentally purchased from someone who stole from Boba Fett, but still IT’S A JETPACK!! Everybody’s looking good with their new looks. Though I’ll always remember Ezra for his long hair, his short cut gives him a slightly more mature look for this chapter in life as he grows up, kind of sort of Luke-ish. Kanan has more fuzz now and that’s cool XD And of course Sabine gives me major hair envy as per usual. And then there’s that little thing with a dude named Thrawn… as you may know, I haven’t read Heir To The Empire and really anything by Timothy Zahn aside from an Insider short story. But I have heard of Thrawn, and as a fan of Ryder Windham’s Clone Wars Secret Missions series, I already think the Chiss species is awesome, so it makes me happy to know not only that Thrawn is now officially canon, but that his species is too 🙂 And thanks to his involvement in Rebels, I’ll likely make a point to read the classic novel sometime soon. So no questions I’m excited about season 3! But along with that excitement, there’s also some fear too… because honestly man I have no clue if anyone’s gonna make it out of this alive. That’s what I was thinking about last year, too, but danggg I don’t know how they keep finding new ways to up the ante, but they always do and they always deliver. And that’s just one of those things I love about Rebels and SW as a whole 🙂 Oh yeah and YESSSSSSS MAZ KANATA NEEDS TO MAKE IT INTO REBELS SOMEDAY!!

THE FREEMAKER ADVENTURES
Only got to read the liveblog on this one, but still good solid stuff. They may be Legos but these guys as Lucasfilm take them seriously as serious can get! So yay/aw situation: I was right about Zander’s age, not right about Kordi. Kordi is middle child, not the firstborn like for some reason I got into my head, but that makes her bossladyness all the more impressive. Why yes I do think about these things! Thank you for noticing. Oh it must’ve been great to hear Matthew Wood speaking as Roger for the audience! Y U NO STREAM THIS??? I do love they communicate with Leland Chee to make it as believably canon as they can get, ’cause aside from the occasional Lego self-awareness and SW jokes it’s canon in my mind. And yesss the idea of the Rebs running into the Freemakers… that would be a lot of fun… assuming anyone lives after this next season… OmO Good stuff tho! Those minifigs are my children! :3

STAR WARS PUBLISHING
Great great stuff is coming in the book world. No need for me to tell you that though. A whole collection of McQuarrie art! The Complete Locations! The beautifully-illustrated storybooks! And seriously why are we Yanks not able to read the Adventures In Wild Space series yet?? We better be able to soon ’cause you know I’m not missing out on a single canon chapter of this saga! (Or any chapter really) Either way, with stuff like this coming out, SHUT UP AND TAKE MAH MONEYYYYZ!!

RAY PARK
So this was really the first time I got to meet the man behind the Maul. I honestly didn’t know all that much about him (just my fault for not watching more of the featurettes 😛 ), but I absolutely adore him now. He is literally one of the nicest people I’ve ever seen! Watching him pal around with Warwick and teach fans both young and old his moves was fantastic. Gave me some feels when he personally answered the shy little boy’s question, and in the best way :3 And it’s really cool he’s still keeping up with and enjoying Maul’s further misadventures. SWC never fails to remind me that the people behind the magic of Star Wars are as amazing as the saga itself! Plus, the whole thing made me wish I knew some martial arts. Need to work on that…

Honestly there are too many things to talk about. So much talent, so much creativity, so much joy, so much passion… you could see that in everyone there, fan and filmmaker alike. The future of SW is looking so so bright, and I am beyond thrilled to see what comes next ❤

And don't worry. If I didn't cover something here, I'll likely talk about it in future posts. Can't wait 'til the next big reason to celebrate!

Keep The Peace,

Following The Freemakers: A Hero Discovered

OK so wow I am absolutely ecstatic to be writing this right now. This show… gah I’m in love with it! I regret I didn’t talk about it more beforehand so before we talk about the episode itself I’m gonna talk about the journey to it. It’s surreal to think it was nearly five years ago when The Padawan Menace debuted and whisked me away to a world where Bib Fortuna sang on a Star Wars version of Idol and Grievous and Anakin posed for photos. A version of the SW galaxy that made time for fun but never neglected the heart. It led me to becoming the Lego fan I am today, and heightened my then-growing love of Star Wars. And every year since we’ve had great adventures from every angle of the saga. So the instant I heard they were doing a little series called The Freemaker Adventures… I exploded with joy. The concept of a real family unexpectedly caught up in the midst of something bigger is so very Star Wars, and so very perfect. And with a full-on series instead of a single special or a miniseries offered up new opportunities for expanded storytelling and major major feels. And it took place between Episodes V and VI so that offered a whole new world of possibilities and things not yet seen! I was so excited for this I decided to keep everything a surprise, which unfortunately made it hard for me to blog about it beforehand. But regardless, it was a thrilling journey and now I’m here to talk about on a (mostly) weekly basis in my new column, Following The Freemakers! So I’m gonna take a metaphorical breath and then we’ll get started.
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode IV, Episode V, and Freemakers episode A Hero Discovered

