Rebel Transmissions: The Wynkahthu Job

Finally, the Rebel Transmissions are back! Now that the holidays and head colds have passed, I can finally return to my Rebel writing with this week’s commentary on the wonderful episode The Wynkahthu Job. Read on.
NOTE: Contains spoilers from TCW episodes The Gungan General and “The Gathering” Arc, Rebels episodes Idiot’s Array, Brothers Of The Broken Horn, Steps Into Shadow, and The Wynkahthu Job

It’s time again for another Hondo job! Bring on that #OhnakaFever! It seems though that Ezra’s the only one smiling when the witty weequay walks in. Seems the rest of the crew’s a little sore after the whole skipping-town-with-the-ugnaughts-while-everyone-else-nearly-died incident recently. Y’know tbh I never really thought about them being mad about that. I mean, that’s just what Hondo does! And it’s not that he on purposely left them at the mercy of the Empire, he left a little before things went south. Ezra seemed cool with it, so I certainly had no complaints. Buuut then again I’m just used to Hondo (and love him to death). And of course, we all know Ez’s judgement in general was not great that particular day *coughnolongeralieutenantcommandercough* So yeah I could see why now the Ghost fam had a problem with the pirate. But no worries Captain Ohnaka’s got a plan in mind that’ll make everyone happy — oh and did I mention it involves AZMORIGAN — Hondo’s new partner-in-sorta-kinda-crime? OMG I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hera that mad. I remember being rather surprised seeing Hondo and Azmorigan in the same room in the season trailer, after all, Az kinda sorta tried to KILL HIM. I suppose when the treasure awaiting you is bigger than a bounty, you can afford to let bygones be bygones among your fellow scoundrels. Though money may make friends out of Hondo and Azmorigan, it don’t necessarily make friends out of Hera and Azmorigan. As if the comment about technically still owning her wasn’t bad enough, the guy literally picked his ears and… ugh… wiped it on the door controls. Yes I’d forgotten how gross Az was. But yet, he’s still such a great weird-in-the-best-way bad guy. Both of those rather uncouth moments had me laughing and cringing at the same time. Laughing mostly because Hera is absolutely so done with him. He should be so glad she didn’t have a tray on her right then XP Also it’s kind of hilarious watching Hondo flounder trying to not use potentially insensitive terminology around Kanan. “I knew you’d see it my way! Oh sorry…” Well he’s trying to be considerate so we’ll give him some points for that if nothing else. Kanan doesn’t seem bothered though… I wouldn’t be surprised if he kinda enjoyed listening to him squirm. Anyway, though there’s some bad blood between these crews right now, Hondo’s mention of barrelloads of proton bombs in an abandoned Imperial ship definitely gets their attention. Plan’s easy, the Rebs get some serious weaponry, the scoundrels get some major ka-ching-ka-ching, everyone’s a winner! Well, that’s more of a goal than a plan I guess. Because technically the abandoned transport’s caught in a major storm above Wynkahthu. That makes it significantly more challenging. With AP-5’s know-how and Zeb’s leadership, they just might make it though. Ezra’s rather offended though that he wasn’t put in charge of the mission he set up. And I’m all “yeah because the last mission you led went so spectacularly!” but it’s more than that. Hera doesn’t quite see Ezra leading + Hondo scheming adding up to success. Ez is majorly chummy with the old pirate and perhaps, in his endearing-but-sometimes-misguided way of trying to see the best in everyone, he doesn’t quite see Hondo for who he really is. At that moment I about stood up and said “BUT HONDO OHNAKA IS A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH…!” and then I remembered the whole little thing where he held Anakin and Obi-Wan captive and might’ve *cough* zapped ’em for entertainment, and when he tried to steal kyber crystals from younglings, as well as a few other less-than-noble moments. And then I was all “OK so maybe Kanan and Hera have a point. And they don’t even know about those kerfuffles…” Yeees this should be fun though.
So the plan’s in motion. As long as Ezra does what he’s told, AP-5’s projected success rate of 38.5% isn’t accurate, and Azmorigan doesn’t fall down any more ladders, indeed this could be a win. Pfff I’m pretty sure Azmorigan’s the reason their chances aren’t higher 😛 One thing I absolutely love about this episode is seeing Zeb in charge, doing his boss Honor-Guard-Captain thang! We haven’t really had an opportunity to watch him in his element like this, mostly because in the past it was usually Kanan or Hera or one time Ezra in the lead on missions. And I’m sure, in part, it’s taken him some time to really want to be in that position again after past events. But he’s perfect for the job, especially since he’s had a longer military career than anyone in the Ghost crew. He knows what to do and how to do it and whoo he is so solidly