Rebel Transmissions: Trials Of The Darksaber

First of all, I apologize for the delay on this one. Life just gets busy man. I’m figuring my posts from here on out’ll be weekend things, at least for a while. But there’s no way I’ll stop writing ’bout my Rebels, especially with an episode like this. Let’s dig in and dissect the beautiful, rich episode known as Trials Of The Darksaber.
NOTE: Contains spoilers from TCW episodes The Mandalore Plot and Shades Of Reason, and Rebels episodes Imperial Supercommandos, Visions And Voices, and Trials Of The Darksaber

So! The Darksaber! It’s a big deal. A very very big deal. A bigger deal than I’d ever realized, even with years of SW experience under my belt. I happened to have rewatched The Mandalore Plot a few days ago, and it amazed me realizing how far that little black blade has gone since then. To hear Pre Vizsla talk of its history, boasting of how many Jedi have died by it, doesn’t evoke any sense of honor. That’s just Pre for you tho he’s sorta kinda a lot arrogant. Fenn Rau’s version of the story has a lot more going for it, telling of the Mando-Jedi who forged the unique weapon and the symbol of power it became to all of Mandalore. Oh my gravy the epicness. The animation they used for the backstory was just all kinds of wow. Though for many of my readers the notion of a Mando-Jedi wasn’t new, it was mind-blowing for me. I once joked that, considering the generally difficult relationship between the supercommandos and the Force-wielders, Mando blood and large numbers of midichlorians were “akin to oil and water” (Rebel Transmissions: The Protector Of Concord Dawn 2/6/16). The prospect of Mando-Jedi has always been cool but I had no clue how it’d work in a canon sense. Well… apparently it did. Get me a canon novel on Tar Vizsla stat! Fenn is majorly impressed Sabine was able to find it, after all, the one who wields ‘saber could unite all of Mandalore. But apparently Sabine hasn’t touched it since Dathomir…
Also wow every time I turn around, our resident artist has made my new favorite painting! Most kawaii family portrait ever! Love that she drew Ezra looking a tad uncomfortable caught in Zeb’s brohug; she’s still not gonna give him a respectful artistic rendering XD I admit I got a little distracted from the feels at hand looking at the art all over her quarters. Tbh I was really hoping to spot her Cad Bane and Embo doodles but either we don’t see those angles of the room or she took those down in favor of some new masterpieces. Sabine’s surrounded by color, but all feels blue and gray right now as she heads to a meeting. Also Chopper kind of “purring” elicited quite an “awww…” from me. I believe that was Chop’s way of showing some compassion. He doesn’t do it a lot so it’s totally totally precious. She goes into this meeting with her mind already made up; she’s not about to learn how to use the Darksaber. Far as she’s concerned it’s done too much harm and there’s no way she could unite her clan for the mini-Alliance’s cause. OK so this was one of many many things in this episode that surprised me and intrigued me. I wasn’t sure Sabine even knew what the blade was, let alone its significance. It makes sense in retrospect though considering the value Mandos place on their history. Beyond that, I had no idea she’d be so very against it (I mean, she did choose to take it home), but like say, I had no idea really of its significance either. Even Ezra doesn’t know if giving her a lightsaber is ideal without aid of the Force. Pff I love that he makes himself out like an expert when he’s totally not XP Kanan, Hera, and Fenn all know though that learning to wield it would make a galaxy of difference right now. So, reluctantly, the fierce little Wren takes the hilt…
Training begins once Kanan, Sabine, and Ezra set up camp far off from the base (“…you’ll do less damage out here.” “I’ll damage your face if you don’t shut up” XD ). And Kanan starts her off with sticks. Y’know if I recall Kanan started Ezra out on an actual lightsaber (Granted, Ez did nearly spear Master Jarrus in the face when he first turned it on… but then again, Sabine already knows how to ignite the Darksaber, so that wouldn’t be an issue). And I mean, dude! We’ve seen an actual training mode on lightsabers! I don’t think even tiny younglings in the Temple started off with sticks! Sabine’s confident in her skills with a stick, but Kanan downs her pretty fast, so Ezra takes over for her training buddy. Though Sabine doesn’t appreciate it much, I love watching Ezra teach