The Last Jedi Awards!

All right, first post of the new year! Excitement!!

Episode VIII was great, that’s no question, and it left us with an infinite amount of stuff to discuss. The last couple years I’ve had trouble finding the right time to discuss VII and Rogue One, but this year I took notes soon as I arrived home from the theater! But like say, I still had too many thoughts to make a coherent post out of, so I decided to do a little “awards show” of sorts to celebrate some of my favorite things and pinpoint some of the most intriguing things. I’ll admit I’ve only seen the film once at this point, so I may’ve misremembered some stuff, but I will do my best as I highlight the moments, characters, and events that made The Last Jedi so wonderful!

Contains spoilers from Rebels episode The Holocrons Of Fate, Episode VII, and Episode VIII. Seriously. These are big spoilers.

BEST TIME SPENT GETTING TO FURTHER KNOW A CHARACTER:
POE DAMERON

Episode VII introduced us to Poe Dameron almost right off the bat, and though he only was in a handful of scenes, it was impossible not to love the guy. A talented, fearless pilot with a quick wit and a heart of gold who clearly valued his friends and could easily make new ones. I had no idea we’d get to spend as much time with him in VIII as we did, but I loved it. to. pieces. We got to see a little more edge with him than before as he proved himself a bit more of a “dangerous flyboy” than I’d thought, but all the same it made it clear how much he believed in bringing the fight to the First Order and doing the right thing, even when he was mistaken on a couple matters. And I loved seeing more of his epic piloting skills, watching him take charge in new ways, and laughing my head off as he threw jabs at General Hux XD But what I enjoyed most, perhaps, was seeing him further his new friendships with Finn and Rose. Together they made such a great squad I couldn’t help but want to be friends with ’em! Oh, and can’t forget his best buddyship with BB-8! My favorite line in the film just might be “Finn! Rose! You’re not dead! Where’s my droid?”. Sorry but BB-8 was his BFF first XP I remember after first seeing Force Awakens, misremembering Poe and BB-8’s reunion and thinking the pilot had joyfully hugged his ‘mech upon reuniting, not just kneeling down and patting his dome. This time we actually got something close to a hug and it made me so happy because I would do the same. Hehe I’m so glad Poe and I think alike πŸ™‚ But yes I’m so so glad we got to spend so much time with him this chapter! He’s become even more of a favorite than before!

BEST TIME GETTING TO REUNITE WITH A CHARACTER:
LUKE SKYWALKER

I’ve been waiting to see (and hear) Master Luke for a long time now. Or at least it feels like a long time. You guys know what I’m talking about. I even remember dreaming a while ago that VIII would open somewhat like Phantom Menace, with the master and apprentice on a secret mission. But even with some questions answered with the trailers, there was still so much I didn’t know. So, like you most likely, I found myself holding my breath as Luke took the hilt from Rey…
And then in a matter of seconds, I died laughing. Completely died XD
Luke was truly amazing in this film. So was Mark Hamill. At times he brought a warm familiarity that felt true to the farmboy we met forty years ago (or in my case, ten years ago), and at other times, we saw the scars of misunderstandings and fear and tragedy that opened up a new, intriguing angle on Luke as well as the whole Skywalker saga itself. I loved watching him take on the role of a master, not just because of what his perspective on the Force could offer, but because of the interesting fact he really was hesitant just about the whole time. Something I’ve never quite exactly seen in all the master-apprentice relationships we’ve seen in Star Wars. Sure, a lot of the masters we’ve followed have been uncertain at first, but they usually got past that after a little while and master and apprentice became best friends. Perhaps it was because Luke and Rey didn’t have as much time together as some, but it made for an intriguing situation, especially as Rey found herself walking into things she didn’t understand without much guidance or warning. Yet at the same time, there was still some warmth and fun to it that also felt familiar but unique. Yes, in the course of these precious two-and-a-half hours Luke got me all kinds of nostalgic, got me thinking mile-deep thoughts, got me nodding my head thinking “oh yeah that’s how you do it good sir” as he used the Force, got me laughing out loud, and of course, got me a little weepy. Especially when we said goodbye. But it was not a tragic goodbye, it was a peaceful one, and for that I am thankful. OK I have no clue if anything I wrote the last couple paragraphs made sense, but getting to better know this amazing Jedi, teacher, and brother was far more exciting and wonderful than I could’ve anticipated.

CHARACTER WHO MOST DESERVES AN ANTHOLOGY MOVIE:
MAZ KANATA

Perhaps a bit of a controversial choice, because there are a lot of characters who could use one (or two, or a trilogy…). But in the few minutes we spent with the Pirate Queen, we got a taste of some serious adventure that I definitely want to see more of. Yeah I wasn’t totally sure we’d see her in the film at all, so I’m happy either way whether Maz gets her own movie or not πŸ™‚ *Cough* at least let’s get a novel ok?

