Rebel Transmissions: Family Reunion – And Farewell

Here it is. The very last Rebel Transmission on Padawanline.
*Dramatic pause*
OK so that’s a little too dramatic. I highly doubt this will be the last time I talk about Rebels on the blog, just the last time I’ll do it in this format.
Whoo boy there’s a lot to talk about on this one. A lot. But it’s all stuff that has been on my mind for well over a month now, so hopefully I’ll be able to stir up some satisfying discussion for you all on this last Transmission. Get comfy, this is gonna be a long one…

Contains spoilers from Episode III, Episode VI, Episode VII, Episode VIII, TCW episode Point Of No Return, and much of Star Wars Rebels, including Family Reunion – And Farewell.

From start to finish, this is a story about family. Not just this episode, but every episode these last four seasons.
And we’re not just talking the dictionary definition of family, of people related by flesh and blood. We’re talking about what I’ve come to term as “thicker-than-blood”: friends who are basically family, bonds that far exceed any shared DNA. SWR painted the most beautiful picture of this idea over the course of the series that I’d never really seen anything quite like before.

At the very beginning of it all, Ezra was separated from his birth family. He wasn’t looking for anyone to fill that void, especially not a group of individuals that, like his imprisoned parents, Rebelled on a daily basis. But one day, the boy was called to be part of something more. In doing so, he found a dad, a mom, a brother, a sister, and a pet droid. And through this new family, values instilled in him by his birth parents would grow from a spark to a raging wildfire, making him the selfless, determined-to-help-others-at-any-personal-cost young man he is today. I know I’ve talked about this before, but frankly, it’s worth saying over and over again. Ezra Bridger’s journey is truly amazing. And watching the beginning again stirred up so so many memories, I didn’t have a choice but to write this paragraph.

Yes, watching Ezra talking to the holo-portrait of his parents melted my heart in all the ways, but to realize how final it all sounded… that concerned me. “Hold on! We’re not seriously going to lose Ezra, right?? We can’t! It’s hard enough losing Kanan! I’M NOT READY!!”
I’d spent so long pulling for the Ghost family Jedi to make it somehow despite Yoda’s deathbed claims, that watching Kanan go really hit me hard out of left field. So I was clinging pretty darn hard on the technicality that since Ezra was not an official Jedi, so he could make it.
But somehow, it wasn’t as hard to watch Ez go as I thought it would be. Not just because they gave us the inkling of hope that he may still be alive, but because his act of self-sacrifice was so noble and so powerful. And it was even more meaningful when I remembered he was doing what Kanan taught him in that last lesson. Wow. The end of his story (for now) was the best it possibly could have been. A fitting last chapter to really show just how far he’s come from that first spark of rebellion ❤

You know, I had a neat revelation after watching this the first time. It's easy to see that Hera is what ultimately brought the Ghost family together. She’s in the business, it seems, of pulling together the most broken, flawed people and turning them into heroes. Just look what she did with a noncommittal, bitter ex-Jedi, an old, broken astromech, a guilt-ridden, hopeless warrior, a disgraced, unjustly-accused Mandalorian, and a self-serving street kid! And from there, this family she brought together helped expand that family as they did the same thing — making real heroes out of often the galaxy’s lowest of the low. Forgotten, cast-aside clone troopers became leaders again. A crusty pirate with no crew found new purpose and new friends. A high-and-mighty ISBN agent gave up all his prestige to do the right thing. A young bounty hunter chose to do something with far greater reward than money. A dishonest dealer who caused a lot of trouble in the past stepped up to the cause. A jaded former governor found a new mission. Even seemingly-ordinary kids like Jai and Mart were brought into this family of heroes. And I don’t know why Melch keeps getting involved, but I’m hoping it’s because all this selflessness is contagious 🙂 And it all started with Hera, not just because of her natural-born leadership, but because she saw something in all of them that made them family, somehow.
This might not be anything new, but it’s just such a cool thing to think about and it’s just another thing so meaningful about this finale — that we get to spend it with just about all the family :3

Like I talked about some last episode, all the teamwork in the room is just amazing. We have the most unconventional set of Rebels working together and they’re just owning it! It’s more than I ever expected to see in the finale, and it continues to blow my mind and gives me all the feels. And it’s also so fun watching the most mismatched of teams working together amidst the varying levels of personality clashes, like with the oh-so-precise-and-well-planned Kallus stuck with the more action-oriented, blast-down-the-doors wild cards Gregor and Zeb. “He’s crazy!” “BUT IT WAS YOUR PLAN!” Delightful!
But on that note, yes, I will miss Gregor something awful. I’ve been holding my breath, unsure of what would become of all these once-lost commanders for years now, not wanting to see another brother down, but knowing it was well-likely to happen. But Gregor did good. I thought we’d lost him ages ago, so getting to spend the time with him that we did was special no matter what.