awesome at it! NO ONE QUESTIONS THE PURPLE GUY! Hehe. Good thing we’ve got a solid leader because the Imp ship is dark, creepy, and apparently it has a ugnaught problem. Actually really it’s Hondo who’s got the ugnaught problem, in that this ugnaught works for him and isn’t happy Hondo left him here after they attacked the freighter and failed. In his defense, Ezra’s all “Welll from a certain point of view…!” XD Another reason Zeb makes a great leader is that he’s so intimidating he just knows how to make you listen. “Cargo hold now. I’ll rip your limbs off later” O.O See, it’s easy to assume he’s not serious because that’s not his nature that you know of, but the way he says it — and the fact alone he is an absolute fierce giant — would easily make one second-guess their defiance. It kinda works on Hondo at least. Oh my gracious this episode is so full of so many great little moments I could go on forever. Like the thing where Ezra lightsabers open the door just as Chopper turns out the power. That was so genius and it made what happens later even more genius! And of course, Zeb being so no-nonsense while Hondo and Azmorigan fight over the treasure like children. Things get tense pretty quickly though. All they’ve got to get the bombs from the freighter to the Ghost is a couple of winch cables. And don’t forget this is all happening in an insane storm that’s getting worse all the time. Then suddenly no one knows where Az went off to, and when Zeb goes off looking for him, he instead finds a few of the most utterly terrifying Imperial droids I’ve ever seen. It’s about then when the storm fries the controls and they start goin’ down. Hondo makes clear he doesn’t really care what happens to Azmorigan either way long as he’s got his moola (also drops a crate full of riches on Melch #Rude). And so Ezra sets off alone to find the others, and I’m guessing the old pirate’s no longer on the pedestal Ez put him on. Ezra’s desire to see the best in others is admirable, and I can be just like him in that way, to an extent. I definitely felt for him. I’ve enjoyed seeing this halfway-noble side of Hondo lately too. Just sometimes I get so caught up in his slightly-nicer self I forget that he can be a scoundrel when he wants to be. But even if Hondo’s not going to do the right thing, Ezra Bridger will.
We find Zeb and Azmorigan behind bars in the brig. Apparently AP-5 neglected to mention the Sentry Droids earlier. Let’s give AP a big hand for trying though! JK nope. And whoo yes how about those Sentry Droids? They’re most definitely all kinds of epic and awesome, but I’m honestly surprised they haven’t yet graced my nightmares. They are HUMONGOUS, and the way they walk and the echo of the floor beneath their feet make them seem even bigger. The low creepy vocalizations they make are perfectly shudder-inducing. Though I feel I often overuse the term “terrifying”, it truly feels the most appropriate word to describe them as a whole. Do not blame Azmorigan going all blaster-crazy for a minute. But hey, he actually brought it down! I love how even he can hardly believe he did something so brave while Zeb is all *facepalm* XD Unfortunately you blast one Sentry, all the rest of the Sentries will come join the party O.O Too bad the door has a gaping hole in it, huh? OMG I don’t know right now whether to I’m scared to death or about to die laughing! SO GENIUS. ALL OF IT. Hondo grabs some treasure and hops it aboard the winch back to the safety of the Ghost, with Azmorigan close behind riding the bombs. Even Chopper decides it’s a good time to jet. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN, ‘EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF’?! YOU’RE A DROID!” XD XD After enough close calls with the Sentries, Zeb and Ezra just barely make it to the Ghost themselves. Especially after the droids blasted the winch and sent them falling. Not only should be thankful for Zeb’s superb leadership, but also his prehensile feet! And can’t forget Ezra’s lightsaber-deflecting skills. Man oh man the epicness of it all wow! In case you didn’t know, this is what real friendship and teamwork looks like, Hondo.
Though it might not’ve been the easiest path to get there, the Rebs did score a victory today with a lovely collection of proton bombs at their side. By far though, Hondo and Azmorigan got the best riches of all — FRIENDSHIP! No actually they got Melch. PFFF OMG I DIED. THIS ENDING. THIS IS SURELY ONE OF THE BEST ENDINGS IN STAR WARS HISTORY OMG. I CLAPPED AND LAUGHED SO HARD I’M DOING IT RIGHT NOW. “Because… friendship is the greatest treasure…?” I love that the words clearly sound so foreign to him. He just does not get it. Someday perhaps he’ll figure it out. Someday. Until then, well, Force be with him… and Melch and Azmorigan too. They’re gonna need it 🙂
Yep that was a lot of fun. I’m sorry this wasn’t one of my more insightful posts, but it sure felt good to talk about all the funny moments and the serious moments and the edge-of-your-seat moments and all the other moments! Catch you again next week!