her. He doesn’t know it all himself, but perhaps that honesty of not knowing everything makes him a more relatable teacher than Master Jarrus right now. Hera’s not sure what Kanan’s doing with this brand of training, but I kinda get the feeling Kanan’s not entirely sure either. He wants to do things differently with Sabine, but days later he’s still not feeling like she’s improved enough to handle the real thing. Sabine gets a little bit of a leg up when Fenn gives her a pair of genuine fully-loaded Mandalorian vambraces, but not for long around Master Jarrus. Understandably, she was kind of completely done with him after that and ventured off for some alone time. It gave me some serious massive feels watching Ezra try and encourage her, but there’s more to her frustration than merely Kanan’s teaching methods. How’s a traitor like herself supposed to go back to her family and lead her clan? *Cries forever* Also, interesting that the Bendu was there all along. Wonder what he’s thinkin…?
And so the feels continued to wreck me when we spent a moment with Kanan and Hera. Half the feels are due to the fact I still adore how honest and raw they are with each other. The other half has a lot to do with this glimmer of real pain from the past. “Remember how hard it was for her to trust us…” *cries again* Continuing in her tradition of bosslady mic-dropping wisdom, Hera gives it to him straight that the only way for Kanan to succeed in training Sabine is to just give her that Darksaber. He does that, and she’ll open up and face her demons on her own. Seriously OMG they wrote this so well I rewatched the scene again just now to make sure I was getting everything right. You go Captain Syndulla! 🙂
Safe to say Sabine was unprepared for what awaited her when she got back. Kanan finally handed her the Darksaber’s hilt, ready to start again with his student. Like Ezra and Fenn, I was quickly on the edge of my seat (and later on, unable to sit down). The swordfight is intense and really quite mesmerizing between Kanan and Sabine’s moves. Sabine handles her blade super-well for her first go at it, while Kanan absolutely wows me with his teaching skills and his connection to the Force. And every minute is a further reminder of the Darksaber’s incredible legacy. The weapon terrifying in the hands of Pre Vizsla and destructive in the hands of Maul now has the potential to heal in the hands of Sabine Wren. But all of this is merely practice, and Kanan can tell she’s still not putting her all into this. There’s more going on in this fight than just the swords. It’s Sabine fighting her hurt, her fear, her past, and the uncertainty of the future. Oh my gosh you guys when she started bearing her soul like that… my heart just shattered into pieces. You’re lying if you tell me you didn’t cry at the very least on the inside. I will say a lot of her story surprised me. (Forgive me I’m about to break up this feelyness for a second with some SW contemplating) I had utterly no idea that her family hurt her so bad. From all that Gar Saxon had mentioned in Imperial Supercommandos, I got a very different impression than what is actually the truth. I’d assumed, based on what he’d said about her mother, that because Mrs. Wren was with the Empire as of recent, that meant she hadn’t been supportive of it before, that as well as Sabine’s comment “…I doubt you gave her much choice”. But this new information seems to negate that, revealing her family had evidently always been pro-Empire, meaning perhaps that Mrs. Wren is actually higher-ranking Imperial, or even a Supercommando like Saxon. I literally watched that episode the other day in hopes of getting some facts straight and I’m still not totally certain of what her mother’s allegiances mean as versus the rest of her family and clan Vizsla. I suppose these are things we’ll find out soon enough. (next week maybe hopefully?) Either way, I’ve truly seen her story in a completely new light. And whatever happens, whatever she chooses, whatever her blood family and her clan think… her thicker-than-blood family will stand by her and with her. You know I had a totally different really deep thought that came to mind earlier, but I can’t remember it now. But I did come upon this really nifty thought: Fenn Rau came to fully join the Rebels’ cause because he respected Sabine’s loyalty to a family not her own. If the rest of clan Vizsla can see the fierce loyalty and heart she has for both her family and her people… I think they’ll find a reason to follow, with the blade, or without.