BEST TIME GETTING TO KNOW A NEW CHARACTER:
ROSE TICO

I already had a feeling Rose was gonna be great just from how wonderful Kelly Marie Tran was at Celebration Orlando. Once again, could not have predicted just how great. She made the favorite character list pretty quickly, especially as she went from playing the fangirl to giving Finn a good zapping XD I love her spunk and drive but also how much she cares for her friends and family and doing the right thing. She’s definitely one of the most relatable SW characters to me, which is probably why I came out as her on the starwars.com personality quiz. And at the same time she has a lot of admirable qualities that I could only hope to possess. She just fits so so well into the SW universe and brought some serious sunshine to the dark times. It’s impossible not to adore her! Alsooooo she and Finn are kinda cute together I’ll admit… :3

BEST SURPRISE GUEST:
YODA

After seeing VII, I started to come up with little stories about the Force ghost crew visiting Luke on Ach-To (and usually driving him nuts XP). But I never expected to actually see one of these great Jedi in the next chapter. So when I saw those pointy ears… I let loose a whisper-squee-scream of pure happiness that probably would’ve been much louder if I wasn’t well-aware of all the people in the theater I’d disturb doing so. Yoda was so perfect and hilarious and just the right amount of not-too-serious-but-still-so-ridiculously-wise-and-epically-powerful! And I had no idea just what Jedi are capable of after they take on immortality. I mean, wow! And having rewatched V and VI only a few days before, seeing Luke and Yoda together again in this time was too amazing and threw nostalgia feels all over me. I’m amazed Lucasfilm managed to keep this a secret, but it was just about the best reveal ever πŸ˜€ “Page turners they are not”, but always a delight, Yoda is!

BEST NEW CREATURE (ASIDE FROM PORGS):
FATHIERS

Perhaps the other best-kept secret in the film was these amazing giraffe-llama-rabbit-horses. These graceful, sweet-natured giants stole my heart pretty quickly, and watching Rose and Finn set ’em free got me all gooey inside. Sooo can we get some of these in another film or show? At least maybe The Freemaker Adventures? ‘Cause I need more fathiers. Second place goes to the vulptices but only because they’re not in the film quite as much but I love them the same anyway.

BIGGEST “OMGWHAT” MOMENT:
LEIA’S CLOSE CALL

Every Star Wars story has that one moment you can’t forget your reaction. Sometimes it’s a reaction of joy, sometimes it’s a moment of sadness… this one was a moment of complete shock. The moment in the trailer between Kylo and Leia itself was terrifying enough. AND THEN they pull the rug out from under you, and you watch as a different TIE takes the shot… my jaw was on the floor and all I could think was “Nonononono did that just happen?! This can’t be the way General Organa goes!”. And I probably missed some other important dialogue in-between because those two thoughts were on repeat in my head. I don’t think any of us are truly ever ready to say goodbye to a character in SW, but I really really wasn’t ready for Leia to go. I was so completely relieved that wasn’t how she was gonna go. Watching her use the Force so masterfully was all at once amazing and surreal and “WHOA”. And it’s especially intriguing because even though we’ve seen Kanan do something similar in The Holocrons Of Fate, the stakes were even higher for Leia here. So it begs the question if the situation demanded a stronger knowledge of the Force to perform, or if it’s just something the Chosen One’s children naturally possess. There are a lot of questions here, but that’s one thing I love so much about this movie: it says to us fans “Oh so you think you know everything there is to know about the Force? Well guess what? YOU DON’T!” and that is a-ok with me. So yeah I was thankful I could breathe again… at least for a little while before the next OMGWHAT moment. And this chapter of the saga had a lot of those…

COOLEST NEW CRAFT:
SKI SPEEDERS

I’ve loved these things from day one and that’s a fact. They’re so quintessentially Star Wars-y yet so unique and quirky and fast and I really just couldn’t help but adore them. OK so maybe Poe and I don’t always think alike, but I want to take a spin on one of these oldies all the same πŸ™‚

COOLEST NEW WORLD:
ALL OF THE ABOVE

Seriously, I can’t pick one. Every SW film promises new incredible, exciting places to see, and Last Jedi supremely delivered. The amazing picturesque natural beauty of Ach-To! The rough, surreal-but-magnificent white-and-red landscape of Crait! Even the less-than-reputable world of Canto Bight captured my attention with its eclectic Mos Eisley Cantina-style cast of characters and all that cray amount of glitz and glam. Each world served the story perfectly and was as interesting as they were eye-catching and make me want to come back, even though I know IX will surely bring a lot of exciting new places of its own…

And that’s just scratching the surface of things that have consumed my mind the last three weeks, and hopefully we’ll find time to discuss further stuff another day. But OMG yes I love this chapter of the saga so so much. I love the camaraderie, the teamwork, the unsolved mysteries, the unexpected twists, the one-liners, everything BB-8 does, the way it blows my mind, the way it shook me to my core, that wonderful Star Wars feel, and the wonderfully hopeful ending that caps it off better than I could’ve hoped. IX seems so so far away now… but I’m glad there’s still so much Star Wars to come until then :3

Following The Freemakers: Return Of The Return Of The Jedi

OH WOW you guys this episode! There are no words! Well hopefully they’ll be a few words or this won’t be much of a post… ha ha. Yeah let’s see if I can go ahead and get my thoughts together on all that was awesome and epic and intriguing about the season two finale, Return Of The Return Of The Jedi!