The Death Star II was quite the battle station weren’t it? Though it served the Empire pretty well in the Battle of Endor, it wasn’t a fan-favorite in the beginning. At least, not with Emperor Palpatine, who has a lot of fun rubbing his apprentice’s previous failure in his helmeted face. Sidious is convinced a backup plan is needed. (Also: “Dooku always had a backup plan” “WHAT WAS THAT?” XD ) Though he’s completely not being given the benefit of the doubt, Vader happens to be working on such. He has eyes all over the galaxy looking for one thing — an ancient weapon known as the Kyber Saber. Something that Palpatine desires… ferventlyAND THEN OMGOSH THAT OPENING MUSIC WHAAAT IT’S AMAZINGGG!! Sorry but it is.
On the other side of the galaxy, we catch the Rebels and Imperials in the midst of their daily grind — space battles. X-Wings and TIEs are flyin’ everywhere! Blasterfire coming from every angle! I certainly wouldn’t want to get caught in their path… so what’s this civilian ship doing darting through the crossfire? What could possibly be so important they’d risk life and limb in a space battle for it? Well, these are the Freemakers, and this is their “daily grind”. Three young scavengers just makin’ sure none of these blasted-apart ships go to waste. Despite any parts are good parts, middle child Zander has his doubts about the plan. Oldest child (and clearly the bosslady on this ship) Kordi believes there’s no better way to get fresh parts to pay their rent than by sneaking into a battle. And young, sweet Rowan just wants to blow stuff up, but the sibs aren’t having it. Buuuut the minute he hears the word “blast”… Ro takes that as an opportunity and COMPLETELY INCINERATES THE IMPERIAL COMMANDSHIP. The Freemakers lightspeed the heck outta there before any of the Rebs and Imps could find out. And at this point I think we all absolutely love these kids. I know I do 🙂
“…Salvaging for parts during a battle was a bad idea anyway.” “I JUST SAID THAT.” “Oh… did you?” XD Even when Kordi’s not winning, she still manages to win anyway. I want to be like her. Anywayy so our crew was heading home to The Wheel, which is a super-awesome concept and, if I’m not mistaken, was pulled from Legends literature. Good place to fix up stuff and sell it… if, of course, you can afford Furlac’s rental prices. Which atm is a slight problem for the Freemakers. Their landlord gives them one final day to pay up before he “throws ’em out the airlock”. Wait… maybe that would be spacelord, since they’re not on land? Or maybe spacestationlord? Hmm interesting thought. Though yeesh I hope he was just speaking figuratively. So now’s the time for the family to get some creative juices flowing and make something worth the credits. Taking broken parts and making it into something new? Sounds amazing! I can’t imagine what it’d take to do it with real ships, but Lego pieces I could work with. Can’t wait for some new sets to come out! Rowan’d like to help, but Zander and Kordi don’t think he’s really… cut out for it. They hardly have to say anything further because in about two seconds Ro is distracted by a pile of random parts. Unfortunatelyyyy random parts may have triggered a chain reaction that ended up blowing up their newest creation. Oh, Rowan… you’re so adorable I can’t be mad at ya 🙂 Any hope for getting that sweet cash now rests in the hands of Zander’s personal creation, the Z-Wing. Hehe I love his passion… I feel similarly about my own art. But it still needs one Clone Wars-era part for the job, so they turn to their personal expert on all things Clone Wars slash housekeeping, R0-GR. Their stitched-together old battle droid seems annoyed to be interrupted from his baking duties. Though yeah good question… they can afford cookies but they can’t afford the rent… hmm. Of course, they might literally be made of sand and really cheap to make, but I’m hoping “sweet sand cookies” are more of a shortbread thing. You know it’s amazing that actually sounds like it belongs in Star Wars. I want one now. OK sorry, also eeeeeeeee Roger is fantastic! Though this is not the first time we’ve seen a redeemed battle droid in Lego SW, it feels the most believable, the most real. This sarcastic, panicky, persnickety, voice-of-reason unit just lights up every scene he’s in. And just the fact that the great Matthew Wood still plays him makes it all the more perfect.
Yet another “anywayyyy”, rather hesitantly, Roger leads them to the site of one of the nastiest Clone Wars skirmishes in hopes they’ll find that final part. Rowan was supposed to stay on the ship, but I kinda figured he wouldn’t be doing that. But at least he had good intentions. He saw stormtroopers and he had no choice but to let his sibs know about it. Roger didn’t approve though, but I don’t think he approves of a lot of things. Though you gotta admire his dedication to his job… he not only follows Rowan through the jungle every perilous step of the way, but he holds onto his mop the whole time! Also… that ‘trooper covered in giant Lego ladybugs? I died laughing at that image XD It’s a pretty cool planet. I’m sorry I don’t remember its name but I guarantee you it’ll come to me at like five in the morning when I stir from slumber. Whee random thoughts. But as Ro continued on… he felt something… this… inexplicable… call… and that call leads the boy and the droid down a hole, and then, to a pedestal where rests one magnificent-looking weapon. And thennnn a DIANOGA!! Yikes they’re a lot scarier when they’re out of water than when they’re in it! The mop came in handy for like two seconds before it was no longer handy. Rowan and Roger’re definitely in trouble. And then… in a blur of blue and silver, a figure leaps from the shadows. With a majestic blade of blue light and the Force clearly on her side, the dianoga