And wow was Thrawn on his A-game today. Like, he was honestly as cool, calculating, and downright cruel to me as he’s ever been this series. I mean seriously some of what he did got me wincing for all the good people left in the galaxy. But at the same time, his confidence and well-thought-out plans never ceased to impress. Again, I really have to thank Lucasfilm for putting the Grand Admiral in the canon and in this series. I’m sure the original novels are solid, but having so little knowledge of that era of books, including him inside of a series I was already very familiar with was the perfect way to meet him. His comeuppance was masterful, but I appreciate they chose to leave it open what ultimately happens to him… either way, Grand Admiral Thrawn was a truly awesome adversary and I definitely look forward to digging into his story some more later. *Sighs because she still has so many novels to catch up on* *But smiles because what a great problem to have!*

Seeing Palpatine again brought the best kind of intrigue for me. I loved this revelation that the Emperor presents himself much as he appeared in the years past. I guess I’d figured people always saw him in that dark cloak, like in Episode III, but this makes so much more sense! Once again, he’s doing a really solid job playing the galaxy like a card. Who would doubt such a finely-dressed, kindly politician? But that’s exactly what he wants you to think! It’s genius! Terrifyingly genius! And then we watch, eyes wide, as the Emperor offers Ezra a family reunion on a silver platter. I don’t know about you, but I could almost physically feel the pain of Ezra’s inner battle. It’s the ultimate temptation, to abandon everything and regain a peaceful life like he had before. And though we know Ezra has a solid sense of right and wrong… we also know Sidious is a master at pulling lightsiders over to the dark. SO MUCH TENSION! SO MANY EMOTIONS! I COULDN’T BREATHE!! DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED WHEN PALPATINE UNDID EZRA’S CUFFS! AND THEN WHEN EZRA UNLOCKED THE GATEWAY AND I WAS ALL “OMG WHAT ARE YOU DOING??”!! OH MAN!
But there are few greater moments in Star Wars than when a hero wins this battle with himself, overcomes temptation, and defies the darkness.
Couldn’t applaud enough.
Also those totally-different red guards were so epic… or are they normal red guards with different armor? Need to read up more on them!

I definitely need to talk about Sabine and Ezra, guys. I remember when the series first began and what I liked most about them was that one-sided-crush dynamic. Every one of Ezra’s failed flirts and every one of Sabine’s sarcastic replies got me laughing hard. But their relationship has become so so much more since then, and not in the ways I might’ve assumed. In the last few seasons, we’ve watched them go from a slightly-lopsided sorta-friendship to a concrete bond of trust, honesty, and faith in each other. I’ve said this before but it’s worth repeating. They’ve stood alongside each other in their darkest moments, fought impossible odds together, and they just get each other. It’s astounding how far they’ve come. Every moment of this understanding and shared trust, whether spoken or unspoken, speaks incredible volumes, and it could not be more perfect. And the fact that Sabine ultimately (if my understanding’s correct) puts aside her own homeworld and her place in the Alliance to protect Lothal for years? This is as real a friendship as it gets. Some days I can’t believe how much they’ve both grown up, how far they’ve come! I just love them, and who they truly are together — something far more meaningful than just a teenage crush. Something that’s nothing short of rock-solid. Something that I just have to describe as powerful.
But all the same… I couldn’t help but smile when Sabine quietly caressed his portrait, making me wonder if maybe, just maybe, the feeling’s mutual now… :3

Random note, but one of my favorite bits of animation in the whole episode is watching Mart trying to see over Zeb and Kallus’ shoulders XD I can relate, Mart! #ShortPeopleUnite! Except he’ll probably grow out of it, of course… but, still!

Once the Ghost headed off into the sunset, I wasn’t expecting anything but the credits.
Instead, they gave me so much more — a new hope for Kallus, a new chapter for Hera, and a new mission for Sabine and Ahsoka! And also the fact Rex made it to VI which was obviously so epicly cool. I like that none of these stories are really the “end” of their stories, each of them are just an important moment for each of them, and a way to wrap up their arcs in SWR nicely. Let’s dig into those first three a little further, OK?

Zeb’s impossibly kind gesture to Kallus just wows me. All that time ago, he helped spur the Agent to change his ways, and he could’ve stopped there. But instead, not only does Zeb forgive his once-mortal enemy, he says “Guess what? You’re one of us!” Before this, I had never considered how much Kallus might still be carrying with him, the belief that he’d helped in the purging of an entire people. So what a gift this is, to know there’s still hope, and that he is entirely forgiven! I like to think that, in Ezra’s absence, that Zeb found a new friend in Kallus. Likely not quite the same level of friendship, but one that still maintains an unshakable loyalty. Leave it to Star Wars to paint such an amazing image of forgiveness and hope, and the truth that real friendships can come from anywhere 🙂 As one of my fave songs goes: When I look into the face / of my enemy / I see my / brother!

I’d spent plenty of time over the last couple years thinking “I could totally see Hera legally-adopting kids after the war’s over.” OK granted a lot of that was me liking the idea of Hera adopting the Freemakers, but still, it wasn’t hard to imagine. So when I Saw the adorable green bean in her copilot’s seat… I SQUEE-ED SO HARD! General Syndulla looks so in her element, flying with little Jason (hopefully I spelled it right) by her side! Of course, now I really want to see Jason join Rowan on some Freemaker Adventures… but I’ll take any story about Hera and her boy I can get 😀 What a truly perfect way to cap off her story!