OK whew that was a lot of thoughts to organize there! Augh I just love this episode!! It’s so great just taking time away from the missions to just focus on these amazing amazing characters and their story at the heart of it all. We’ll talk some Freemakers next week and then the Transmissions’ll be back 😀 Now if you’ll excuse me there are some massive feels I’m going to need to work on recovering from…

Rebel Transmissions: Blood Sisters

Woot it’s Rebels time again! Yes recapping and commentating on this lovely episode will be a delight. So much excitement! So much feels! And of course, so much Sabine! So let’s cut short this rambling and start focusing on rambling on about Blood Sisters!
Note: Contains spoilers from Episode VI and Rebels episodes Fighter Flight and Blood Sisters

So it’s chore day for the Mini-Alliance, and Hera’s got a job for everybody. For Sabine it’s getting some super-important intel from an unknown shuttle passenger. Sounds easy enough right? Welp it’s indeed “a long way to Alderaan”. Heh that was one of my cornier bits but it works. Not to miss the fun, Ezra and Chopper manage to join as backup. Yep, a very long way to Alderaan. Especially when Ezra boy gets chatty. He casually brings up that she’s rather a lone anooba, at least, as far as it seems to him. No it’s not that she’s a loner Ezra, she’s just trying to keep away from you XP OK OK that’s not entirely true. Funny thing is I would’ve never pegged her for a loner. She seems pretty amiable, at least with her Ghost family. But in some ways it makes sense, after all, sometimes it’s just good to get away from the chaos of everyday Rebel life and do a little painting (or texting perhaps), have a little “me” time, y’know? I think Ezra might just scrambling for something to talk about. Because clearly asking her about her personal life is a good conversation starter! Haha I’ll be honest with you guys I’ve been hoping for a little one-sided Ezra-Sabine cute-awkwardness to surface again. This episode delivered nicely 🙂 So yeah Ezra just kept going, apparently still playing psychologist, when a painted mark on the wall catches Sabine’s attention. Something she very much recognizes. After her backup expresses some curiosity about it, she bypasses it and they move on to the rest of their mission, but don’t think that it won’t be important later. So basically they spend the whole afternoon commenting on the distance to Bail Organa’s homeworld and weirding people out as they go. Pff that one girl they both try dropping the code to… XD And then just when they thought they’d somehow missed the courier for good, a GOM droid responds to their code. Yay GOM droids! It’s nice to finally get a character out of one of these little guys! And I’m aware they might also be known as Gonk droids so please don’t chew me out for that hole in my droid knowledge. So it looks like they got what they came for, but it seems there’s one other person still hanging around the hangar… and she miiiiight be interested in EG-86 too. Ladies and gentlemen, Ketsu Onyo! Former friend of Sabine, current bounty hunter working for the Black Sun with intent to trade in Miss Wren for some cash. BTdubs this completely breaks girl code Ketsu. Ezra is smart and doesn’t get in between their standoff. Perhaps he needs to drop some psychology on these two? “So she left you for dead after you became bounty hunters… how does that make you feel?” 😛 And wow Sabine did some hunting not too long ago. Seems kinda crazy considering she might not’ve been much older than 15 or so, maybe even younger. But she is Sabine after all; something about that supercommando Mando blood. Yeah this sorta explains why she has paintings of Cad Bane and Embo on her wall… they’re not just cool guys with weapon skillz and big hats, they’re probably role models to her. And now half of you have gone to check Fighter Flight to see these drawings for yourself. Anyway, the tension in the room was cray thick as both girls kept their hands at their holsters. Ezra was about to start a therapy sesh when suddenly in walked a bunch of stormtroopers, not terribly happy a bunch of people are here after closing. Ketsu is completely ticked off that these losers broke the tension and starts shooting at them. And then Sabine’s shooting and everyone’s