Rebel Transmissions: Brothers Of The Broken Horn

Hello and welcome my friends to this fine blog! And yes I completely read that in Hondo’s voice, because Hondo is awesome and he’s returned for this lovely episode of Rebels! Actually I’m still reading this in Hondo’s voice. #OhnakaFever is real. Yeah OK you probably just want me to start this week’s Rebel Transmission already… but don’t think that the fangirling will stop or anything, ’cause it never does around here…
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Rebels episodes Idiot’s Array, Rebel Resolve, and Brothers Of The Broken Horn

Phototitle for Rebel Transmission 2x05

Today we catch Ezra in the middle of some blaster training with Rex, not doing all that great TBH. And before he knows it, Kanan interrupts to start Jedi training. Needless to say Ezra’s pretty much done right now with being a Rebel and a Jedi. Everyone’s a bit shocked at his statement… even Chopper drops the blaster-practice helmet in dismay. It’s impossible not to feel for him though, I mean, Ezra’s still a kid and he’s still trying to figure out all this, and now things have just gotten more complicated as of late. But Sabine cues them in to a crew meeting before any further conversation can be had. A few Rebel friends need some help ’cause their fuel cells are in short supply, so the mission today is a shopping trip at the black market! Whee! Except for Ezra and Chopper though, ’cause he’s a bit overdue on his chores. Man I can’t imagine balancing two types of training, a job as a Rebel, and regular chores all at once! I don’t blame him for not getting everything done. But Hera don’t mess when it comes to pulling your weight. So yep now to scrub the Ghost‘s hull. Whee… yeah Ezra can’t help but kinda wish things were simpler, like back in the day when he was a Lothal street rat. Well, you know what they say about being careful what you wish for… ’cause shortly thereafter comes a distress call from the Broken Horn. Ezra seizes this opportunity to not only get a little break from the ordinary, but to settle that debt he owes Vizago for good. After all, you can’t deny someone help when they need it, right? Now if only he could get the Phantom out of the Ghost… somewhere Hera sensed her ship just got some major paint scratches. Heh heh honestly I’m amazed Ezra knows how to fly that ship at all since Hera seemed far from interested in letting him drive her baby. So with Chopper at his side, young Bridger heads off to find out what help he might be able to give Vizago. Though things definitely get interesting when he boards the Horn… not a soul in sight. Chopper comes up with a slightly more interesting find though — fuel cells! And a whole lotta them! Though yeah can I just say Vizago’s ride’s a bit… creepy? I don’t know if maybe just the lights are out or something (but if I recall it was still pretty dark back on Rebel Resolve) or if it’s just heightened because there’s no one around but deactivated thug droids, either way, it’s pretty creepy. But there’s a much different vibe coming out of the cockpit; the radio’s blastin’ and someone else is fixin’ things up. And that someone is Hondo Ohnaka! Yes it’s so great seeing this old space pirate again! Been one of my favorite kinda-sorta-bad-but-not-really guys for a long while! Ah words cannot full describe how exciting it is getting to hang out with him again! And it’s quite fun watching Ezra interact with him for the first time. Apparently Hondo won the Broken Horn in a game of sabacc. And his droids with their nifty push-button controller. Color Ezra suspicious, but he knows how to play his cards right with this guy’s type. Hehe “cards”… I made a pun. So as long as no one’s telling the complete truth, Ezra introduces himself as Lando Calrissian. Interesting choice, considering he could’ve just pulled out his fake name, Dev Morgan, but it works. Yessss I can totally see the resemblance! They’re like twins! XP Hondo is automatically impressed and doesn’t question for a minute why he’s 15 and mustacheless. He’s been looking for a few good crewmembers and just knows that “Lando” would be a good fit. Poor Hondo’s no longer a captain of anything or anyone since the Empire got involved. Doesn’t even have his monkey-lizard anymore *sniffles*. Oh how I’d love to hear some of his mostly-true stories…! And then along came a star destroyer who didn’t like that the Horn was on their turf. Thankfully, Chopper fixes up that hyperspace in record time and off they go, ready for some serious ADVENTURE!! After all, Hondo’s convinced they already make one dynamic duo! And that leads to a small request on the Captain’s part; some help with Ezra on his next job. Ezra’s not terribly interested until Chopper shows off those lovely power generators the old pirate’s got stockpiled. Young Bridger wheels quite a deal that gets them both what they want. Good to see he’s not lost any of his street-savviness! Even better to see that he’s using that savviness to help others. And he’s also savvy enough to swipe that droid controller of his, just in case something goes wrong. Nice move, “Lando”… and good thing ’cause something does indeed go wrong. Enter Azmorigan. Yup can’t get away from this nasty guy for long can we? “I DON’T DEAL WITH WASHED-UP OLD RELICS” “Oh c’mon leave your wife out of this! There’s no need for such impropriety among thieves!” That was perfection Hondo XD XP I guess when you hold the sort of power Azmorigan holds, you can be a complete jerk over minute details. Well, admittedly it may’ve also been because Az doesn’t trust Hondo farther than he can throw him, and he’s worth a lot of bounty cash, but still! Seems a bit of an overreaction. At least, not worth shoving someone out into space for. To quote a great duro, “…if you’re gonna kill him, kill him like a man”. That is why they’ve got Chopper as backup. Also Azmorigan’s hilarious “Whaaaaaat??” could rival Jerry the Minion’s XD So anyway it seems Az’s got this in the bag, the generators, the bounty, and a couple of his newest enemies at his disposal… but then in charged one fierce little C1-1OP! He may be cranky but Chop definitely comes through in the clutch! There’re crates flying, blasters firing, and Ezra doing some sweet Jedi ninja moves (sorry that was dumb-sounding I know). Oh and then in the midst of the chaos Captain Ohnaka shoves Ezra out of the way of oncoming heavy machinery… gahhhh for the minute I thought he might be dead I was so so very messed up. We all love his pirate-y wit and his pirate-y wisdom, but it’s his not-so pirate-y heart that really stands out in a crowd. *Feels feels* Chopper won’t take none of Azmorigan’s crud though and comes in packin’ two deadly blasters. The image of him standing there seemingly wa-wa-ing “say hello to my little friend” is too perfect 🙂 And just when we thought Hondo was dead, he came to… just as the cart short-circuited and sent him sprawling out in the direction of the soul-sucking darkness of space. Been one of those days huh Cap’n? But Ezra doesn’t hesitate to Force-grab his comrade and saves him just in time. JUST BARELY. And then I stopped holding my breath. Le phew. Hondo’s quite pleased to find out Ezra’s a Jedi though. Claims he was BFFs with a Jedi. Heh I can imagine said Jedi wouldn’t necessarily think similarly, but nonetheless, it’s sweet he thinks so well of them. *Gets rush of feels recalling the events of The Gungan General* Also, a Pirate Jedi would make an awesome Halloween costume! Note to self, try that out next year if I’m not a Rogue One or Ep. VII charrie. OK sorry. So yeah after the moment of honesty, it looks like these two could easily be buddies. YAY FRIENDSHIP! Awwz just gotta hug it out! OK so maybe Ezra’s not too keen on that part 😛 Also Ezra’s still a bit suspic-y, so before he joins any pirate crews or gets some variety of shirley temple from the galley, he might take a little more of a look around. And turns out that Vizago might be here, hanging out in his own personal jail cell. Yes it would make sense that Hondo wouldn’t break out his own expensive drinks… anyway yeah Vizago vs. stun cannon didn’t go well. So now might be a favor time. Ah yes watching Ezra in between this charaltan scuffle is delightful. Bridger is so very much boss right now. Though yeah after this fiasco methinks Vizago won’t be calling it even. Guarantee you the next time they’re in line at the ice cream shop, or the gas station, or some other bizarre situation, it’ll be favor time. Heck the way he is I wouldn’t be surprised if the big V held it over the Rebs’ heads just because! But that is a problem for another day, ’cause whoop-de-doo Hondo took the Phantom. But at least Vizago’s more than happy to escape-pod Ezra on outta there. Pfff his grumpy “I hate children” reminds me of Gru XD But funny story — as it turns out, the Phantom was on autopilot the whole time, and docked back with the Ghost without any trouble at all. And what does Ezra return to but a storytelling sesh with Hondo to the crew! Ezra does have to set some of the facts straight, but as Gandalf once said “all good stories need a little embellishment” 🙂 Kanan and Hera seem to be enjoying this. And so with everyone happy and settled, Hondo goes on his way on good terms with Ezra and his crew. And Ezra has a greater appreciation for where he is and who he is now. Aww all the good feels up in here! :3
And with that our wonderful little adventure comes to a close. So glad you could come along, my friends! And yes I am still talking like Hondo! So I better just end this madness before a bounty ends up on my head for driving you crazy.