And I really thought we’d reached the end of Ahsoka’s story. It was enough to know she’d survived the duel with Vader. But then… there she stood, ready to fulfill her promise to find Ezra. I love her new look, and not just because it has a bit of a Gandalf-feel to it, but it begs so so many questions! My assumption is she’s become a priestess of sorts for a new branch of Forcewielders apart from Jedi and Sith. But if she is, what does that mean later on for Luke and his attempts to rebuild the Jedi? What does it mean for Rey, trying to find her place in the Force? Or does this supposed new sect of Ahsoka’s even make it that far in the future? Or maybe it just took 30-odd years for Ahsoka and Sabine to find Ezra and then they show up in the middle of Episode IX all “Whoa what happened while we were gone??”. Honestly, I’d be totally up for something like that!
But wherever they go from here, they go with hope. The kind of hope that can save the galaxy.. and actually did

I've got so many feels I don't know what to do with them. What an amazing journey it's been! But thank you so much for reading this.
Thank you for reading all these Rebel Transmissions over the years.

And this all comes around the time my blog just turned five years old, so even more thanks for reading this blog, for fanboying/fangirling alongside me, and for making Padawanline what it is today! Just.. thank you!

The Long-Overdue Resistance Rises Post

When brainstorming possible posts to write this weekend, I realized I’d never taken the time to appreciate Lego’s The Resistance Rises shorts. I am remedying that today, because these are super-fun, super-clever, and even know how to bring some serious feels as we get to revisit the Force Awakens era in a whole new way! Let me share some of my favorite things about them as we watch.
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode VII

POE TO THE RESCUE

The first of the shorts offers a really nice look at the (sort of) average daily life for the Resistance and the First Order before VII’s events. Starkiller Base has yet to make its first appearance, but Captain Phasma and Kylo Ren are still coming up with new ways to make things difficult for their enemies. But when you’ve got the crack team of Poe, Threepio, and BB-8 on your tail, the odds are not something you wanna hear 🙂

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– Nice hearing Tom Kane’s narrator voice at a different time and place in the SW universe!
– Ackbar is a serious boss you guys. I don’t know how old he is, but he sure hasn’t slowed down! Wow did anyone else sort of just remember that he’s been through the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War and now all this stuff with the First Order vs. the Resistance? It’s almost unreal how much of Star Wars history he’s been involved in! Major respect points.
– (Mostly) acid rain-proof umbrellas. A must for any Resistance pilot! How did Threepio get out there though?? For an old droid, he gets himself into a lot of trouble! #Understatement
– Threepio, I think you may be the first person in the world to look at BB-8 and not be excited. But I guess since Artoo’s been out of commission a while, it’s easy to see how Threepio might’ve been bummed out those beeps and chirps were from a different astromech. Aww that just made me a shed a tear…
– Poe and Threepio’s dynamic is hilarious. I could seriously use more of these guys’ shenanigans in my life. The ace pilot and his general’s very-particular protocol droid! Comedy gold!
– Hey Threeps, for what it’s worth, I’d like to hear the story of that new arm of yours. I probably will once I start going through all those comics I’m severely overdue on reading. Until then, maybe R0-GR can help you write your autobiography! 🙂
– That graycoat really should’ve known better than to stand underneath a troop transport’s door #Fail #ButWhatAGloriousFailTho The fact his head got attached to the bottom of the door Lego-style made it all the funnier XD
– Boy they had a lot of prisoners. What’d they have against a wampa and a jawa?? Who knows? Probably Kylo Ren’s just annoyed by everything XP
– “Captain Phasma… you have failed me for the first time. Which is… weird. That’s never happened!” Love that he’s totally channeling his grandpa-senpai again. Also mad props to whoever’s voicing him. I wish these things had credits ’cause if I didn’t know better I’d think it was Adam Driver himself!
POE’S X-WINGGGGG GUYS. IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE I WATCHED THIS SHORT SO I FORGOT IT WAS IN THERE AND NOW I’M POSITIVELY GIDDY.

REY STRIKES BACK

Everyday life on Jakku looks to be nothing short of unforgiving and miserable. Episode VII already made that clear, but this short certainly drives the point home again. But Rey ain’t takin’ crud from no one today. Not from Plutt, not from Plutt’s cronies, and certainly not from any space cacti! I love her drive, determination, and outright sass in this short, as well as her impressive building skillz, as she takes on every blow this desolate world can deal her. There’s a reason she’s made it this long out here.

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– “Nothing can flourish there, but a young scavenger named REY is certainly trying….” well-said, Mr. Kane!
– I gotta say, I think my favorite thing about this short is Kevin, Unkar Plutt’s precious pet space cactus and only friend. I just think about it and I die laughing. It’s good to know the guy has a soft spot for something besides money! Also, whenever I want to work on my Rey impression, “‘Kevin’? You gave your plant a name?”, is my go-to XD It’s all just so beautifully hilarious and perfectly Lego.
– Suddenly, Twilight remembers she has named plants before and realizes she’s the pot calling the kettle “black”.
– I love her speeder is like a bucking bronco with those thugs! Don’t mess with her fierce, noble steed!
– Guys! Throwing Lego bricks around is dangerous! Do you know how much those things hurt when their corners hit your skin?! Or when you step on one?! Or when you get your hair caught between them?! Things just got realllllll…
– Random thought: if it weren’t for the fact Luke’s going to be training her, I bet Rowan Freemaker would take her on as his apprentice. Girl can masterbuild!
HOLY MOS EISLEY, THAT’S THE GHOST OUT THERE. WITH MODIFICATIONS. I THINK. I COULD BE WRONG. BUT THIS IS CANON TO ME NOW. Someone from the original crew better be flying it though. I doubt General Syndulla would let some schnook steal it. Goodness this just got me thinkin’ on the Rebs’ futures something fierce. *Gets lost in thought for ten minutes pondering what fate may befall the Rebels in their last season* It could just be another ship of the same variety, but… you have to wonder.