making a run for it. Despite the girls still aren’t on the same page right now, they can’t help but compliment each other’s blaster skills 🙂 With Ezra covering them with his blaster-saber, he directs Chop and EG to the nearest shuttle, and Sabine and Ezra follow shortly thereafter. The shuttle’s pilot droid is rather insulted with their barging in, but Chopper takes care of him pretty quickly. My that sounded dark didn’t it? DON’T PANIC THE PILOT’S OK HE JUST SHUT HIM OFF THAT’S ALL! Sabine wastes no time after that getting that shuttle airborne and outta there. Ezra covers his comrades the whole way, at least until blasterfire knocks him off the ship, anyway. He throws out an update to Hera on the situation as he makes his own exit outta there. As for Miss Onyo… she don’t give up so easily. The ‘troopers foolishly think they’ve got her, and then Ketsu whips out a deadly blade to match her blaster. She pretty much beats the living daylights out of those bucketheads. Yeah the armor don’t do the job it probably ought to, considering the way she whammed one in the jaw. And dang not just anyone would use a stormtrooper as a living shield! That’s a good move, right up there with Chewbacca’s pick-up-a-trooper-and-drop-it-on-another! Honestly I’m surprised any of them lived. But as we find out along the way, she’s not a heartless sort of girl. But with that out of the way, she effortlessly bounds her way to her ship and sets off after Sabine and Chopper. Yeah just when our heroes thought they had some breathing room… you can kiss that hyperdrive goodbye. Same for that hatch. Few situations in SW would terrify me more than being about to be sucked out into space. You can recover from a nexu bite, you can get a robotic arm if a lightsaber knocks one off, but you end up in space, especially minus the proper headgear, you’re done for, man. EG was the only thing keeping Sabine from that fate, and of course the button to turn on the shields was at an inconvenient distance. Yep that is definitely what I would call terrifying. It’s definitely even scarier when using the Force isn’t an option. She made it though. Just barely. Meanwhile Chopper was having a little space adventure. I’m always amazed he can get around as well as he does. And he has a little plan of his own…
*CoughIprobablyshould’vestarted newparagraphlongbeforenowcough* So Ketsu makes Sabine a final offer, to surrender the droid or the shuttle goes down. Neither have any interest in backing down though. And then Sabine spots Chopper on Ketsu’s ship, as in literally on her ship. And he happily goes about fiddling with its weapons systems, all “Let’s see… you don’t need this important-looking part do you?” *throws away* XD All the while Sabine keeps talking and keeps Miss Onyo distracted. Ketsu makes mention of her high status as a Black Sun hunter, and Sabine combats that with the fact they’re not the most reputable people to be employed by, considering, to put it lightly, they’re all a bunch of backstabbing jerks. Ketsu gets tired of the conversation after that and throws out the “surrender” option again. When that doesn’t work, she goes to the guns. And as you can figure, nothing happened. Except for Chopper laughing as he holds a dismembered weapons array in his clutches. Nicely done Mr. Chop 😀 Nicely. Done. With that, Sabine’s out with Chopper following closely behind. Unfortunately not closely enough though, ’cause that’s when Ketsu grabs him in her tractor beam. EG-86 is all “NOOOOOOO CHOPPERRRRRR!!”, as I’m sure we all were at that moment. Chop can only cover his optical sensors as he draws closer and closer to Ketsu’s grasp. Looks like Sabine’s gotta turn around and try for a new deal. Also, Chopper’s ninja skills are unparalleled. His form when Ketsu first faces him is pretty impressive… up until she throws out that blade anyway. So the girls meet in the middle in a docking ramp between ships, and Sabine has no intention to take any offers on EG. In fact, Sabine’s not making any offers at all. Not for any kind of extra cash or anything. Ketsu remains unimpressed, as she sees little merit in her Rebelling or in some loyal droid. And then Sabine just out-and-out says “I forgive you”. That is literally one of the most noble things I’ve ever seen. She forgives her for that incident