SW Summer Reads – Jedi Prince #3: Zorba The Hutt’s Revenge

It’s time for another edition of Star Wars Summer Reads! And we’re returning once more to the epic post-Episode VI galaxy as written by the great Paul and Hollace Davids in the third installment in the Jedi Prince chronicles! I read this last SW Reads Day but didn’t get a chance to blog on it since, you know, all the other things I was blogging on, but now I am doing so, so yay! Ah, the exciting adventures in this series! They may be a little older than some books but they’re still among my favorites… and are currently all I know about this era in the SW universe (I know I know shame on me! XP ). If you want to read my take on the previous chapters, jet on over here for that thing with Vader’s glove and the whole lost Jedi city debacle. So enough chatter let’s find out exactly what secrets and fascinating tidbits we can discover in the midst of Zorba The Hutt’s Revenge! Ahh those crazy Hutts am I right? 🙂 I mean just look at that crazy hair he’s got on the cover!
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode II, Episode V, Episode VI, The Clone Wars Movie, Rebels episode Idiot’s Array, The Glove Of Darth Vader, The Lost City Of The Jedi, and Zorba The Hutt’s Revenge

So we reunite with our heroes as they’re heading off to a party! Han Solo’s housewarming party, to be precise. And even more precisely, for Han’s super-amazing floating skyhouse in Cloud City (pretty much everyone’s dream house, am I right?). As it seems though, Luke hadn’t really thought of a housewarming gift until literally the last second, so he and his young Jedi prince ward, Ken were spitballing gift ideas. But what do you give the Rebel hero who has everything? Turns out Ken has the winning idea — a housekeeping droid! Threepio, Artoo, and Chip are in on the idea. Luke’s not sure how keen Han would be on the idea, considering he’s a bachelor and junk (not to mention his short temper with Threepio some days XP ). But Threepio believes it would definitely be in Captain Solo’s best interest to have someone help keep that place of his in shape, considering he’s… a bachelor and junk. Haha so true. Luke finally decides to go with it and he and his comrades take a detour to the Tatooine Droidfest to do some shopping! It may not be the brightest spot in the galaxy, but Droidfest has the best selection and the best prices. Like Black Friday, but… no, on second thought it’s pretty much exactly the same as Black Friday! Right down to the chaos that ensues before long. The shopping was the easy part, finally settling on KT-18, or Kate. A friendly, top-of-the-line housekeeping droid who’s worked for a number of Corellian pilots and turned them into gentlemen (RUN HAN RUN!! XD ). Not cheap in the slightest, but worth the moola for sure. Oh, and then there came the chaos… Tusken Raiders on Banthaback having a land dispute with the Jawas. And Luke gets caught up in the middle of it while Ken and the droids dive for shelter in a sandcrawler. See? Exactly like Black Friday! That’s why you should’ve done this earlier and done it online, Luke! I know you’re a Rebel hero and stuff but you should be able to make time to do nice things before they become a burden! 😛
Quick history lesson: do you know what became of Jabba’s Palace after the Rebs did him and his whole crew in? It just sorta sat there ’cause there was no will and now it’s owned by the government. Makes you wonder where Rotta is right now (hopefully living a slightly more respectable life than his dad did, I would hope). Whatever the case, Jabba’s dad Zorba didn’t get the memo about anything that happened these last few months. So big daddy Zorba ain’t too happy about not being let into the palace (apparently the government’s sanctioned it off as a “No Hutts Allowed” zone #uncool) and not knowing where his kid is. He heads off to the Mos Eisley cantina for some answers, but doesn’t come back liking those answers too much for, well, obvious reasons. So Zorba decides to hire some scum and villainy on the spot to hunt down Jabba’s killer — Leia Organa. And on top of that, Zorba happens to know exactly where that will is: right inside an old droid. The Hutt’s back in business and he’s got a score to settle! This could be a problem…
But Luke and the gang already have a few problems of their own. Remember what cray happened at the Droidfest? Yeah Commander Skywalker finally was able to join Ken and the droids in their sandcrawler hideout. It’s hot and slow but it gets them out of that mess in the end, even though it happens to be night by the time they get out. Then new problem: someone else hired bounty hunters that day — Trioculus. Now not only is Luke gonna be late for the party but now he’s got to fight a pair of hunters! The Twi’lek and the Aqualish hunters put up a bit of a fight, but Luke put up a bit more of one and lightsabered them like a boss. On their way back, Luke asks Ken if he knows something as to what the new Emperor wants with him. Ken really really doesn’t want to tell him; DJ-88, the teacher droid who raised him, had warned him not to spill anything he learned in the ancient Jedi library to anyone, not even his mentor. He finally decides to tell him at least a little something… that he knows quite a bit of dirt on Trioculus, stuff that would only put Luke in further danger. Luke doesn’t press on further in that, but he still hopes that someday Ken’ll open up to him more. And in other news I just adore Luke and Ken’s relationship! While not officially a master and padawan, you can very much see the similarity. And Luke makes a really great master for someone who’s never done it before 🙂
They finally make it to Bespin, though. The description of the lovely city in the clouds makes me so badly want to see more of it. *CoughputitinthenewtrilogypleaseCough* They’re met by Rebel, ex-scoundrel, and governor Lando Calrissian, who quickly befriends the young prince. They have a pretty nice view of where Han’s place lies, with the exception of the serious air pollution going on. Yes indeedy this series definitely reminds you that sometimes the Star Wars galaxy has the same problems we do here in the Milky Way side of town. Though at least we don’t have to worry about Imperial factory barges causing said problems, which is why lovely Bespin isn’t so lovely to breathe right now. Lando shoots a rental his friends’ way and promises he’ll join the party after he handles some trouble at Holiday Towers Casino. Fun seeing how much this ol’ smoothie’s grown up, isn’t it? He used to break the rules and now he makes the rules!
So clearly Han’s housewarming party was the event of the year. Swarms of Han’s friends from throughout the galaxy made it and it truly sounds fabulous. And Leia happens to have the best (read comfiest) seat in the house through it all. The Captain himself is pretty busy, between chatting with friends and serving refreshments, it’s no wonder he stuck Chewbacca on cooking duty (I really really hope they make hairnets that big… it’s best not to think about how much hair might’ve gotten in the food). ‘Course he did get some breaks, there are dances with Leia to be had man! #Priorities! And of course Luke, Ken and the droids arrive fashionably late. And turns out Han is definitely into Kate. Quite frankly I’m jealous I don’t have a droid who can zap stains off the ceiling without breaking a sweat– er, circuit. It was worth all the trouble they went to to get her! In the midst of the housewarming, Ken, with the aide of a set of long-range macrobinoculars, happens to spy what appears to be a Huttian ship entering Cloud City. Well, this really could be a problem…