Contains spoilers from Episode VI, Freemakers episode Return Of The Return Of The Jedi, and many episodes from this past season and the last.

The wreckage from the last episode is just devastating guys. Devastating. There’s no other word that works better. Roger looking sad as he held that piece with the Freemaker insignia on it… they were some tears welling up for me. But even amidst the smoke and shattered pieces, Rowan still finds hope… and a new creative vision. I thought I’d be waiting for another season to see a new StarScavenger, but instead Rowan has pieced together a magnificent mash-up I’m going to call the StarArrow! Or maybe it could be the Phoenix Rising, or the Shantipole Shooting Star, or Out Of The Ashes, or just the HeadScavenger! (which actually kind of works weirdly enough) I’ll just let Lego do the naming I guess. But it’s amazing how two vastly different ships — one compact and strong and built for scavenging, and the other sleek and powerful and built for war — could make such a complimentary combination! Zander has full right to fanboy ’cause I definitely agree. I just do hope when I get the kits one of them will have instructions on combining the two… sadly as much as I love Legos I’m not great at building stuff without a manual yet. But that’s another story.

And oh, I’m just so so so amazed how well they orchestrated this episode, watching the Freemakers’ own battles occurring seamlessly alongside the events of Return Of The Jedi! It’s more than I ever could’ve asked for or hoped. As I’ve said before, I’d assumed the show would end before the film’s events, but I’m so glad they did things differently. I love the former Lego SW specials and shorts and miniseries, but man… what they’re doing with TFA is just so immensely incredible. The way they keep to the canon as smoothly as they do, the quality of storytelling, the real danger, the real emotion… I hope this remains a staple of Lego Star Wars forever, even at whatever point in the future this beautiful series says “goodbye” :3
Whoops I really rabbit-trailed there. This is what happens when you love a show and though you know they only called it the season finale they don’t say anything about whether the series has been renewed or not and you may not know for months what becomes of it.

What I was intending to talk about last paragraph was Palpatine’s “best day ever”. It’s so interesting to realize that Sidious had other things he was doing that day, other things going on than just him sitting in his throne, preparing to make a chilling reveal to the son of Skywalker. He’s still the Emperor! Still has places to go, things to do, Rebels to crush, weapons of mass destruction to wield! The guy had no reason in the universe to think today’d be the day his apprentice turned on him and sent him sprawling into Death Star II’s energy core. For pretty much the first time ever, I’ve really started to wonder a bit about all of Sheev Palpatine’s story we don’t know, how he got from decent human being to the ultimate evil. It’s almost as though seeing him so blissfully unaware of all that was about to go down has made me see him slightly more as a human being. Weird. Need some canon answers on this now.

And we can’t forget the return of the return of the Kyber Saber! What a truly awesome twist! After all the Saber put them through last season, now it’s the one thing that evens the odds and could save them all. Love when stuff like that comes full circle! It’s nice to put aside the weapon’s destructive past and see it as the force of light it was always intended to be. I’m *sigh* gonna miss it, but it was the right way to go for sure.

So never in a billion years did I see coming who that Death Star operator was. Safe to say you didn’t either. In the space of those few minutes after we watched said operator take a look back at our heroes, I ran through every character we’ve seen in the series (and a few we haven’t) and how they might possibly make sense and be here right now. I think I did consider Luke for a second because there was the thought that maybe he was on his way back to Endor at this point. Once I knew it was a she I considered Maynar briefly but that made even less sense since clearly the operator was a human. I think I might’ve briefly briefly thought maybe it was Sabine even (and seriously that would’ve been so cool!). But nope.
IT WAS BECKY. SMOOCHENBACHER. OMG WHAT.
I haven’t been this shocked since I watched Kylo Ren offer his hand to Rey in the Episode VIII trailer. But this was a slightly better kind of shock because it was followed up by me guffawing loudly. Zander’s reaction is still the best thing I’ve seen all week XD And crazily enough this all does make sense. Like I’ve theorized before, Becky was a customer of theirs when she inadvertently damaged her parents’ expensive spacecraft. Zander and Becky only caught the smallest glimpse of each other, unbeknownst either knew they existed. But he got her name on the financial records, and she got his name on their business card… and that was enough. Then I’m betting her parents sent her to the Imperial Academy after they found out about her joyride, and here we are. So all this time Zander had a crush on a girl who was as much a hopeless romantic as he is. How perfect is that?! They barely know each other and yet it’s like they’ve known each other forever! Well, I guess that’s a tendency with teenage love, but I’m all on board the Zanecky train anyway ❀ OK glad I got that all out I've been fangirling over this all week.