limps back to the darkness it came from, and the boy and the droid are saved. But no time to think about who saved ya Ro just wants the shiny thing! Haha XD The one holding that “shiny thing” would be Naare, a real honest-to-goodness Jedi who looks like she might be half-human half-togruta but even I’m not sure. And yes I’m saying this as if you didn’t already know how this ends. More fun to write that way. Rowan doesn’t really even know what a Jedi is, let alone this laser sword-looking-thing that called to him. Naare has the answers. The weapon that called to him is the Kyber Saber, the very very very first and I do mean first lightsaber, fashioned from a blade of kyber crystals. It could enhance ones’ use of the Force one-thousandthfold, but it was also capable of incredible destruction, and was ultimately dismantled and its pieces hidden throughout the galaxy. Don’t know how much Rowan got from the story tho since he seemed content to just play with the saber at the end of it. Gotta say, Naare has a pretty miraculous level of patience with him. She attempts to explain the massive responsibility and burden that comes with it, as Palpatine would do anything to get his clawhands on it. But then Rowan’s attention span turns to something else — the stormtroopers! And Kordi and Zander! O.O ‘Cause yeah while they were gone, Kordi and Zander were caught accidentally dismantling a troop transport, and it seemed not even Kordi’s quick wit and fierce moves could get ’em out of this one. Also another random note but I love the fact that Kordi’s ID signature is in cursive aurebesh XD I’ve experimented a bit with cursive aurebesh before so it was cool they decided to make it at least semi-canon if not canon-canon 🙂 But yeah this could be bad… but this time ’round it’s Rowan who’s got the plan.
“…but since we are Imperial taxpayers that technically does makes it our transport.” KORDI FREEMAKER IS BOSSLADY. And suddenly in stomped an old rusty AT-TE with Rowan at the controls! Followed by Roger at the helm of an ST-AP, the Imperials are sure gone in a hurry. But when the tank falls apart, Naare fiercely comes to Rowan’s aid with her lightsaber goin’ at anything the Imps could throw at her! When the last grey-suit is K.O’d. Rowan looks at Naare with all the respect in the universe, and Naare looks at him with the pride of a master. Oh sweet, sweet Rowan… I absolutely adore him. He’s a kid in every sense of the word! Innocent, enthusiastic, incredibly trusting and loyal to the core. He can be naive and clumsy and easily distracted, but he’s got the biggest heart and has a infectious amount of spirit and doesn’t have a jaded bone in his body. I so much want to see where he goes, who he becomes, the Jedi he might become… *flails about fangirling*
Well I don’t think that made a lick of sense. I hope I made my point. Expect more fangirlings of the sort in the future. After some brief introductions, it looks like Naare’ll be heading back with the Star Scavenger crew. Zander seems quite happy about that. Haha love me some crushes XD So the current goal now is to locate the remaining kybers to keep them out of the Emperor’s possession, and Rowan’ll be able to help with finding them with a little further training from Naare. “That was a lot of words, and I might’ve wandered in the middle, but I think you’re saying… I’m gonna be a JEDI!” Again, love this presh cinnamon roll… X3 Zander has some hesitations on the matter, and Kordi has even more hesitations, but Naare assures them she’ll keep him safe. And then AHHH IT’S FURLAC! But any problems they had with him are mind-tricked away thanks to their new ally. She even gets her own place in The Wheel while she’s at it! I don’t know how much one credit’s worth exactly but it sounded like she really got a bargain there. #JediWin Also Zander getting mind-tricked. That was great XD
As Rowan helps his new master get settled in her new place, Naare reminds him to make certain he keeps this whole thing a solid secret. After all, in this day and age, when friends make deals with Sith Lords and people only tell truth from a certain point of view, who can you trust? And then… in the dark of her rental, DARTH VADER COMES ON THE LINE. And he addresses her as AGENT NAARE. I was so. shocked. I can’t. I loved the idea of her character from the get-go, a female Jedi master and survivor of Order 66! And potentially a cross-species which we don’t see a lot in SW but that’s just cool to me I guess. And seeing her throughout this I really really genuinely loved her character. She was a great master for Rowan and had a great rapport going with him! I was even already on board the Zander-Naare shipping train! So when she flicked on that red blade and said “…then I’ll use another form of persuasion…”, my jaw utterly hit the floor. If there’s a redeemable side of Naare, I sure can’t find it. Not after that. And of course, the addition of the Sith eyes and the more zabrak-looking markings and the fact alone that she is confidently working for the Empire and clearly not under any duress. The fact she doesn’t have any issue with killing an innocent to get what she wants… yikes. I still love her as a villain but OMG SHE IS A MONSTER. And only time will tell where all this ends… dude I can say without any doubt that this was the most shocking turncoat situation I have ever seen in all Star Wars ever. At least, if not the most, it’s definitely one of the most. By the time the credits started rolling, I was overwhelmed by feelings of both absolute love and absolute terror. SW always keeps ya guessing, and that’s one of my many favorite things about it 😀
So like whoa what a pilot! I’m beyond excited to see what happens next in this next glorious chapter of the Lego Star Wars universe! We’ll continue following the Freemakers next week!