Yes, Zorba’s come for a visit, but not yet to the princess. First, he’s got some legal biz to tend to at the casino. Technically he owns the place… well, sorta, Jabba used to own it, but after he bit the dust nobody else knew that so Lando owns the place now but Zorba ain’t havin’ it. The only way to settle this is with a friendly game of sabacc. What could possibly go wrong, right? And as far as Lando can tell, big daddy Hutt don’t got game. So betting the entire future of Cloud City is hardly something to worry about right? I’ve said it before… sabacc has a higher ratio of misses than hits… when you see guys playing this game, be aware somebody’s losing their fabulous Corellian ship, or their fabulous C1-1OP, or in this case, an entire city and role as governor. It’s not entirely Lando’s fault, I mean, who would’ve guessed that Zorba’s deck had markings that only he could see that could help him win? But the end result is still the same… Lando seriously seriously lost, and a Hutt now owns the place — the entire place. As in, the whole city. Well, this really is a problem…
However, things were going along quite swimmingly at the skyhouse. The party was over, but the rest of the gang was still hangin’ around. And Kate had the place sparkling as if a party’d never happened! It’s all good… and then Lando called. “Soooo here’s the thing… I’ve heard the theme park business is booming right now…” jk I’m glad that’s not quite how it went down (though he’s totally serious about the theme park thing. I mean, we are talking about the guy who smuggled a puffer pig on a chance he could make a quick buck… he’s an entrepeneur, after all). And the final blow of bad news is that he may’ve overheard Zorba talking about the whole “revenge” thing and yeah… as Mace Windu once said, “This party’s over.” O_O So Han’s thinking getting Leia off-planet would be their next best move, and then to add to the chaos Kate takes a fall off the skyhouse observation deck! Luke and Leia jump into action (and a sweet cloud car convertible) to save their droid friend. But Luke handled that car in a way that would make his dad proud and managed to save Kate before she hit the planet’s liquid core. But while they’re down there, Luke spies Trioculus’ sail barge. A floating factory that makes a pretty scary array of Imperial weapons… and a pretty scary amount of braze. They come down for just a little look and that’s when the laser defense system comes on and now we really really have a problem! Crashed car, stormtroopers all over the place, Luke gets trapped in a tunnel filled with poisonous gas, Leia gets taken hostage… fun right? Though yeesh I’m glad Luke got outta there that was pretty scary.
Of course Han and Ken had no idea as to what had conspired, so we find the Han showing off his awesome racecars to the young prince. Yeah racecars plural. The Rebel Alliance must give him some kinda paycheck! Then Luke sent Han a distress call and Han made the huge mistake of leaving Ken alone with his gorgeous super-fast racing machines. Ken’s clearly a good kid, I’m certainly not saying he’s not, ’cause he is. But heck, you couldn’t leave me alone with one of those things and expect me not to at least try and drive it a little! So I don’t really blame the boy for taking it out for a spin (and admittedly, it was kinda an accident). Problem is is that he’s kinda not the legal age to drive and… yeah… cops come along, and then they’re all “hey whaddya know the Emperor’s been looking for you!” and Ken’s all “aw dang.” because who wouldn’t be right now?
And guess where Leia ended up? On a very much unwarranted “date” with Trioculus. Ohhh yes. Bro tries to be smooth, but Leia answers that with a sound and well-deserved slap to the face. The only reason she can’t take her eyes off him is because his scarred three-eyed face is downright horrifying. Obviously Trioculus doesn’t pick up on that red flag. He’s certain he can win her over with his tall, dark[sidery], and (perhaps not so) handsome self. He’s like “C’mon I’m not so bad bae. It’s not like you haven’t killed someone before” and she’s all “IT WAS IN SELF-DEFENSE AND IT WAS JABBA I WAS WELL WITHIN MY RIGHT!” and he’s all “Psh you totally want to kill me now right? See it’s not hard. So how’s about getting married?”. Oh yeah real classy Emperor, really classy! Despite her complete and utter disinterest (and disgust), he’s willing to wait for her to figure it out. Well, he’ll be waiting forever ’cause dude that ain’t happenin’! But as we know, Trioculus here isn’t the only one who wants Leia… and that is seriously a problem.
Zorba’s glad to be back in some sort of seat of power, but he’s not lovin’ the braze Trioculus brought with him. One of his hunters, however, may have brought him the key to getting all his scores settled. Leia’s on Trioculus’ sail barge, a kid named Ken was taken in by Cloud City police… a trade is in order, I do believe. Ken wasn’t about to talk to the old Hutt, but that’s where having sweets covered in truth serum comes in. You gotta give Zorba credit for being prepared though, I mean, not everyone just carries around avabush spice every day. I’m pretty sure most people don’t expect to need to get the truth out of someone on the regular. So good for you Zorba– er, not good for you! Making the young prince spill the fact that he’s very much a Jedi Prince! And then in turn imprisoning him in the casino basement! Duuuuuude! When Trioculus shows up for the trade, he’s hardly impressed with this great and mighty Jedi Prince being a boy… up until Ken in a rather sleep-deprived state points out just how much dirt he knows about him, including the fact that Trioculus is not the rightful Emperor and isn’t Sidious’ kid. Yeah Trioculus definitely gets why now he needs to kill this kid. But he’s not feeling the trade. They have quite the… intellectual conversation (read: a lot of yelling that doesn’t get either baddie anywhere) and basically there is no trade. They entered casual acquaintances and left mortal enemies. And Zorba’s somehow too fast for the the Emperor’s ‘troopers. Yeah that must’ve been a real blow to their confidence. You don’t mess with Zorba, ’cause this all ended with the Emperor in a block of carbonite. Ken played the mind trick card on a prison guard and a taxi driver and made it back without much problem ultimately. Though Han and Luke had a slightly harder time busting Leia out of the Emperor’s place, mostly on account that Zorba was in on the chase too. Zorba had no idea though that they’d rescued Leia so as far as he knew, he’d gotten his sweet revenge on both of his worst enemies! Though unfortunately for him it won’t be the last he sees of either of them…
So the good news is Trioculus is out of commission. The bad news is, Leia’s gonna have to lay low to avoid Zorba and his hunters. But Han really has no problem with this; he’s all there for his girl, even if he has to leave his skyhouse behind for a bit. He’s aiming for somewhere hidden away from Imperials and hunters alike, somewhere kinda romantic. Hehehe Han let Luke drive after that. He had other things to tend to… 😉 While having this brief sweet moment with his princess, he allows the thought of a proposal to cross his mind. If he can find the right words for it… just maybe… ❤ *Fangirl squees loudly* Yus while the danger's not behind them yet, there are plenty of good things in front of them, for Jedi, Jedi Princes, and Rebels alike 🙂
Awwww… I know right? Ah this series is so much fun! They may take a while but I'm glad to be writing these book Closer Looks again! Also ALMOST ONE MORE WEEK UNTIL REBELS SEASON 2!! GET EXCITED PEEPS!!