Anyway, WHAT A CLIMAX! I'm sure I've already said this before elsewhere, but it adds so much depth when you find see how many other stories surround the stories we already know. It's one of the things I've loved most about all these new SW stories lately. To think that smack in the middle of the battle of Endor, there was a whole other dramatic confrontation going down right on the Death Star's core! I was assuming that a weapon as powerful as the Kyber Saber would make dust out of M-OC instantly. But I'd forgotten he'd be fighting kyber with kyber. And of the two the droid has the bigger, more powerful one. You know what I'd said last finale on the Saber, and how because of its size it's like putting together several thousand normal-sized already-powerful crystals together until they reach several feet in length equaling a massive mind-blowing amount of power? Well now it occurred to me how many more crystals the Arrowhead‘s former core was comprised of. It’s probably… IDK four times that? Gosh I’m really really really glad Palpatine never got that ship now. If a Forcewielder holding the Saber could tear apart moons… what do you think a Forcewielder flying the Arrowhead could’ve done? Probably could tear right into hyperspace! And probably worse things! True, the crystal in the Arrowhead functioned primarily as a shield, but it did aid the embersteel blade so… I think my theory’s right. So yeah M-OC was a terrifying force in every way possible… but when his “perfect” logic fails his core directive, Ro takes the shot and finally, finally wins.
But he only ultimately wins because his so-called “weakness”, his family, wouldn’t go anywhere without him πŸ™‚

And so we follow with the ultimate in happy endings, the ewok party! It’s one of my forever favorite scenes in the Skywalker saga (’cause you know I’m a softie like that), and it just got even sweeter as we get to watch the Freemakers join in :3 Also bonus Hera and Chopper are out there gettin’ down! Thanks to them I spent a lot of this scene looking for other familiar SWR faces even though I know they’re not going to go and spoil something like that, but it’s still fun looking. And I definitely need an episode in the future with all our favorite Rebel droids on an adventure of some sort (would love to know what Threepio would say to that! I get the feeling Artoo already doesn’t approve XP). But perhaps the best new moment I saw at the celebration? Watching Rowan finally show Luke the power he’s had all along.
Not to totally throw cheese all over the post, but… it’s more of a happy new beginning than a happy ending πŸ˜€

See what I mean? SO MUCH WOW! I hardly know how to fully express how happy this show makes me right now, seriously. So have a bunch of emojis!
πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜„πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜€πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜€πŸ˜πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ€“πŸ€“πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ’–πŸ’œπŸ’™πŸŽ†πŸŽ‡πŸ™ŒπŸŽ†πŸŽ‡
I will see you tomorrow to talk Rebels, and more Star Wars in general in the weeks to come!

Following The Freemakers: Escape From Coruscant

Things continue to get unbelievably real on The Freemaker Adventures, and that’s why I’m here once again spilling out all my thoughts and queries and theories and fangirly musings. Read on as we dissect some intriguing (and often nerve-wracking) stuff from Escape From Coruscant!

Contains spoilers from Episode III, Episode V, Episode VI, Episode VII, Tarkin, TCW episode The Lawless, Rebels episodes Rebel Resolve, The Siege Of Lothal, and The Holocrons Of Fate, and Freemakers episodes Duel Of Destiny, Return Of The Kyber Saber, A Perilous Rescue, and Escape From Coruscant.

First of all, don’t worry Imperial Guards, I still think you’re cooler than whatever Palpatine thinks πŸ™‚ It’s so funny… I remember early on in my SW fandom not being all that impressed with all those quiet armored characters 99% of fans are obsessed with — the Fetts, stormtroopers, Imperial Guards, etc. They were everywhere and yet they weren’t as interesting to me as the Jedi and Rebels. But now I’m among those 99% and think they’re all fantastic and interesting, and I’ve become a huge huge red guard fangirl over the last year-and-a-half thanks to Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy revealing the full grandeur of their spectacular design (not to mention some funny appearances in other Lego SW stories). So yeah #RedGuardsRule! Ooh maybe the next Star Wars animated series should center around a former guard and his/her journey after the Empire’s fall! A thought anyway.