from the last time they hung out, and she forgives her for what she’s doing now. And above all, she’s offering her old friend a new start. Mic drop. Ketsu has no idea how to respond to that, but she seems rather floored. And then a few Imperials interrupted what could’ve been a peaceful resolution. Apparently they haven’t forgotten that Sabine kinda stole that shuttle. But hey, nothing better to bond over than fighting the same enemy, right? And like that, these two severely awesome ladies are friends again. Though yeah admittedly they are in a bit of a pickle… especially considering Ketsu’s got no firepower. I love the subtle huff Chopper gets into on that comment 🙂 But Miss Wren has a plan, and it involves possibly blowing up the shuttle. And thankfully, Ketsu and Sabine love explosives the way some teen girls love shoes… never can have enough of ’em! 😀 Anyone else getting friendship feels right now? True they may not’ve always had each other’s best interests (OK mostly on Ketsu’s part), but it’s crystal clear they get each other, and you can see why they became friends to start with, so I think becoming BFFs again, even after all that crud, is entirely possible. Anyway Sabine plants more than a few detonators and decides to let the pilot droid have most of the conversation with the Imperials. Hehe the little guy seems a bit panicky. I’m pretty sure RX would’ve handled this a bit more smoothly had he been piloting. And then the Imps blast the ramp while Sabine’s in there and it throws her back into the shuttle and knocks her out! Ketsu risks everything to save her friend as the threat of both Imperials and their own firepower come ever closer. They make it back on the ship just in time, and just like that the Imperials get a face full of massive explosion! And with them distracted, our heroes’ next stop is hyperspace! YUS all the teamwork all the friendship!! And then it’s to Alderaan to deliver EG-86! Oh, and they happen to be met by R2-D2! Artoo’s all “Well you people sure took your time” to which Chopper’s like “NBD you can thank us later” and they left in a huff, clearly glad to be out of each other’s domes. Heh heh and you thought Threepio was tough to get along with… 😛
So the girls arrive back on Guerell shortly thereafter. Hera congratulates them both for the success of the mission. And Ketsu seems genuinely appreciative of the thanks. Ezra, now gone from psychologist back to complete teenage guy, reintroduces himself. “Yessss she’s told me all about you…” “Good things right?” Pfff Sabine shoots him such a look XD No I’m thinking Sabine probably referred to him as the “helmet-collecting dork who shoots well and flirts badly” XP Oh and the whole thing where she wanted a moment to say goodbye to her friend and Ezra completely misunderstood that? So very awkward but utterly delightful. Hehe Ketsu seemed to enjoy the awkwardness as much as I do 🙂 So some thanks were in order as was a solid sisterly handshake. And Sabine did offer up that if Ketsu ever wanted to lend a hand they’d be happy to have her. Ketsu doesn’t make any promises per se, but I think it’s safe to say the next time we see her, she’ll be all there for her BFF 🙂
And then as the end credits started rolling I yelled triumphantly “FRIENDSHIP!” to no one in particular. Ahh this episode makes me so happy! It’s just too wonderful seeing our heroes’ worlds expanding and seeing more tiny glimpses of their pasts. So I hope my wonderful American readers have a great Thanksgiving and I will see you next week for the next episode!

Uncovering The Lost Missions: An Old Friend

The next episode of The Lost Missions was an absolute breath of fresh air after all of the intensity of the last four episodes, doesn’t mean that they weren’t awesome, but it’s always good to have a few lighter-hearted episodes here and there, and An Old Friend majorly delivered. It’s a perfect Star Warsian blend — intrigue, excitement, awkward moments, a couple of laughs, and the always-epic Embo! (I hope I didn’t just go and spoil the episode before adding the spoiler warning… but if you haven’t seen this episode yet, why would you be reading this blog anyway??) Hard to get much better than that, right?! 😀 So onward we go as we dive into a closer look at opener of the next Lost Missions storyline!