Lego Star Wars: The Excitement Is Building

While I haven’t blogged in a week, it doesn’t mean that I’ve been any less SW-hyped. And boy, do I have a lot to blog about in the world of Star Wars right now! But for today, I’m going to talk Lego Star Wars! Because there’s some very very exciting news in this area of SW…
Note: Contains spoilers from The Padawan Menace
So, you may be wondering, “Gee, Twilight; you always yammer on about Lego SW, but do you have any Lego SW sets?” I am rather embarrassed to say that I don’t have any sets 😦 But hear me out! As I’ve said, the majority of my SW stuff was once my brother’s, and while he had a bazillion Lego SW sets, all of the pieces are jumbled together in a big bag, and where the instructions are, I have no idea. The only thing I think that counts as something I own is a Jabba The Hutt Minifigure that I have yet to find… I’m not exactly Jabba’s biggest fan or anything, but there’s something hilarious to me about calling him a “mini”-figure XD (And Lego made him pretty darn cute, too! For a Hutt, anyway) Though I can say that I remember, long before my obsession with SW, putting together Artoo and Threepio and their escape pod. So I can say that I have played with Legos.
Anyway, I have to say that my favorite thing about Lego Star Wars has to be the lightheartedness and humor of their specials, shorts, and videogames. Since seeing The Padawan Menace, I’ve always had an affinity for the clever, well-made, and entertaining world of Lego SW media. I’ve rarely seen in-jokes, pop culture references, and the weaving together of the SW Universe in unconvential ways done so awesomely! Lego just does it right! Even when things happen that don’t make sense in the actual continuity of SW (Ever wanted to see Anakin and Grievous duel face-to-face?? The Padawan Menace! Besides, it could’ve happened… not that Anakin or Grievous would remember any of it…).
So these past few years, they’ve given us the many Lego SW games (Gotta get my hands on the Wii versions of The Complete Saga and The Clone Wars!), the two specials, and a buckload of shorts online. Well, now I’ve found out something pretty astonishing that is indeed the next chapter in the Lego SW Universe…
THE YODA CHRONICLES IS GOING TO BE A THREE-PART SERIES!!! O.O
YodaChroniclesPic02
I know you’ve probably heard of this by now, but I still can hardly believe it! Not just one half-hour special, but three interconnecting ones! All ’bout Yoda, and the younglings, and Sidious’ new convoluted plan, and an evil clone army, and a new clone named JEK-14, who I can’t wait to meet! Of course, nowwwww I’m a bit worried that by watching those few shorts I’ve now spoiled the first ten minutes of the first part! Hopefully not. I hope that the real special will be more complete altogether, and hopefully bring back some of the more original Clone Wars voice actors. Nothing against the guy they have playing Yoda for the shorts, but I’ve gotten waaaaayyy too used to the Tom Kane Yoda! Though the guy doing Grievous certianly adds a nice random humor that steps away from his normal Matt Wood “I will deal with the Jedi myself!” voice. Of course, whatever they end up doing, I bet it’ll be epic! The first part, The Phantom Clone, will air on Cartoon Network on the 29th. Only two more weeks! Woot!
Until then, I must satisfy my Lego SW cravings by rewatching the shorts and specials. I think it’s worth me posting a little commentary on them, what think? Look for those coming up soon! And no, I didn’t forget about the newest Lego short they put up, but since it isn’t related to the Yoda Chronicles, I’ll just wait to tell you guys about it. So yeah, I keep getting more ideas on what to blog about in the world of SW. Now, the countdown to The Phantom Clone begins…