But my random series ideas are not nearly as important as the fact that Rowan is in possibly the most dangerous place in the galaxy right now — on the Empire’s capital with Darth Sidious in front of him and Darth Vader behind him. The youngest Freemaker is bold, sounding both incredulous and amused at the fact the Emperor was after the long-since-destroyed Kyber Saber all this time. But oh my goodness… I spent this episode completely on edge. We’re only talking about the man who played the Republic like a card, rose to ultimate power, and destroyed almost all the Jedi with a single command. Not to mention the guy’s apprentice, who could survive being crushed by an AT-ST and can use the Force to literally crush one’s heart from the inside (I’m serious go read Tarkin right now). Safe to say they know how to get what they want from Rowan, a child who, though clever and strong with the Force, still has his weaknesses… *Shudders*
Oh, and right before we got the titles, there’s this great little moment you’ve gotta see. After Palpatine giddily gives himself chills, Rowan turns to Vader with a look that says “Uh is this guy for real??” XD

My heart absolutely broke so hard for Kordi, Zander, and Roger this episode. Their brother seems to have become a casualty of war, a soldier lost that the Alliance can’t afford to bring home. I was reminded quite a bit of SWR’s Rebel Resolve, and the challenges that can come from fighting alongside those you care for. Hera knows every fiber of what these kids and their droid are feeling, but Coruscant is truly the worst place in the galaxy for Rowan to be, because it’s the worst place in the galaxy for the Rebels to be. And now that they know of the second Death Star, the stakes just got much much higher. Though a beautiful, impossibly precious quote, it seems there’s no more painful or difficult question to ask than “What’s the point of saving the galaxy if the people you love aren’t in it?“. I sometimes lay awake at night wrestling with that. Some of my most favorite moments in Star Wars have been when someone breaks all the rules to save a life, but not all of these rebellious rescues end well — in fact, they usually don’t. But I understand. I think it’s safe to say we all understand. If, like Luke, your friends were suffering, if, like Obi-Wan, your lost love called for help, if, like all the Freemakers at one point or another, your sibling or siblings were in pain or in danger… you likely wouldn’t stand still and do nothing. True, there’s value in rules, value in thinking your plan through, I mean, we just talked about this last post with Rowan falling for M-OC’s trap. And true, you have to think of the other lives at stake in many of these situations. This is a hard lesson, and thankfully I think most of us average Joes and Janes won’t have to worry about making a decision this monumental or potentially detrimental. These stories in SW are not telling us that the characters were wrong per se, or that going after someone you care for is wrong. They’re reminding us simply to think and to be wise in any situation. And whether these rescues go well (like in Rebels) or with mixed results, seeing these great, admirable, relatable characters who desire to protect and defend, never cease to inspire. And perhaps a character who makes mistakes but loves people is better than a character who never breaks a rule but doesn’t love. That makes sense, right? I feel like I might’ve lost my place somewhere in there but… anyway. GO FREEMAKER FAM GO! THIS IS A REBELLION, SO YOU GO REBEL! They’re willing to give up their place in the Alliance for Rowan, and that’s nothing but amazing no matter how you spin it. Though you’ve gotta be careful with the decisions you make and the actions you take (sorry Maz didn’t mean to rip you off)… family, ideally, should always come first.

So I had no idea how Rowan would survive this episode. I don’t think I breathed much on this one. At all. Though they’re depicted as minifigs, Sidious and Vader are no less deadly, terrifying threats. And again, knowing the horrible things the Sith are capable of… the odds are really not in Ro’s favor. This episode did remind me though that the Master and Apprentice are capable of other methods of persuasion than just by lightsaber or Force lightning; they’re crafty and calculating, taking their time with getting the information they desire. Perhaps that made it even scarier. OK maybe not quite as much with the “Dark Side And You” presentation. That was too great XD But otherwise… yeah oh man… the probes. Seeing those things always makes my skin crawl. And now they’ve upgraded them with laser prods! The fact Rowan was able to resist them as well as he did is nothing short of amazing. The scariest thing though? Watching Vader use the dark side mind probing trick. I’ve wondered in the past if that was just a thing Kylo Ren and Maul could do. Knowing that Darth Vader can do it makes him all the more frightening. The fear and desperation in Rowan’s voice as he tries to fight the impossible… oh my goodness I can’t. I CAN’T. At the time, I’d been thinking most of the episode that surely Kordi and Zander would get to him before Vader found what he was looking for. Surely they wouldn’t let Ro carry the burden of being the one to tip off the Empire to the location of kyber crystals. Surely!
But… no.
Things don’t go that way.

OK wow things are getting so heavy here, and they’re only going to get heavier. My broken heart was healed a little though as the red guards revealed themselves to be Kordi and Zander. They’ve already been there and done that with stormtrooper disguises; it’s a nice way to mix it up! Watching Rowan tacklehug his big brother just made me explode with smiles, something I needed a good bit this episode. Long as this family’s still standing, there’s hope :3

But who would’ve anticipated that M-OC would come back from the dead? I knew he’d been able to repair himself in the past, but the way Vader tore him apart… I really thought that was how the hunter droid would go down.
I was wrong.
And now he mans the most powerful spacecraft in the galaxy… and his sights are set on a scrappy little TIE fighter with the Freemakers aboard.
We’ve seen what the Arrowhead does to TIEs O_O

It’s quite a twist, an episode titled Escape From Coruscant… and they actually have yet to truly escape. If they escape at all.
I know that they must survive somehow since there are two more episodes left this season, but I’m still absolutely terrified for what will become of our heroes, the Alliance, and the galaxy itself in the events to follow.
All the same though, this series never fails to be incredible.