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode III and TCW Episodes Senate Spy, Bounty Hunters, Pursuit of Peace, Crisis On Naboo and An Old Friend

(Original screencap credit: the official Star Wars Youtube)

So as we open up, I would try to re-explain the scenario in layman’s terms, but some days, even I get confused over SW politics! I suppose the easiest way to put it is that:
– The war is draining planets of money
– The Banking Clan controls the money
– And the awesome Padme’s coming to their big banking planet Skipio (probably spelled wrong) to get a loan to help these poor planets.
And here come the people who get SWian politics better than I do, yelling at their computers at all I just said wrong. Well, this is a blog partially for SW fans who are learning, give me a break! But yeah, that’s the gist of it. And as we SW fans know, we would never catch Padme doing anything boring; her senatorial work usually results in a lot of excitingness, intrigue, and more often than not some aggressive negotiations 🙂 Of course, I’m sure she was hoping today’d be a bit more of a normal day. Just gonna chat with the lanky Banking Clan dudes and as a result, help a lot of people! How hard could it be? Welp, she most certainly didn’t expect that their “special representative” she’d be working with would be a fellow named Rush Clovis… *sings a line of Taylor Swift’s I Knew You Were Trouble* If you recall, Clovis is tall, dark, and Separatist. He funded that infamous droid factory a few seasons back and evidently is an ex-boyfriend of Senator Amidala’s… anddd he’s still got it bad for her (and also doesn’t understand the meaning of “strong passwords”; how is it that he hasn’t had his identity stolen??). You may also remember how the last time we saw the guy Padme nearly died trying to get important info out of him and his pack of Seps. So naturally Padme’s like “Um, no. Not working with him.” and exits stage right. But well… the boy doesn’t give up easy. He does what no smart guy would ever do when trying to help out an ex… he sneaks through her bedroom window. I literally was kinda shocked at that move, I mean, at least he intended no harm, but it would’ve scared me to pieces! But it’s easy to be a tad more chill when you have a blaster. Clovis has to act quickly and explains that they’re both kinda majorly in trouble. The Banking Clan isn’t exactly swimming in moola like they’d like everyone to believe; they’re well, bankrupt. Which isn’t good when you were sort of trying to help people and these lanky guys aren’t really helping anybody but themselves. And since Clovis knows this, he’s kinda almost killed by a bounty hunter just talking to her. Padme’s not one to trust turncoats like him and raises an eyebrow on his claims, but he’s a persistent little booger, and tells her that the evidence is in the vault computer, and if she can grab it, the two of them can expose the Clan’s doings for reals. After his leaving, she gives the Supreme Chancellor a call and tells him what she now knows. The big cheese’s advice is to “trust an old friend” and get the dirt on the Bankers. IDK man, but he’s still giving me the creeps a bit… he seems to really know something… and I’m rather afraid to find out. But Padme decides she’ll do what she’s gotta do, and she’s awesome that way. The next day, she asks to see the vault, and at their refusal, questions what the Bankers have to hide. Of course, they can’t let her assume that, and first thing in the morning, she’ll get to see the inside of the vault. And until then, the two have some planning to do…
On another side of town (read: planet), the senator, her handmaiden Tekla, and her temporary compadre have gathered at Clovis’s place to plan. Again, it sounds simple enough: Padme gets in the vault, Clovis sets up an explosive on the city’s power converter, the explosion causes major confusion, and in the midst of that, Padme can grab the info that proves the Banking Clan’s profiteering. Now, I know this diverts from the discussion at hand, but anybody else wonder what the climate of Skipio actually is? It’s covered in snow and we can sometimes see our heroes’ breaths, but nobody’s exactly bundled up, either… the weather of SWian planets is a fascinating area of interest to me, because it’s usually not noticeable unless it’s a really hot planet or a really cold planet. Either way, Clovis has a fire going in his cool little fireplace. Of course, is that just because it’s cold or could “setting the mood” have something to do with it? Ew. But you know, you have to feel kinda bad for Clovis sometimes… he has no idea Padme’s in any other relationship. And the last time they saw each other, she was faking an interest in him, and now she makes clear her complete dislike of him. It’s a good thing in a way that Padme has her near-death last time around as an excuse to keep the boy at a distance. Poor guy really can’t shake that crush, can he? You can kinda tell in the way he looks at her, how he’s still sorta hopeful but still pretty bummed because he can tell she’s not feeling similarly. And who knows how close they actually were pre-Anakin? I don’t typically let my mind wander in that direction because I love Anakin and Padme’s thing so much, but these episodes beg some questions.