HUNTING FOR HAN

Maz’s Castle looks like a fun place, even with its sometimes-frightening and untrustworthy clientele. Perhaps because its owner is so wise and welcoming and noble. But as we see in this short, for all the crazy crowds it attracts, there are always a few genuine souls who come through the Castle’s doors…

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– You guys ever wonder where Maz finds this stuff? Avid eBayer I guess. And I’m sure having a professional career as a pirate helps you know where to find certain things…
– Knowing how this ends, why would anyone slap a “poisonous” sticker on a suitcase containing musical instruments? Well I guess Bala Tik’s got a reputation to keep. Bartering something so non-lethal would get a laugh out of the rest of the galaxy’s common criminals. That, or maybe certain species are actually negatively effected by the sounds of these space-saxophones, like maybe it makes their heads explode or something. Hmm…
– The “silver fox” comment cracked me up beyond belief. But it’s true… all of it!
– You have to wonder though if all of these incidents were really Han’s fault. I mean, sure he’s not doing the best with his life right now but it doesn’t mean he’s a complete scoundrel! Everyone’s just jealous ’cause they know they will never age that well XP
– “I heard Greedo shot first!” “THEM’S FIGHTIN’ WORDS!!” Oh boy, this again…? Guys. There are far more interesting debates in the world of Star Wars than that old argument.
– Wow can Maz use that lightsaber! She may have been saving it for someone special to find it someday, but it sure has its uses in the meantime!
– And aw yay Lando!! I love so much that, though he and Han seem to have gone different ways over the course of their lives, Lando still always has his buddy’s back. It gives me many feels. Wonder what the old smoothie’s been up to though? Y’know what, I bet he manages that casino Finn and Rose are gonna go on a mission to in VIII. That would be truly awesome. Either way, watching him play the space-sax with Maz Kanata is so sweet and gives me hope that Lando Calrissian’s doin’ all right, wherever in the galaxy he is 🙂

THE TROUBLE WITH RATHTARS

Possibly my favorite short in the bunch, we get to see an average everyday for Han and Chewie and the dangers of their recent business ventures, as well as a softer side to one of my favorite SW monsters.

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– But why did Chewie let the rathtars out to begin with?? Did he feel sorry for them? I could see Chewbacca having some compassion on the poor giant squishy balls of death.
– OK and seriously, despite they’re being pursued by TIEs and they’ve got loose rathtars on board, Han is still handling this clunky ship like a dream.
– “That’s Dooku, Kitster, Lobot”??? Wizard code, bro XD
– Also Han rolling the window down is just so ludicrously hilarious, like OMG that’s so good. I’m convinced this freighter might’ve been rebuilt with some earth-made spare parts. It’s got side-view mirrors, seatbelts (evidently), and brakes! I’m pretty sure none of those things are normal, but hey spare parts are spare parts.
– Chewie lullabying the rathtars to sleep is literally too precious! I’ve always loved the rathtars, as they made a big impression on me as the first SW monster I saw on the big screen, but this short made me love them even more, ’cause really they’re just giant squishy sweethearts :3
– Even if they can and will eat your face any other chance they get.

ATTACK OF THE CONSCIENCE

A surprisingly deep little finale, we get a sense as to where Finn came from and the friends he’d made, and why it wasn’t just that first attack on Jakku that changed his mind on his stormtrooping career.

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– WHOA THEY STILL HAVE AT-ATS! Do you think they finally figured out how to make ’em Jedi-proof?
– I like this concept of ‘trooper training looking like middle school soccer practice XD
– Wait. So they only fight fake Rebels, but with real detonators?? *Shoots a disapproving look at Phasma*
– I think the voice of Finn is also the voice of Zander Freemaker, and he’s doing awesome at it.
– “That’s Kylo Ren! He’s awesome!” “I know! He threatened to have me destroyed once!” “…WHAT?” Um yeah, this really ain’t soccer practice, FN-2187.
– I like that every time Finn starts questioning the plan, he lifts his helmet up, which we know is a major stormtrooper no-no. I’m sure the First Order taught the ‘troopers that they’re the good guys and everything they’re doing is for peace ultimately, but I’m glad that somehow, Finn has a broader moral compass that’s allowing him to see attacking a village as questionable. Guess he was out sick that one day they had the seminar on jerkiness.
– And boy… when you think about what’s about to happen from here… OH YOU POOR CHILD. YOU POOR, POOR CHILD. *Cries for Finn and his friend, too*
– But despite all the pain about to go down, Captain Phasma’s not wrong when she remarks “…your destiny awaits.”

So yeah aren’t those just great? I do so love me some Lego Star Wars! And since I haven’t discussed The Force Awakens as much I’dve like to, I’m glad I could immerse myself in this era again and hopefully start some interesting conversations as we get excited for the next chapter in this beautiful saga in only six more months!