A Very Fangirly Analysis Of The New Last Jedi Trailer

Anyone else spend the majority of their time online yesterday staring at the Star Wars Youtube channel waiting for the new trailer?
Yeah, so did I. That might’ve been the most agonizing wait in the history of Star Wars. I mean… the last couple years, they debuted the trailers during a certain program so you’d get a general idea of the time, but not this year. My eyes were sore from constantly checking the computer by the time it popped up around 10pm-ish. But oh my land it was so worth the wait. SO SO WORTH IT.
In the tradition of past analyses, I will give you my personal (almost) second-by-second breakdown of my thoughts and theories. Now, let’s watch it again!

Contains some spoilers from Episode VII and some of the other films before it.

0:00 – From the first shot onward, my jaw dropped, and my mouth refused to close again until the trailer’s end.
0:01 – It’s Kylo Ren, and he’s got something heavy on his mind, it seems.
0:02 – It took me a second viewing to realize he was overlooking a factory. The wavery watery look of the glass made me first think it was an aquarium of some sort, or maybe an aquatic opera like Palpatine used to enjoy.
0:04 – Snoke still has one of the scariest voices of all time. Without a shadow of doubt. He got me so intrigued. Seriously, how did a nice kid like Ben end up with a dark master like this guy?
0:06 – AHHHHHH THESE WALKERS THAT I CAN’T REMEMBER THE NAME OF!! THEY ARE MAGNIFICENT! AND TERRIFYING!
0:08 – What you mean by “war” exactly? That he was conflicted, that he was a strong fighter, or a little of both? Y’know OMG I just wondered if maybe the whole narration is a ruse, and it sounds like Snoke is talking to Kylo but maybe it’s some point that he’s talking to Rey? Might be off but with Star Wars you’ve gotta look at it from all angles.
0:11 – Such a dynamic image wow. And hmm look at those streaks of red on the floor! There’s a lot of red in this trailer and I can’t help but wonder what it all means…
0:15 – See look! There’s red on the walls here! It’s visually appealing, but you guys know in SW, nothing is there just for looks.
0:17 – I’m still trying to figure out if this is a new lightsaber or not. Unless my memory’s failed me I’m pretty sure he lost it in the duel on Starkiller Base. So… did he just get it repaired or did he find another one that looks exactly like it? Whatever the case I’m glad; it’s so awesomely iconic I can’t imagine Ren wielding anything else.
0:22 – Andy Serkis be givin’ me chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiills here. How does he do it??
0:23 – But then we cut over to Rey! Wonder why exactly? Oh that Skywalker ‘saber is still so cool though…
0:25 – Also wow are those skies blue. I need a ticket to the place they filmed Ach-To asap.
0:29 – The Lucasfilm logo will always strike me with the thought: “HOLD ON TO YOUR POTATOES, EPICNESS IS ABOUT THE HAPPEN!”
0:31 – #VacationGoals #ThatWasATotalUnderstatement
0:35 – WE’RE FINALLY SEEING THE MASTER AND APPRENTICE COMING TOGETHER AND I CAN’T GET OVER IT.
0:37 – I hardly know how to put my thoughts into words. So many emotions here.
0:39 – I not only want a vacation on Ach-To, I also want a cape like Rey’s.
0:41 – It’s that mystery place again! Oooh!
0:44 – Every time I see this shot, my eyes widen. It’s a reflex to something that massively beautiful.
0:45 – Rey wielding that lightsaber is so utterly perfect. It’s like she was meant to wield it somehow. Nothing we don’t already know, of course, but I still remember what it was like when the trailers were making it look like Finn’s lightsaber. Seeing her taking it and owning it makes me so proud πŸ™‚
0:48 – Wait did she direct the Force through the ‘saber to the ground?? Or was that just really cool editing?? Either way WHOAAA.