TIM Recap: Rule Of Thirty-Two

It’s that time of year again, friends…. the This Is Madness Star Wars Character Tournament is in full swing! It’s a lot of fun to participate in something of this sort since basketball’s not in my wheelhouse, but it’s not without difficulty. I mean, picking favorites is not one of my strong suits, especially when I love all the SW characters! Last year I chronicled all my votes on tumblr, but for this year, I’ve decided to recap all of my votes here, since some of my explanations can get pretty wordy 🙂 So without further ado, my votes for the Rule Of 32! And remember, I love all these guys equally, really, so if you don’t agree with my vote, just remember we’re really on the same page still.
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode I, Episode III, Episode IV, Episode VI, TCW episodes The Mandalore Plot, Sphere Of Influence, Nightsisters, Wookiee Hunt, Brothers, Revival, the “D-Squad” story arc, Shades Of Reason, The Lawless, Voices, Rebels episodes Spark Of Rebellion, Droids In Distress, Idiot’s Array, and Fire Across The Galaxy.

DAY ONE: HERA VS. LEIA/INQUISITOR VS. GRIEVOUS.

I was super-excited for TIM this year because this year the Rebels would get to join in! But I guess I never thought as to what it’d be like to have to choose between amazing heroes from the SW films and these new amazing heroes from Rebels. Usually, my method is to choose the hero based on their amount of impact on the SW Galaxy or on the other character. But dang… it’s a lot harder than it looks!
For Rebels, I ended up choosing Leia. In all technicality, Hera’s probably made a teensy bit more impact, as she’s technically Leia’s boss in this situation. But man… I just couldn’t go up against “her worship”! I suppose a lot of it’s because we’ve seen how awesome Leia commands her fellow Rebels through some of the biggest events in SW history. And she’s Anakin and Padme’s daughter and Luke’s sister so that also gave her a bit of a leg up. Leia won, which doesn’t surprise me, and I bet Hera’s proud of her 🙂
For Bad Guys, I ended up giving the vote to The ‘Quiz here. I was a little surprised in some ways that Grievous won. My method for Dark Side votes usually is on account of who’s the badder, but in a way it just seems like I’m oftentimes picking the “cooler” of the two. Now yeah there’s no doubt Grievous is a lean, mean, lightsaber-slashing machine, and I’ve certainly voted for him a good bit in the past two tournaments. Considering how absolutely in-your-face nasty the General is, you’d think he’dve had my vote. But The Inquisitor… he’s got class! He’s just as menacing, even without two less ‘sabers on hand, and he does it all with this seriously chilling flair! I think there’s something to be said for the way he does things as versus Grievous… a quiet evil that isn’t always so quietly evil. Ah well, somehow that came out an underdog vote, but no hard feelings to the General.

DAY TWO: QUI-GON VS. YODA/JANGO VS. GREEDO
TIM Picks: Qui-Gon & Jango Fett
So obviously I’m a terrible human being because every year without fail I keep voting against Yoda on the first round. It’s not that I don’t love Yoda, guys, it’s just they keep pitting him against Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan and I can’t vote against them somehow! It’s useless to resist! But hey, let’s give Qui-Gon some credit here, I mean, he did totally uncover the Force-spirit stuff before Yoda did! So if Yoda shows up in the Sequel Trilogy (and the fact he already did show up in Episode VI), he’s got no one to thank but Master Jinn, the rebel Jedi 🙂 If more people used my methods to vote he might win one of these, but ah well. Maybe next year?
For Bounty Hunters… it’s almost unfair to pit Greedo against a Mando! Even if that Mando doesn’t do too well ultimately! But yeah, even knowing some of Greedo’s adventures prior to Episode IV in The Clone Wars, this guy still doesn’t really hold a candle to Jango in terms of badness, and in some ways coolness (ahh don’t hurt me Greedo fans!! *ducks under desk*). I’d really like to see some of these guys more equally matched in years to come. Perhaps Jango versus Pre Vizsla? That’d be interesting…

DAY THREE: HAN VS. LANDO/MAUL VS. PALPATINE
TIM Picks: Han & Maul
Another year, another win for Captain Solo! I keep feeling bad for Lando and thinking “maybe next year”, but it never happens! Ugh Han’s just one of those characters I can’t vote against! He’s just so amazing! He’s one of the most epic of epic heroes! Here’s a tip, Lando… if you want my vote next year, send me a puffer pig and complement my art. You’ll have it in the bag for sure then 🙂
As for the Sith… yeah another vote for coolness over badness, because dude in the game of evil Darth Sidious here always wins! Even then, Maul’s still quite the terrifying, absolutely nasty guy. He started out so quietly evil and then blossomed into a revenge-seeking, robot-legged crazy man. You could almost say he’s at equals with Sidious, but well… the Emperor did completely pwn him. But not in this battle, no sir! Sorry Sidious but he’s still cooler than you 😛 *Gets hit by Force lightning*

DAY FOUR: REX VS. GREGOR/HONDO VS. VIZSLA

You’re probably thinking I have something against Captain Rex since I seem to vote for every other clone over him. But look, Rex is easily everyone’s favorite clone, and I feel like these other brothas deserve some love, too. Gregor was so brave! He put aside his dead-end job on an even more so dead-end planet to save Colonel Gascon and the droids! He gave up his life to help them succeed in their mission! If that isn’t brave, I don’t know what is. C’mon won’t anyone else give him some love? Yes I know Rex is great and I’ll always love him but there’s no “I” in “The 501st”! (Unless, of course, you spell it out but not the point)
And yeah another underdog vote went to Hondo Ohnaka, and it definitely was on account of who’s the better person. Hondo’s a pretty decent fellow, despite he’s a pirate and may or may not cause you trouble depending on who’s paying him more. But darn it I love pirates! And his sense of wit! And really everything else about him! Pre Vizsla can’t help but be cool, of course, since he’s a Mando, but I’m often surprised he has as many friends as he does… ’cause he sure packs a lot of attitude! That moment in The Mandalore Plot when he throws the word “failure” at his fellow soldier and shoots him without even looking always stands out to me. He is one bad dude, for sure. So bad that I really couldn’t not give it to Hondo. And may I also mention that Hondo took on Darth Maul and lived? Can’t really say that for Pre, now can we?