The Art Of The Star Wars Graphic Tee

So it’s safe to say that graphic tees make up the majority of my wardrobe. I love the style’s versatility and the infinite number of designs you can find, especially when it comes to fandom-related ones. It’s probably not surprising to say that I own more Star Wars shirts than any other fandom. Thinking on this fact, I found I really wanted to write about the art of my Star Wars shirts and how the right design can speak volumes. And also give the artists some serious credit where credit is due, because I love these tees so much :3
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Episode VI

My very first Star Wars tee was this Olly Moss piece from Hot Topic. There are many reasons this Return Of The Jedi one caught my eye; the dramatic, simple-but-not-really-simple design, the contrast of dark and light, that rich, swoon-worthy shade of teal-green… but what I love most about it is that it captures both the excitement of the battle of Endor and the beauty of Vader’s redemption. An AT-ST clomps around beneath the trees as silhouetted ewoks watch from above. But when you zoom out of the scenery, you realize the gnarled branches form the Darth’s menacing helmet. I love also that it’s a shirt celebrating Episode VI, which holds a special place in my heart partly because my first viewing of the film helped further my growing love of the series as a whole. And of course, I’ll always argue that the movie needs more love, so wearing this one is a great way to make clear to the world that I love all chapters of the Original Trilogy equally 🙂 As I said on an old tumblr post, Olly Moss is awesomesauce!

When I spotted this one at Walmart, I knew it was definitely for me. I’m pretty short, but Yoda never fails to remind me that “size matters not”! I love this one’s comic-y design and bold lettering. And though you can’t tell in this picture, it’s a gorgeous, vibrant shade of green that seems to get more colorful every time I step into the sun! Plus, the tee’s super super comfy. I honestly probably wear this one more than any of the others just because it’s so easy and comfortable. Yoda wins the day in all the ways!

This Fifth Sun sublimated Chewbacca is just beautiful you guys. Whoever designed this needs to be showered in wookiee cookies. I don’t have an abundance of brown shirts, so this rich, dark chocolately tone is a great addition to my collection. And on top of that, it’s excellent quality and super-hardy material. But the best thing about it, of course, is seeing Chewie’s smiling face and soulful blue eyes every time I pass a mirror. I’ve never been able to wear it without trying out my Chewbacca impression once or twice 😀 It’s bold and brilliant and I wish I could find more of these lovely sublimated tees again (I could sure use a Wicket one…)

Hot Topic’s BB-8 schematics is just loaded with detail and adorableness. Not to mention being another one of my more relaxed and comfy tees. The white and orange pops off the charcoal background nicely, and knowing a little as to how BB functions makes me feel pretty Star Wars smart. And whenever I pass a mirror, I just can’t help but hug myself because it’s the closest I’ve come so far to hugging the precious ‘mech ❤ Plus, I'll always be able to look back on this as the one I got the year The Force Awakens came out. This shirt’s a classic and it’s no wonder they sold them as long as they did!

Finally, this is my gorgeous First Order Troops shirt from UNIQLO, probably the highest-quality one I own. Normally I’m not big on shirts with just stormtroopers or Vader on them. I know why people like them on shirts, as they’re iconic, terrifying, and utterly cool. But as much as I love these baddies, I find a lot of these designs to be too basic for me, and I oftentimes would rather have Jedi, Rebels, droids, and other heroes front and center (I still long for the day I can find me something perfect with Obi-Wan on it). But this stormtrooper-centered design is anything but basic. This striking painting with echoes of Takodana’s blue sky and sparks of red blasterfire is placed nicely on the shirt’s lower half, with the logo for Episode VII placed above on the lapel. Everything about this is rich, exciting, and dynamic, and takes me back to one of the film’s most thrilling scenes. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what UNIQLO does for The Last Jedi

So with all that being said, if you drew or painted any of these pieces, you are incrediblely awesome, and thank you for taking the time to make such a unique, outstanding piece of clothing. As for the rest of you reading this right now, I hope I awoke some newfound appreciation for your own Star Wars shirts or inspired you to get your first one! After all, a good Star Wars tee is perhaps among the most easy and versatile ways to show the world your SW love, and to find those who share that love 🙂

Fun With The Freemakers Shorts!

OK so you know I wasn’t gonna not talk about the Freemaker Adventures shorts that came out Star Wars Day! They’re absolutely golden little nuggets of wonderful that tie in perfectly with the rest of the series, and also make it harder and harder for me to wait for next season, in a good way 🙂 I’m gonna link them all up here and talk about some of the coolest tidbits, nerdy thoughts, and interesting connections in each one as we go!
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Rogue One, the first season of The Freemaker Adventures, and Rebels episode Double Agent Droid

HOME ONE: The Job Interview

After months spent soaking in the reruns, laying awake at night lost in my headcanons and theories, and occasionally worrying a second season might not even happen, seeing these shorts was like coming home! It’s so cool seeing exactly what conspired immediately after the season finale’s end (not a lot of shows do that, y’know?). I thought it was interesting the Alliance showed interest in recruiting him just on Palpatine’s rage alone. I figured word got around about the Kyber Saber incident on Coruscant, but clearly, if you end up on the Emperor’s “public enemy” list, you’re a friend of the Rebels! But the Freemakers’ job wasn’t signed and sealed until they saw what the kids could bring to the table, that being a lot of guts, ingenuity, creativity, and some serious business skills a la Kordi! Also any and all spare parts, ’cause the poor Rebs could really use ’em. Ah you guys I’m so pumped for what comes next with the series! We’re not only getting to see the Rebel Alliance in a little-explored era, but we’re getting to see what it’s like on an everyday daily basis… with a few Freemaker hijinks along the way 🙂

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– LIEUTENANT VALERIA HAS A U-WING AND I AM BOTH IN AWE AND INSANELY JEALOUS.
– I seriously can’t believe the wookiees and the trandoshans are still going at it tho.
– I may be mistaken, but I love that they finally got Lego jawas to say something besides just “uttini”.