0:49 – Never mind that was apparently just good editing since Rey’s standing in a different spot now.
0:50 – Another one of my favorite shots we’ve seen so far. So completely mind-blowing!
0:53 – Mark Hamill is so so amazing in this. I really really cannot wait to hear and see more of Luke in this new time and place.
0:55 – I assumed this was Luke’s hand but now I’m not so sure…
0:57 – I figured Luke would have some uncertainties with training Rey, but I never thought he’d see some of what was in Ren in her. At least, that’s what I’m assuming he’s talking about. This getting intense.
1:00 – Yeah Luke doesn’t look thrilled. That is the face of “NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE!
1:01 – Also dang are Luke’s eyes blue. Not that I didn’t know this already but the HD is really working nicely here.
1:02 – Rey is like “say wat now?”
1:06 – OH THIS POOR CONFLICTED CHILD…
1:07 – I’m glad to see his face healed up better than I expected it to, though.
1:08 – That boy has one impressive throwing arm.
1:10 – INTENSITY LEVELS RISING.
1:12 – IT’S THE TIE SILENCER OMG!! I’ve jokingly called it the Bat-TIE because it’s sleek shape calls to mind the Batmobile. But this beautiful punisher is definitely no joke with Kylo behind the controls…
1:15 – These visual effects are music to my… eyes. Wait that sentence doesn’t make sense.
1:18 – NOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU WOULDN’T…!
1:19 – THESE SHOTS ABSOLUTELY TERRIFY ME.
1:22 – AND MAKE ME WEEP FOR ALL THIS ONCE-BEAUTIFUL FAMILY HAS LOST.
1:25 – *Curls up into a ball and cries for several minutes*
1:27 – It’s only two months and five days away, but it still feels so far…
1:29 – The Falcon!! And again a whole lot of red. Is it representing the dark side or something else?
1:31 – AHH IT’S CHEWIE!! He’s looking amazinggg!
1:33 – PORGS. ARE. EVERYTHING. MY GOSH.
1:35 – Hey there Poe!
1:36 – Nobody says epic inspiring motivational stuff like Poe Dameron does. BURN IT DOWN, BOY! BURN IT ALLLLLL THE WAY DOWN!!
1:40 – And I’m not sure anybody can make an entrance as epically as Captain Phasma does.
1:41 – Safe to say though that Finn’s not impressed with his former boss.
1:42 – FINN ‘BOUT TO BRING IT! YAAAAAAS!!
1:44 – Not sure what else to say here, just still reeling in the amazingness of it all.
1:45 – NONONONO YOU GOTTA BE OK, BB-8!
1:46 – Luke sounds so intense here wow.
1:47 – Oooh check out these snow cats I want one!
1:49 – Hey there’s Leia! But I’m still unclear what she’s standing there for… and where she’s standing… so many questions! So much uncertainty!
1:50 – Wonder where Rey’s taking this dive?
1:52 – Who’s that she’s facing down?? It goes by so fast I literally don’t know.
1:53 – I can’t help but wonder what Finn’s doing in First Order garb right now. I’m assuming it’s an undercover thing… or maybe an undercover thing that was a complete accident because he wasn’t intending on going undercover but he ended up on a First Order ship and had to think fast. I NEED TO KNOW.
1:55 – OOOh buddy the First Order’s looking sharp… and that’s not good for the Resistance.
1:56 – More red going on over here. I don’t know what the imagery means for sure, but I love imagery in filmmaking nonetheless.
1:57 – I’m definitely glad to know those nifty speeders are the Resistance’s now. They’re so awesome and different I assumed they might belong to some other group of antagonists, but this is much better.
1:59 – IT’S SNOKE! IN THE FLESH! YIKES HE’S STILL SO FRIGHTENING, BUT SO INTRIGUING! Also dang I hope Rey’s gonna be OK..
2:12 – My literal reaction after seeing this: “WHAT?! WAT. WAT. WHAT. WAHT. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT??!” Translation: “What could Rey possibly gain from Ren? What could he gain from her? What. does. this. mean??