DAY FIVE: R2-D2 VS. SABINE/TARKIN VS. PIETT
TIM Picks: R2-D2 & Tarkin
This was one of the hardest votes for me. Not the Tarkin vs. Piett thing, that was way too easy, considering I have trouble remembering Piett’s name half the time and how terrifying Tarkin truly is. But man… choosing between Artoo and Sabine was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Because Sabine is just so awesome, and you know how I’ve used the excuse to vote for Qui-Gon because he’s my SW Myers-Briggs twin? Sabine is technically now my Rebels twin! So a part of me still wonders if I should’ve given her the vote. But that little droid’s done a lot in life! He’s been around since day one and will continue even into the new trilogy! And he even played his part in Rebels, giving Sabine the suggestion to overload those blasters as a weapon! It was mostly that last bit that got me to vote for Artoo. That, and he’s just so stinkin’ adorable! Ladies and gentlemen, another character I can’t vote against, R2-D2!

DAY SIX: AHSOKA VS. OBI-WAN/BOBA VS. VENTRESS
TIM Picks: Obi-Wan & Ventress
Boy this was a hard one on both sides. I mean, obviously I knew from the get-go I’d probably end up giving Master Kenobi the vote, since I can’t humanly vote against him. But it hasn’t been long since Ahsoka waltzed back into the SW Universe and made me love her even more! So I had to rationalize it on the account that Obi-Wan trained Anakin who trained Ahsoka. It’s not so much on a level of who made the greater impact, because Ahsoka heading up the Rebel Alliance and Obi-Wan getting Luke involved with the Rebels to start with are both extremely important. But eh that’s how it goes in the TIM tournament! Next year will be your year, Ahsoka… next year!
Now as for the bounty hunters out here… this one was incredibly hard. Because Boba’s a shoo-in, right? He’s everyone’s favorite bounty hunter! (Except for the Dengar minority) And every year I’ve voted for him, because of course he’s just that cool and just that awesome. But Ventress… ugh she’s really really grown on me these past few years. She was already a super-cool Sith-y sort, but then she went and became a bounty hunter and has proved to actually have a heart. And darn it if there’s one thing I can’t vote against, it’s a scoundrel who’s not so scoundrel-y after all! And my inability to vote against her will increase once I read Dark Disciple. So yeah I am sorry, fellow Fett fans, I have let you down. But at least he won the vote and will likely get my vote in the next round!

DAY SEVEN: CHEWBACCA VS. ZEB/VADER VS. DOOKU
TIM Picks: Chewbacca & Darth Vader
OK you know what’s just as hard as choosing between Sabine and Artoo? It’s choosing between Zeb and Chewie. I never would’ve expected it’d be this hard to pick between movie characters and Rebels characters! I mean, they’re both epic and all kinds of awesome and know how to handle bucketheads, but how do you choose between them?? HOW I SAY?! Well, if they could’ve arm-wrestled it might’ve helped me pick, but honestly I have no clue how that’d go down. If perhaps Chewbacca had been among the Wookiees Zeb helped rescue I might’ve given it to our favorite Honor Guard. But then it occurred to me that Chewie helped save Ahsoka, who in turn grew up and played a major part in the Rebellion that Zeb is currently a big part of himself. So there Chewbacca wins! Zeb wasn’t too happy about that, but he went and thrashed a few ‘troopers and he feels better now.
As for the Sith… um… yeah, Darth Vader couldn’t not win. Dooku’s pretty nasty himself but seriously… against Vader? No contest. We’ve all seen Episode III, it doesn’t end well for the Count. And plus, Vader’s just awesome period.

DAY EIGHT: PADME VS. JAR JAR/JABBA VS. FORTUNA
TIM Picks: Padme & Jabba
Honestly, at first, I couldn’t believe they would actually put Jar Jar into the tournament. I mean, I love him, but I’m not sure I can say the same for the majority. And really, I wanted to vote for Padme, because she’s strong, clever, smart, and fabulous, and because of the kinda big deal role she plays in the SW Galaxy as Luke and Leia’s mom. I wasn’t going to vote for Jar Jar just because I wasn’t sure anyone else would, that wouldn’t be fair. I have reasons when I vote for underdogs! But then… well, the sound you heard was the sound of all those who filled out brackets ahead of time crying. Jar Jar’s actually got the majority of the vote! Talk about an upset! So either he has a larger fanbase and less people hating on him now or else a bunch of people just wanted to throw off what everyone expected. But hey, I’m happy for ya Representative Binks! You go win this thang!! And again, in the battle of the baddies, Jabba always wins as versus his lackeys. Though it was nice to see Bib’s face in the ring this time around instead of Salacious Crumb 🙂

So there you have it guys, it’s been some awesome first round of This Is Madness, hasn’t it? I’ll keep you updated as each round continues!

Reveling In Rebels: A Season One Recap, Part 2

So this is a continuation of last week’s blog, in which I spazzed my head off over Star Wars Rebels. Read the first part here. Spoiler warnings on that post still apply here. Don’t read if you haven’t seen the entirety of Rebels Season One! Preferably you should’ve seen all the movies, too…