At the crack of dawn the next morning, Padme joins some of the Bankers on the as-promised tour of the vault. Can we pause for a minute and talk about the coolness of the vault? Aside from its huge cool doors, the interior is so practically glowing gold! It’s so so awesome! It’s funny to think that I’d never expected to see a bank in TCW, but whaddyaknow? 🙂 But for the plan to work, Clovis has to casually leave the scene, and since he’s a representative, he sort of, well, can’t. Thankfully though, he has himself a backup plan… Tekla.
Tekla doesn’t get a lot of screentime in the TCW series, but her role is always important when she is on-screen. She’s awesome in a very subtle way (remember her role in Season 3’s Pursuit Of Peace?), and now she’s proving her awesome in a much bolder manner, becoming a huge part of the plan as she walks through the dark city streets with a detonator. Once Tekla’d placed the detonator right on the converter where it needed to be, her job was done. Oh but as you know “simple is never simple”; Embo was watching, and with a probe droid… and his laser crossbow thing. His (unfortunately for us) well-aimed shot could not, however, keep the detonator from doing its job, and KABOOM it goes and all the lights go out — including the ones in the vault a few blocks away. Because of Tekla’s bravery and sacrifice, Padme has a chance to reveal the truth and use her little USB thing to get the proof in the Banking Clan pudding (I just realized that made no sense whatsoever, but I’m trying, people…). Once she and the Bankers get out, the Senator rocks her acting skills like a boss and shows disdain for their lousy electrical upkeep. It looks like a win for Clovis and Padme, as they now hold the truth in their hands, but well… I guess the Banking Clan is smarter than we thought, and they enter and arrest Senator Amidala without question. Nuts.
A few days later, enter in Padme’s key out: her shining Jedi Knight, Anakin. And he brought R2-D2 along, too. In the privacy of her cell, Padme tries to explain the situation at hand, but the minute she mentions Clovis… Anakin completely freaks out. “What does that loser have to do with any of this?! And why are you… trusting him?!”. Now, I admit I did laugh at some of this conversation on a second viewing, I think mostly just because a part of me can’t believe how all-too-evidently jealous Anakin is, like a overly worrisome wife almost! It’s almost funny. But dang man, I hope he wasn’t serious about the whole “maybe I should just leave you here” bit! It’s interesting, I mean, you’d think being married for like, what, three years, he’d trust her better than anyone. And I started wondering, is it possible to be so overprotective of someone you love that you’d start distrusting them? Obviously, we all know Padme is pretty much everything to him now, and he clearly is willing to do anything for her (like say, join the Dark Side and junk to potentially save her). But you know, I thought about it like with an overprotective parent and a kid in some ways; the parent is so bent on protecting their kid that they don’t trust they’ll be OK on their own because they’re so afraid of something happening to them (if you’ve ever seen Finding Nemo you might be able to see this more clearly). I think Anakin does trust that she can handle herself, but he obviously has some worries about her hanging out with an ex-boyfriend for fear that he could lose her. Perhaps that’s not entirely abnormal for those in relationships to feel like that about their significant other’s old relationships, but Anakin’s seriously not happy about it one bit. So… I think it’s safe to say he has some trust issues, somehow, in favor of keeping Padme alive and with him forever. Which eventually trickles down into the events of Episode III where Anakin’s trust in her dwindles when she makes it clear she’s no fan of his new Empire. But for now, Padme manages to calm Anakin a bit and really get him to understand the high stakes beyond just this dumb awkward love triangle. He agrees to help, but for her, not for the slicked-back Sep she’s working with. Their first stop is at Clovis’s residence, and he doesn’t seem to be anywhere (and Anakin not-helpingly interjects “Perhaps they found what they were looking for and that’s why he’s gone… we can only hope!” 😆 ). But turns out Clovis was just in hiding. And oh boy, when coming face-to-face with each other again, Anakin and Rush bring out the claws! “I’m not giving this information to some pilot!“, “I’m a Jedi Knight and I can help you if you do what I want you to!”.