One of the many reasons I love Star Wars is because of how it balances dark and light, simultaneously making me go from joy to excitement to fear to sadness and back around again. Star Wars truly makes me experience all emotions, even in the period of a two-minute trailer. I also love the way they portray heroes and villains and how they’re not always all dark or all light. Though it’s left me with endless questions, I love that last image of a conflicted villain holding out his hand to a perhaps equally-conflicted hero. I knew this trailer would be amazing, I just couldn’t grasp or imagine how much more so it would be. It’s left me utterly astounded in the best way possible.

Again, so worth the wait. Now… we just have to wait a little tiny bit longer…

Following The Freemakers: A Perilous Rescue

OK so I know I say this a lot on this blog, especially on the topic of The Freemaker Adventures, but… THINGS ARE GETTING SO REAL RIGHT NOW OMYGOSH. I can only hope I can get all my thoughts out in a coherent way because I still haven’t processed all that went down in this one. Either way this ought to be an interesting post. Read on, Freemaker fam!

Contains spoilers from Episode V, The Empire Strikes Out, TCW episode The Lawless, Rebels episodes Rise Of The Old Masters and Twin Suns, and Freemakers episodes The Lost Crystals Of Qalydon, Flight Of The Arrowhead, and A Perilous Rescue.

So I’ve told you guys before that I got Kordi in a TFA personality quiz and, even though I know we have things in common, I still felt like she was more of the character I’d like to be than the character I feel I am (which would probably be Rowan). But soon as she started rambling excitedly in front of the Rebellion’s big shots, I finally truly truly saw myself in her and exclaimed β€œOMG that is so me!” Talking really really fast, forgetting to breathe except in squees, realizing I said something that I feel came out sounding dumb even if it’s true, and then trying to overexplain myself which ends up sounding dumb all over again. I’ve literally done it all. All Star Wars characters have something I can relate to, but it’s really fun and really special when a character shares something this specific in common with you πŸ™‚ Random way to start the blog, perhaps, but something I really needed to say before anything else.

Anyway, it’s so wonderful watching Kordi and Zander begin a new chapter with the Rebellion, in an even bigger way than when they first got here. I was so thrilled to hear Kordi addressed as β€œcommander” as she joins the ranks of Rebel bossladies before her! And Zander is finally able to show Blue Squadron what he’s capable of as the Arrowhead makes quick work of an Imperial fleet. I’m even prouderer than I was at that medal ceremony! But for Rowan, his new title’s brought him back to square one — a place where he’s unsure of what he can do for the Alliance. Poor child. I don’t think Ro’s had an uneventful day since he first heeded the Kyber Saber’s call, so I could understand why it’d be a challenge to slow down. Wonder if he has any hobbies from before all of this. After all, he’s a master builder now, but he wasn’t always. Well if you recall back on the pilot Kordi commented on him having a great singing voice, so maybe he should take up karaoke! But that’s a moot point right now. I can see why Jedi are better off not craving adventure and excitement, because sometimes when you go off looking for such things, you get something far more dangerous than you bargained for…

On that note, I was thinking a lot today about the fact that Rowan is figuring out all this Jedi stuff on his own, that he has no master who could’ve reminded him not to seek adventure, not make rash decisions with no plan, and not let emotions cloud his judgement. Now true Luke had two masters teaching him and they couldn’t keep him from making a decision with mixed results, but you’ve gotta wonder a little. What would it be like for this masterless padawan to have had a real master the whole time? Or to even have had a master right now? Would it have made a difference? How would it have influenced him? Rowan is in such a unique position compared to other Jedi we’ve seen, learning much from his family and his wild adventures that I’m not sure a Jedi master could teach. As a whole I don’t think Ro has suffered being masterless, but as you watch him do stuff that would’ve gotten him kicked out of the Order back in the day, it’s easy to wonder if a wise voice (that wasn’t from a well-meaning-but-easily-destroyed battle droid) would have kept Rowan from attempting this perilous rescue. Again, it’s all a moot point now, but the what-ifs can be interesting to ponder on. I hope I got my point across, that was a lot all at once.

So Vader and M-OC make quite the dream team, don’t they? πŸ˜› I’ve always loved what they did with The Empire Strikes Out with the concept of Sith-y sibling rivalry, and since the special’s not even close to canon now (RIP Maul), I’m quite happy they gave me something in a similar vein here that’s both funny and honestly believable. Yep the boys are Palpatine’s pride and joy!
Exceptthathehasnoproblemkillingthembutwhatever.

Y’know it’s interesting… I’ve been analyzing Star Wars thoroughly for six years now, and it still keeps keeping me guessing. Every time I think I know what’s going to happen next, I miss the mark like a stormtrooper in the dark! I really bought Maynar’s transmission at first. I think I was just so happy to get an opportunity to see her and Rowan on an exciting mission again, that I didn’t quite consider that maybe this wasn’t the direction the story was heading. As the episode went on, I started to think that this had something to do with Vader or M-OC. Once they landed, I began to wonder if maybe this was a trap in the vein of TCW’s The Lawless or SWR’s Rise Of The Old Masters. But for all the pieces I put together, I couldn’tve predicted in a million years that M-OC was the holo of Maynar all along. *Shudders* that reveal will never cease to terrify me. I’m glad this didn’t take the same kind of dark turn the aforementioned episodes did, but… it still took a really dark turn. You have Rowan alone up against M-OC in a dark, locked-down Imperial transport. It’s basically what nightmares are made of. Rowan puts up an amazing fight with the crafty hunter droid, but it’s Darth Vader who wins the battle. He dismembers Sidious’s creation in no time at all, he downs the boy in one swift move, and his dark master’s quest seems to be fulfilled at last. In case anybody forgot who the real most-terrifying force in the galaxy is… you won’t forget again. You can fix up a droid with all the weapons you want, but it’ll never be as efficient and deadly as Lord Vader. Such a cool, unexpected twist! BUT STILL SO TERRIFYING.
The very thing I’ve feared could happen this whole series has happened.
The last of the Forcebuilders is about to be at the mercy of the most evil, powerful man in the galaxy.

Anyone else still in shock? OK technically you might’ve already finished the season at this point but still! There are no words. Just can’t wait until I see what happens next on this amazing amazing show.