So where was I? Oh yeah the incredible two-parter that is Empire Day and Gathering Forces! Yes I’ll never forget how my jaw dropped at the end of Empire Day and how I practically grabbed the screen and yelled “‘TO BE CONTINUED’?! AHHH I DON’T THINK I CAN WAIT ANOTHER WEEK TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS!!” OK that was mostly on the inside but I’m pretty sure the expression on my face sure looked it. It’s funny how, after watching tons of episodes of The Clone Wars that were multi-part cliffhangers, I wasn’t suspecting Rebels to do one so soon! But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. These episodes are just chock-full of epicness. It’s not every day you find yourself on the run from The Inquisitor and Agent Kallus, trying to save the Rodian who knew too much, while uncovering a difficult chunk of your past, and shortly thereafter figuring out letting go and forgiveness while staring down Fyrnocks! Yeah has anyone else really thought about the fact that all of these events happened in one day? Oh, and if you didn’t already hear, the freaky but incredibly cool realization that Ezra shares an exact birthday with Luke and Leia! Dang that still blows my mind! But yeah it’s almost impossible to try and reiterate all of these episodes’ awesomeness in one paragraph. But yeah they really got us a bit teary-eyed both ways and set the stage for the events to come, as things get more and more intense and we further dig into Ezra’s past. And there is still so much more to be uncovered in the seasons to come! Is that not mind-blowing?! Oh, and am I the only one still wondering what exactly Tseebo told Hera about the Bridgers? Or am I just dumb and didn’t pick up on something obvious?
Then the epicness continued with Path Of The Jedi. This episode… ah man it’s still as incredible as the day I first saw it! It’s pretty much the definition of an emotional rollercoaster, as the first half of Ezra’s trial is downright terrifying, and then the second half contrasts that with feelings of peace, hope, and victory. Getting to see Ezra grow up in this one is just too great. Especially when he gets that lightsaber crystal… I pretty much exploded with excitement 🙂 It’s not an easy road to that super-feely ending though… Path Of The Jedi just keeps on keeping you guessing. I know I for one had some trouble figuring out what was real life and what wasn’t sometimes! But after all these fearful visions, after all these moments of hopelessness, uncertainty, tears, and anger… there is still light. Specifically, Yoda in the form of light. Which yeah you and I both know that was one of the most epic things ever 🙂 Wow… just wow… I don’t know if I can say anything else that hasn’t been said before about this episode. It’s just… one of… the most… amazing. ^w^
And then Lando showed up in Idiot’s Array! Oh boy that was a fun one! And Lando’s role in this episode couldn’t be more perfect! Seeing his swaggyness colliding with our Rebs was an absolute treat. Plus, we get to see more of Hera being awesome. Hehe the way she suckerpunched Lando… XD Sorry Lando but that was one of the highlights of this episode! This adventure’s absolutely a classic, no questions. And we can only hope to run into Mr. Calrissian again in the future, because we can’t forget that this guy’s gonna be a Rebel himself someday down the road 🙂
Oh and who could’ve seen it coming on Vision Of Hope? Seriously I didn’t see it coming! But did anyone else? Well if you did don’t rub it in, k? But even amidst Trayvis’ betrayal, we get plenty of great moments with the Ghost gang and are reminded that it’s never wrong to hope, because hope gives us strength even in the dark times. And hey, it was about time the galaxy got some real hope on the air, and one episode later… Ezra would be the one to deliver that. But I’m not the only one who’s silently rooting for Gall Trayvis to redeem himself, right? What, just me? Well, we’ll just have to see, I suppose… it’ll definitely be interesting seeing where his story goes.
AND ERMAGOSH THE FINALE. Where do I begin?! Call To Action left me with such feels I about hugged my screen. Tarkin proved himself to be one terrifying adversary in ways I couldn’tve imagined. Ezra’s simple but powerful “Rebel Transmission” got me crying. And Kanan… gosh I was so scared for him, yet it made me love him even more because of just how brave he was. I went into this episode having no clue as to what massive thing was about to shake down, and I couldn’t help but hang on to every word and every moment. Rebel Resolve reminded us just how pivotal Kanan is to the crew as Ezra, Zeb, Sabine, and Chopper are willing to do whatever it takes to get him back. Literally whatever, since they went to Vizago of all people! The second part just reiterates just how strong the bond is between our Rebels. And I absolutely adore Chopper’s heroism in this one… it’s not the first time we’ve seen our favorite little C1-1OP stand up in a time of need, but it’s definitely one of the most dangerous times he’s had to do so. Oh, and again, wishing the best for our Imperial droid friend… hopefully king of the Lothcats about now. Though seriously Chopper no one deserves what you did to him! XD
Then there was Fire Across The Galaxy. I’m still reeling from how many feels I got gutpunched with and how much my mind got blown. Seeing how everything came together, how everything led up to it… words can’t adequately describe. Which is kinda a problem for me since I’m writing a blog and all! 😛 But yeah… the incredible heroism Ezra and Kanan showed, the courage of the rest of our crew as they literally go and fly a neon TIE into a battle zone, the amazing fact that our Rebels are no longer alone in their fight, and obviously AHSOKA being Fulcrum… it’s a recipe for pure amazing awesomeness. The term “awesomeness” may be a smidge overused, but I mean it in the true sense of the word… that it leaves me in complete and utter awe, and I know for a fact that it’s the same for all of my fellow fans. COMPLETE AND UTTER AWE. Oh, and Darth Vader showing up, can’t forget about that! Those darkened red eyes in that helmet… the sound of his breath… the flow of that cape… even Kallus is kinda all “Yikes… I almost feel bad for those Rebels… but not really.”! It just flat-out gives you chills, don’t it? Vader means business and he won’t be so easy for our “Rebel Scum” to evade. Yeah, seriously. CHILLS. And seeing Ahsoka again… still one of the most amazing things ever. The cool thing is, back when I was starting to get into SW more and more, I gravitated to Ahsoka pretty quickly. She reminded me of myself, for one thing. But I could also relate to her because she, like me that early on in the SW fandom, didn’t totally understand everything going on around her with all the war and politics and stuff. Ahsoka was a key to understanding a lot of that. And as I started to watch the TCW more and more, as she grew up, my level of SW fandom and knowledge grew with her. So now… seeing Ahsoka all grown up and leading the Rebel Alliance… it’s just incredible. It’s more than I ever could’ve hoped for her! And I can see a bit of a reflection, as somehow, someway, I know enough about Star Wars that I’m sitting here, writing about it on a weekly basis. And every time I read an old blog, I realize just how much I’ve “grown up”, in a way, as well. And then I get all nostalgic and get a case of the feels remembering this amazing journey I’ve had learning and loving SW!
Well now I’ve gotten a bit off-point, but I don’t want to repeat myself all over again from the Transmission I did on this one. I just stinkin’ love this show and being in this fandom! Rebels has made such an impact on my life, as it truly is the first thing in SW I’ve been able to be a part of since day one. Throughout all the highs and lows, the ups and downs, every victory and every defeat, these six amazing individuals stand for others, stand up for what’s right, and stand together. And that, my friends, is just one of the reasons this show is as incredible as it is. Their journey has indeed just begun. And I definitely can’t wait to rejoin our heroes in the months to come 🙂
And thus endeth my dorky fangirling. For now…