THROWN INTO BATTLE: How To Make Friends And Win Battles

My literal reaction to seeing Chopper was a big feeling-all-gooey-inside “AWWWW!!”. I know we’ll get to see Hera in the coming season, but I had no idea if her grumpy droid would make it this far (with all the Rebels he’s angered and annoyed, it’s a little surprising he hasn’t been “dismantlated” yet). So seeing his rusty orange dome and hearing his grunts was an absolute treat. But this short’s not about Chopper, it’s a Roger adventure! It’s fun seeing the old battle droid’s creative side as well as his sociable side. And boy was that battle a close call! The Star Wars galaxy is just chock-full of beautifully unexpected heroes! 😀

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– I’m still confused as to whether Roger’s number is spelled “Ar-zero-gee-ar” or “Ar-oh-gee-ar”. I think a lot of sources spell it with a zero, so that’s what I do, but Roger referred to it with an “o”. I guess it doesn’t really make that much difference either way, but the last thing I want to do is mispell a character’s name if I can help it.
– Anyone else crack up when Roger utilized the peg on top of an astromech’s head as a cupholder? XD #OnlyInLegoStarWars
– The very fact Chopper went after Roger with blasters in hand honestly made my day. I’d originally theorized Chop and Roger wouldn’t get along well because they were on opposite sides during the Clone Wars, but getting past the initial first impressions, it looks like Chop’s found himself a new buddy to mess with! 😛
– Not gonna lie, I was kinda hoping we might get another droid musical number when R0-GR was floating around at the end… yeah I’m guessing that’s something you can only do maybe once in Star Wars, though…

ROWAN’S SECRET ADVENTURE: Caught Up In The Action

Early on, I’d originally theorized that perhaps the Rebels hired Rowan for more than just as a mechanic, maybe as a lieutenant commander! After all, he’s only twelve and he’s already saved the galaxy as well as possessing some mighty Force powers. But right now at least, he’s on the outside looking in… literally as he’s in the hangar sneaking a peek at a Rebel briefing. Ahh he’s still got that utterly precious curiosity and infectious spirit that makes my insides melt like he’s my own kid! :3 And seeing him to continue to grow his Force-building prowess just makes me so darn proud! Not to mention watching him hold his own pretty awesomely in that Y-wing… second season’s not even begun and I’m already getting feels up here over how grown-up he’s become! This one’s just too much fun you guys.

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– I never thought burnt cookies could do so much damage. Yikes.
– I’ll talk more about her later, but Valeria’s the bomb. When she don’t got time to waste, she blasts whatever’s in her way! Including large awkward chunks of Rebel ships. #Bosslady
– “BEEP BOOP! WE’RE GONNA DIE!! BOOP!” I dunno Roger makes a pretty convincing astromech to me! XD
– Think Galen Erso designed this Imperial base too? His exhaust port self-destruct functions are a trademark of his work!

ZANDER FREEMAKER, SUPERSTAR PILOT GUY: Blaze-Making

I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Zander would go into the Alliance with a burning desire to be a pilot; that’s math even Raam and Baash could understand! But I also knew someone was gonna stand in his way, and I actually theorized early on it might be a bosslady pilot. So, cool! I’m on a roll! When I’d first read the main cast listing for the coming season, I’d thought this Lieutenant Valeria was an Imperial graycoat, but I was pleased as punch to hear Yvette Nicole Brown’s stellar voice acting coming from a Rebel instead. Valeria is all energy, enthusiasm, and an honorable confidence with a touch of sass and I love her already. Also she gets to fly a U-wing and gets an awesome blue flightsuit, which just ups her coolness levels. I’m definitely looking forward to learning more about her in the coming season. In fact, the theories have already begun (Anyone else wondering where she got that scar on her left temple? Also I’m assuming Valeria’s her last name, so I want to know if she’s got a first one). But I had no idea though that Zander was gonna get into a battle this soon, and he really does own it out there! You guys don’t doubt Superstar bro here! Granted I don’t think even Sabine would approve of that much firepower on one spacecraft, and ultimately I’m getting the feeling this incident may keep Zander out of the pilot’s seat for a while, but you gotta love his zest and spunk anyway! 🙂

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– Quick thought: soooo the Rebels hardly have enough spare parts as it is, but… they somehow had enough cannons and guns lying around that they could fix ’em onto the Blazemaker? Hondo must’ve come through for them again. Heh boy’d be interesting if Captain Ohnaka crossed paths with the Freemakers again now… I bet he’d consider them friends if he knew one was a Jedi.
– Love the video game-style shots! That got a big laugh out of me and my bro.
– Anyone else think he shot down a lot a lot of bucketheads though? I get he’s defending his comrades, and I know not all of them died, but it almost seemed a bit of an edgy move for him to make, especially when he went after those TIEs in retreat with the megacannon. If it weren’t for the fact that the Rebels had already lost a couple fighters themselves it might’ve been kinda cruel. This may be war, Zander, but I don’t want you losing that noble part of you that I love. Wow that got probably a little too deep there. This is still Lego, after all… (EDIT: FORGET WHAT I SAID; TFA IS NEVER JUST “LEGO”! I meant it only in that stormtroopers don’t get killed off much in Lego but I realize that sounded like I was saying it wasn’t worth taking seriously. Forgive me for any miscommunication.)
– RIP Blazemaker. I just got around to fully appreciating it and now… yeah I sorta went through a brief period of mourning. Here’s hoping he’ll put together a 3.0 version for the next season!