So much for this being more about exposing the Banking Clan than about the awkward love triangle. But nothing brings people together like somebody shooting at you with a laser crossbow; enter Embo, one of my fave bounty hunters, and his loyal anuba (I think that’s what he is, but I’m probably wrong). It must be kind of weird for Anakin to be on the run from him, considering the last time they hung out, Anakin and Embo were helping train a bunch of Felucian farmers to fight! OK, so maybe there was also that time when Embo was part of the gang attacking Palpatine, but I really can’t hold that against him. Other than that, this is probably the first time I’ve seen Embo working for the bad guys (and ironically the same guy he nearly helped kill… weird, huh?), and it’s another reminder that bounty hunters are willing to do whatever puts bread on the table. So there they were; Anakin, Padme, and Clovis making a run for it, and the boys still have some tension going on. It’s funny, I guess Clovis is now seeing Anakin as potential competition (perhaps understandably; it’s hard to have something on a pretty decent-looking young Jedi). And Padme’s all “Boys! Boys! Stop fighting over meh!” XD Also yeah, they were making a run for it on a small ship on the snowy slopes around Clovis’s place while Embo kept up on his sled/hat with his canine companion at his side (can I just say I really really want that hat?). Who needs the Winter Olympics when you’ve got this, right?! Haha. And escaping from a bounty hunter of his level of awesomeness is no small feat. Padme’s driving, Anakin’s lightsabering back, and Clovis is kinda looking lost in the middle of the whole thing. Interestingly, I couldn’t help but observe that both Anakin and Clovis fit well into the two-guys-fighting-over-one-girl scenario. When Padme gets grazed by laserfire, Clovis rushes to her side to make sure she’s OK while Anakin uses the Force and flings Embo a mile away; this sorta makes Clovis the “sensitive nice guy” and Anakin the “macho bad boy” in the game. In any other show or movie I’d be rooting for the sensitive one, but eh, not so much considering the so-called macho one already won to begin with (and he’s wayyy awesomer). After a number of close calls, the good guys and the bad guys have officially run out of road, and just as our heroes go flying off the mountainside, Artoo shows up with the ship and saves the day! Embo’s left on the cliff with his anuba sweetly fetching his hat for him (Sue me, I think his dog’s cute! Especially when, at the beginning, he gave his master the probe droid like it was a tennis ball X3 ), but as Embo finds out in a quick call from Darth Sidious, his job’s done, and Sidious is going to do the rest of the job himself. So… does that mean that Anakin, Padme, Artoo, and Clovis didn’t get away completely scot-free after all?? Uh-oh…
So yeah, this episode was awesome! So much excitement and intrigue with a perfect little dash of levity, and Embo, of course 🙂 Where things go from here, we can only imagine! Though I have a feeling it’ll be pretty awesome! Until next post…