BEWARE THE GAMMOREAN FLU: Sick Moves

We close out the shorts with a riveting adventure focused on the entire fam and their clever plan to help some old acquaintances. Nice seeing Durpin and Plumestriker again, though I found it interesting Durpin has suddenly gotten himself some motivation. I’m thinking his desire to arrest the Freemakers is more of a personal interest than work-related. We also learn that Durpin is a hypochondriac and I can kinda relate to that XP I love that it looks at first like their plan failed, but it turns out that was the whole point! The Imps didn’t suspect a thing! All the teamworks, all the excitement, all the Lando and all the Chewie! And of course, all the feels as the Freemakers call the Rebellion “home” :3

Assorted Fangirl Musings:
– It’s embarrassing for me to admit, but I realized watching this that I’ve been pronouncing “gammorean” wrong all these years. I’ve put more emphasis on the “mor” instead of the “rean”. Oh well you live and learn.
– This did get me thinking a lot though on SW diseases and this concept of illnesses only certain species can contract. I mean, I guess it’s not that weird, it’s just easy for me to forget that, just because certain humanoids may have similar forms, doesn’t mean that they’re all the same on the inside. It’s reasonable that gammorean immune systems and human immune systems can handle different things differently. I’d like to see some canon perspective on this though because science. Fascinating.
– “Well… here we are… watching a cell door…” “Yep…” Stormtroopers say the best things sometimes XD
– Also remind me to never get on Roger’s bad side when he’s wielding one of his own legs. K.O.’D! Anyone wonder though if he’ll have a new leg this season? Wouldn’t surprise me somehow… everyone else is getting a new look, so why leave the droid out of it? 🙂

So this was a blast to write and I look forward to writing more deep nerdy thoughts in the weeks to come as we anticipate some new Freemaker Adventures, as well as everything else exciting coming next in the Star Wars galaxy!

Rebel Transmissions: Double Agent Droid

Ah you guys this one’s gonna be funnnnn! I adored Double Agent Droid to pieces and can’t wait to share all that I found fascinating and fabulous and just plain funny! I’m sorry these posts are still late right now. Real life has a habit of getting in the way of my getting these out in a timely manner, but hopefully this’ll still be worth your read even a week and a day later.
NOTE: Contains spoilers from Rebels episode Double Agent Droid

Again, I am convinced that Ezra and Zeb are having too much fun messing with the “newbie” Wedge Antilles. Their devilish laugh and fistbump says it all. Though they likely weren’t responsible for sticking the newbie with Chopper and AP-5, you can tell they get a kick out of it just knowing what awaits him X) The fact they get a kick out of it only makes me get a kick out of it even more, buuuut yeah I still do feel kinda sorry for Wedge… AP and Chop are in a particularly snippy mood today. I mean, wow, is it just me or is AP-5 more of a control freak than usual? And they proceed to argue like children the whole way there! What’s got their gears grinding? (Literally!) They’re worse than C-3PO and R2 on a bad day! It’s a bad time for Wedge to be in a small Imperial shuttle and a “long way to Alderaan”. But again, it sure made me laugh my head off XD Yeah expect that little emoji a lot in this one. Like a lot. It’s basically going to be punctuation because as I said before, this episode brought me massive amounts of joy.
Though AP-5 didn’t give Wedge any credit whatsoever, the droids didn’t have any real problem getting in. Also though AP’s being all kinds of cantankerous today, I have to admit I completely relate to his sharp retort “I’M AWARE OF THE PROTOCOL.” #DroidBurn I hate people telling me how to do things when I didn’t ask them to help me and I clearly know what I’m doing, so I think I might be using this one a lot irl. “You missed a spot.” “I’M AWARE OF THE PROTOCOL.” I mean, most of his squabbles with Chop have been over his counterpart questioning his abilities, and he ain’t takin’ any of that! AP knows who he is and he has complete confidence in himself and his skills. AP-5 is actually an inspiration. A grumpy inspiration, but an inspiration nonetheless. We could all stand to be a little more confident, right? Unfortunately, AP-5’s confidence may not go as far as he’d like. Because what the droids didn’t notice was that Chopper happened to catch the eyes and ears of an Imperial listening ship, home of all the Empire’s best personality-drained-for-the-sake-of-productivity computer nerd spies! And their leader (who for the sake of this post I will call Nerd Boss (not meant in a mean way whatsoever because we’re all nerds here)) has a smart, devious plan in mind. Also I absolutely must talk for a bit about the fact that Nerd Boss is sporting spectacles! I’ve been wondering for the longest time whether people in SW ever wear eyeglasses, and now my wonderings have been confirmed! I mean, in a galaxy where you have the advanced medical technology to make cybernetic eyes, would glasses even be necessary? For all I knew laser eye surgery could’ve been as commonplace as contact lenses! But turns out they are indeed a thing, and by far Nerd Boss wears some of the coolest nerdy lenses I’ve ever seen. Honestly you guys I love Nerd Boss. Aside from the fact he’s played to perfection by the great Josh Gad, he’s just an all-around interesting guy. He’s incredibly smart and very very crafty and though he wears the Imp headgear, he doesn’t seem entirely devoid of emotion either; he seems to really enjoy formulating his (mostly sorta not really) genius little plan. Also Chopper chasing the mouse droid utterly cracked me up. The life of a mouse droid is hard, bro! They’re always underfoot amongst all the Imperials and considerably larger droids. Hmmm that should totally be a short film or something. Anyway, so while AP decides the only way to do a job right is to do it himself, he might’ve missed what happened to his cranky teammate, who’s now under Nerd Boss’s complete control… OH NO.
You’d think AP would’ve figured it out sooner somehow, but again, he might’ve been too busy singin’ his own praises to consider it. His puffed-up pride is really fun to watch though. After years spent knee-deep in disrespect, he’s finally working for people who appreciate his real talents… and in the process gained himself quite an ego, it seems. There’re no restraining bolts on him anymore and he’s free to speak the truth, whether you want to hear it or not! And he says it all so perfectly in his brilliantly snobby voice. Pff I’m probably giving AP too much credit right now, but this is the first time in a long while I’ve been able to just talk and talk about this awesome droid. Perhaps though it’s all of his pride that kept him from seeing that there was someone else behind Chop’s dome. Apologizing? Helping out just because? Being polite? Bringing you a refreshing beverage?! That’s not Chopper. Chopper can be nice, but he’s only nice one his terms, and usually it’s hidden in some form of grunty sarc or a smack to the leg. Though AP didn’t recognize it immediately, he does start to suspect something’s up not long after their shuttle headed back home, especially when Chop starts talkin’ Imperial codes. Nerd Boss, you’re a great criminal mastermind but your droid-acting skills? They could use some work. But hey only Chopper can really be Chopper. He’s one of a kind! Wedge doesn’t really think too much on the mech’s improved ‘tude, but the longer Chop goes on with all this niceness, the more suspish AP gets. When Wedge turns over the controls to Chopper, I can’t help but imagine a rather cartoonishly fiendish look on his dome. I’m pretty sure AP-5 saw it too, and wasn’t about to miss an opportunity to let their pilot know about it. Even if their pilot is in the refresher atm. Yeahhhhh it took me a few minutes before it occurred to me what exactly the “refresher” is. I’m glad I know the name for it now, but I think I’m good with not knowing anything further on the subject. *Cough* Dude if I were you I would’ve made a point to go before I left. It doesn’t look too comfortable in there. Also zippers exist in SW? I didn’t know that either. They sure hide ’em well. Oooohmg this is so awkward. But still kinda hilarious. I say again, poor newbie Wedge! But yeah you think droids with bad timing are a problem… just wait ’til Nerd Boss gets to work…
So all went well it seems, for once the Ghost crew’s had a good day! It made me grin seeing Ezra and Zeb and Wedge pallin’ around, even if they’re being total boys with their refresher humor 😛 Still no one listens to AP-5’s concerns about Chopper, least not until Hera voices her own concerns, then and only then does everybody listen! If AP had the dexterity I betcha he would’ve facepalmed. And by the time they realize something’s wrong, Nerd Boss Chop has the rest of the crew trapped and a data spike stealing some base locations. And then he opens the cargo bay door on them. Yeah this is no short circuit or loose wire they’re dealing with. AP-5’s been going on and on about his greatness all day, well now he’s gonna have to go and prove it and take a walk out on the Ghost to save them all! Such a delightful turn of events. But bro better watch out ’cause Nerd Boss Chop’s got blasters! I know he’s not himself right now but the image of Chopper wielding blasters is just too awesome. Chopper and AP throw down and Chop wins, only to roll right back on in to the warm welcome of Zeb’s borifle. Zeb looked like he realllllly enjoyed doin’ that though XD Now Hera’s ready to send a little something special back Nerd Boss’s way… Ezra’s quiet “uh-oh Hera’s mad” says it all. A few jillion jolts of feed just got thrown back in their face. Goodbye, Imperial listening ship! Don’t mess with Captain Bosslady and her crew! I was genuinely tearing up when it seemed uncertain if Chopper would ever be Chopper again… Hera giving him that hug…! It’s too precious! But you can’t get rid of this fiesty C1-10P that easily. The family’s all together again :3 Wellll… except maybe for AP-5. He’s still aimlessly floating around space. But he’s actually doing all right… better than all right perhaps. As he takes in the beautiful starlit solitude and the space butterflies, he can’t fight the song in his heart! You guys I absolutely DIED. I laughed. so. hard. I couldn’t breathe. I can’t remember the last time I laughed this hard at anything, and I laugh a lot. It was the most beautiful, delightful, unexpected, hilarious moment! It literally made my day. And every time it comes to mind I have trouble not laughing out loud. It might not be the norm to hear singin’ in SW, but a galaxy without song would be a sad one. And somehow they did it in a way that doesn’t feel weird. It’s just the right amount of unexpected hilarity! Since then I’ve imagined him singing quite a few other songs. Mostly Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World. I’m so glad this uptight protocol finally found his happy place! And then just as soon as it began, it ended with a resounding “clang” as the Ghost scooped him back to reality. And then Chopper gave a genuine apology… followed up by a good roughhousing. AP-5 might not seem too happy, but I betcha he’d get a little lonely in the stars without his Rebel friends. Plus, now AP and Wedge can bond over chasing Chopper! Hard to get a better ending than that! 😀
Yep that was delightful to write on. Star Wars just makes me smile. So, so much. I’ll send another Transmission your way next week!
